Brisbane set to emulate Ange's infamous 3-4-3 system

By News / Wire

Brisbane’s Brett Holman says the controversial back-three defensive structure used by the Socceroos could be successfully employed at the A-League club this season.

The Roar have reverted to the structure at times already this preseason and it could be coach John Aloisi’s first option in Wednesday’s FFA Cup clash with Melbourne Victory at Brisbane’s Perry Park.

Under Ange Postecoglou, the national side has switched to a 3-4-3 formation in its quest for World Cup qualification, bringing mixed results and much debate.

Holman said it could work at the Roar, even if the concept was still a relatively unfamiliar one.

“It’s new to everyone and I think the majority of playing are brought up with four at the back, but we’re working hard on both formations,” the attacking midfielder said.

“I think we will use it a fair bit and maybe it will suit us. If you look at our centre backs and the quality we have, it could definitely help them.”

The system would allow the likes of Luke DeVere, Jade North and Greek international Avraam Papadopoulos to form the last line.

However that combination is unlikely on Wednesday, given Papadopoulos trained separately from the main group this week and it’s doubtful he will fit to play.

Aloisi is reluctant to put a label on the Roar’s structure, but said a three-man defensive line was “an option” this season.

“Our players are pretty switched on now; we’ve got players who can easily do that,” he said.

“It depends on the opposition and the way they set up as well.”

The Victory provide an unusually stern test at this stage of the year, but ahead of his first FFA Cup campaign Holman insists the squad is match fit.

“The main goal was to be ready for Wednesday, not to build up for the beginning of the A-League season.”

Brisbane’s Italian import Massimo Maccarone will play, the striker receiving a last-minute visa clearance.

The Roar and Victory are two of the seven A-League clubs left in the competition, following the eliminations of Perth Glory, Central Coast Mariners and Wellington Phoenix in the Round of 32.

A win would see the Roar join fellow Queensland sides Gold Coast City and Moreton Bay in the Round of 16.

Adelaide United host Newcastle Jets, Hume City play Bentleigh Greens and Sydney United meet FNQ Heat in the other Wednesday FFA Cup action.

They lost 4-0 to West Sydney Wanderers after losing 5-1 to Victory. Given the bad defending performances in the last 2 seasons, how can John Aloise have the idea of changing to a 3 defenders line up? Remember, in his 1st season with the Roars, some fans wanted to have a separate defending coach?

So, all those formations with 3 at the back are WM? There are 3-5-2, 3-4-1-2, 3-6-1, 3-3-1-3 and 3-3-3-1. And socceroos played 3-2-4-1 once. WM is 3-2-2-3. Why all formations with 3 at the back are WM?

Well Japan got knocked out so we had a pretty good chance to win at home. Big Ange has coached different OZ teams over for a total of about 15 years and after numerous disaster he had to get lucky one day. His only overseas job ended quickly in a disaster. His best stat is that when he coached the Roar and if Broich did not play Roar did not win, so it was all down to Broich and Berisha, Ange just made sure the jerseys were at the game and the players had drinks at half time..

Cool N Cold - What is it you find so attractive about fitting a series of numbers to a football team's playing system. WM was a description first used in the late 1930's simply because the game had moved away from the until then standard 1-2-3-5. this change is widely accepted to have been the brainchild of Herbert Chapman, manager of Arsenal. With training methods, financial rewards, and equipment constantly improving it was only a matter of time before coaches recognised most of the play takes place in the middle third of the field and so began "the numbers game" It may surprise you somewhat but the first recorded example of this type of player "positional interchange" was in 1945 when a team from Russia ,Moscow Dynamos, visited Britain and the ever knowledgable press cold not pick out who was playing where. Hope you watched the Arsenal v Leicester game at the weekend for if you did you can now add Arsene Wenger to the list of managers who are finding the "back three" system difficult to get across to his charges. Wenger changed the system just after half time to a more fluid 4-3-3 and his team won in the dying minutes. Will be interesting to see if he tries the system again. Cheers jb

When you have McKay in the midfield you are playing with 10 men so the numbers do not add up.

and then Zero results. Ange owes Broich and Berisha a lot of money because the rest of his career has been a-grade ordinary.

Conte's 3 4 3 in Chelsea is not W M. Read this, http://spielverlagerung.com/2016/12/25/antonio-contes-3-4-3/ W M is 3 2 2 3 What exactly is Brisbane Roar's 3 4 3?

Grobellar - Forget the numbers game it is all a big con job. The back 3 came about when Herbert Chapman moved his cenrtre half back between the usual ,for the time, hard tackling ,physical type fullbacks who very seldom moved over the halfway line preferring to move the ball rather than "bust a gut" running up and down the pitch. All this was in 1926.! Come 1953 and Chapman's system , of 3-4-3, (or WM) still being used in England, was put to the teat by one of football's great teams,Hungary. the result, a 6-3 drubbing for the home team causing huge ructions around the football world. What was the essential difference in both the teams.Hungary played with 4 forwards but the two wingers were expected to do what today's wing backs do. They also incorporated a pre- war idea out of Austria, with what became known as a deep lying centre forward. Whilst using a centre back as a sweeper what emerged out of this game was the amount of player movement all around the field, something the Russians had been toying with since post war football began again. This Hungarian team play was an amassing of all these ideas. The press in England had seen, watched, but, as usual ,refused to believe their eyes, but some weeks later ,when England played a return match in Budapest the 7-1 victory to the Magyars saw the truth finally recognised, the world game had moved on from 1926 and the then recognised World Champions reduced to punching bags. And so began the numbers game beloved of everyone today, trying to put a pattern to a system of play thought up by a coach no doubt hoping his ideas would bear fruit. Cheers jb

Waz - Yes,I am using hindsight, but my last sentence took on another slant last night with Roar finally getting on the score sheet with a consolation. The problem of previous years has not yet gone away Add to that the defensive performances of certain individuals and the die was cast. Another interesting thought. Victory have signed Milligan and Williams ,both high in Socceroo rankings to replace the departing Baro, and of course tried and tested Barbarousas to replace the departing wingers Rojas and Khallfallah. Roar have signed the ageing Maccarone,Oxborrow,Ingham,Camiero and Pepper o replace Mclaren Borello Oar and Petratos. Doesn't that tell you something about how Roar look upon themselves in the HAL scheme of things?. Three of those signings mentioned have had extensive experience elsewhere in the HAL and have obviously been found wanting so what does that say about Roar's ambitions? TV coverage of the game was not good but in the replays of the goals another pre-existing problem was again showing, ,the susceptibility to fast attacking wingers on both flanks. This too has been evident for a few years now and yet nothing appears to have been done to put pressure on those wide areas of defence. My views on "attitude". If a player takes the field with a "just another game" attitude he wouldn't be long on the field and,if he chose to maintain that "attitude" he would be off the roster. Personally I don't think there are many players with that attitude so one has to look elsewhere when analysing poor performance. Cheers jb.

Agreed. It's not like we won the title last year, or the year before that, or the year before that, with Broich and there's always hope ?

343 doesn't accurately describe what Ange was experimenting with in the Confederations Cup and earlier games. It would better be described as a 3-2-4-1.

Brett says here the "new" system is workable at Roar obviously because there are 3 experienced centre-backs on the books What's.' new" about playing with a back 3??? For years football formations were stuck in what was known as the WM systems ,which in fact is playing with 3 at the back ,four in midfield, and 3 up front The system is widely put down to Arsenal's manager on the 1920.s Herbert Chapman. So the only thing "new" about it is the fact that many of today.s top players would never have seen WM being used as the coaching revolution and evolution started after world War 2. Personnally I think JA's biggest problem this season will still be how to convert his team's possession into goals scored, and here's hoping the new man will prove to be another Berisha. Cheers jb.

and the other comment worth mentioning (which I hope I'm not tempting fate) is what the articles are all on - football; and not off-field dramas ?

Probably because we have a game tonight in the FFA cup against Victory, we have new players and we are trialing a new formation and people are starting to get excited. It's a good thing! : - )
