Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins: The brothers that went to war

By Sam Brown / Roar Guru

Pro Wrestling, the greatest soap opera in sport, is unique in its ability to tell long-term stories over the course of years. At Summer Slam this year a story that has been running since the beginning of 2013 will reach a climax.

It is the story of Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins: the brothers that went to war.

Act 1 – The Rise
It took three men to break through and bring the WWE to its knees.

Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose, the three wrestlers who made up The Shield.

Reigns, the heavy hitting brawn of the team, Ambrose the wild but dedicated heart and Rollins the calculating architect of the group, the brain behind them.

In 2013 the three men combined together and rose through the company ranks disposing of not only the top wrestlers of the current era: John Cena, CM Punk and Daniel Bryan to name a few, but also legends from previous generations: The New Age Outlaws, Evolution and Even The Undertaker.

In the ring they were unstoppable and by mid 2014 they stood together at the top of the WWE as brothers, brought together in battle, who now had the crowd at their mercy and the competition at their feet.

Act 2 – The Betrayal
A chair-shot to the back spelled the end of the greatest group the modern WWE has known.

With one swift move Seth Rollins destroyed the group he created, taking a chair to Reigns and Ambrose, selling out his brothers to join Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, the power couple that control the WWE locker room.

Rollins, the man who assembled The Shield to take him to the top was done with his brothers. Where else did they have left to go when they had beaten everyone else? Now he was just sharing the success that he wanted for himself and himself alone.

While Reigns, the silent muscle of the group swiftly moved on, Ambrose, the heart, could never let the betrayal of a brother slide.

All through the second half of 2014 and most of 2015 Ambrose chased Rollins, trying but failing to thwart him as The Architect rose up the WWE ladder, winning and holding the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Time after time Ambrose faced Rollins and despite his passion and desire, in his rush to dish out justice, the heart of the Shield was always outsmarted and outmaneuvered by the architect.

When Rollins run was finally halted by a knee injury in late 2015 Ambrose was still empty handed, having doled out his share of beatings but never getting the chance to take a lasting victory over Rollins and truly show him the error of his ways.

Act 3 – The Revenge
Dean Ambrose did eventually get to turn the tables though.

In the summer of 2016, Ambrose cashed in a contract for a World Title match straight after the returning Rollins had won the WWE Championship off their former stablemate Roman Reigns.

In an act of ultimate karma Ambrose blindsided Rollins, striking him from behind before he even had the chance to grasp the WWE title.

Ambrose then held on to the championship, winning in a match against both Reigns and Rollins and in the process he denied Rollins the success and status the Architect so craved, the success and status Rollins had given up everything to attain.

Act 4 – The Redemption
Beaten and stripped of all titles Rollins was discarded by his mentor Triple H as a tool past its used by date.

Cast down from his throne Rollins would have to rediscover himself.

At this time, while facing new opponents, he re-formed an old alliance fighting beside former stable-mate Roman Reigns.

A mercenary at heart, Reigns never took Rollins betrayal personally, he understood the decision his teammate had made and never obsessed over it as Ambrose did.

However, fighting beside Reigns gave Rollins a chance to reassess his path; Reigns had fought his way to the top without the leg-ups Rollins had received from Triple H and had ended up equally as successful.

It was as if a fog was lifting from the Architect’s vision.

Finally, when Rollins was targeted by his former mentor Triple H, Rollins was able to fully cast off his former self and embrace a new attitude – No King, No Gods, Only Men, burning down the Triple H’s kingdom with victory over the King of Kings at Wrestlemania.

But there is one final thing left to do before Rollins is completely rehabilitated and his renewal is complete: closure with Ambrose.

Since being betrayed by Rollins, Ambrose has not trusted anyone except himself and Rollins’ initial attempts at reconciliation have been met with skepticism.

A natural loner, Ambrose was always the most invested member of the Shield in the “us v the world” swagger the group projected.

This meant at the time he was the most affected by the betrayal of Rollins, but also that the bond of brotherhood ran deepest and strongest for him even after the group’s split.

A bond that was stretched but not yet broken.

After weeks of Dean trying to ignore and push Seth Rollins away and even after a violent face to face confrontation, on the final WWE Raw before Monday’s big event the two brothers stared each other in the eye and put their fists together in a sign of solidarity.

They have now been joined back together as a team to face the Raw Tag Team Champions at Summerslam.

If the two can unite cohesively they may well rise to the top of the company again and reforge their brotherhood but with the history they share this volatile situation could explode at any moment.

Rollins’ quest for success and status have seen him discard his brother before and Ambrose does not share those ambitions as Rollins does, he fights because he loves the rush and the camaraderie that goes with it.

Should Rollins’ pursuit of these titles push Ambrose into a situation he doesn’t like, don’t expect Ambrose to take things lying down.

Rollins also needs to watch his back, the scars of his betrayal run deep and even though he has turned over a new leaf his brother may just be waiting for a chance to get back at him.

Will they be able to unite together? Will Dean Ambrose this time turn his back on Seth Rollins? What role, if any, will Roman Reigns play?

Summer Slam this Monday will be the time to find out.

And that is the beauty of wrestling, the story keeps going, this weekend they will fight together but somewhere down the line something will happen good or bad and this tale will go on.

Somewhere down the line there will be an Act 5.

Ambrose, please forgive and forget what happened some years ago. I love the Shield and will love to see them together all the time. I love the Shield. They are the best as far as team work at WWE is concerned. Dean, forgive Seth, we all saw what Seth did to you and Roman Reign by stabbing you guys in the back. But please, for the sake of we, your fans in Ghana and all over the world, forgive him and make the shield stronger especially, now the your brother Roman Reign is sick and won't be around, please reconcile with Seth and keep the Shield going higher and higher till Roman Reign comes back to join you. Please don't do anything to destroy the shield. I love you all.

Yeah, I've been knocking around the site for a while now, originally started writing about MMA here and changed to cycling a couple of years ago. I put Lesnar in my list for his first run in 2014 to WM 2015. The second one in particular is pure dominance and was unique at the time in being a champ who doesn't defend at every PPV and really gave the belt a 'big fight feel'. Kurt is great, I'd say the best wrestler of the 00's if you include his TNA work and is really up there with Lesnar for this and would have made the list for sure if it wasn't for Lesnar's more recent run. Completely forgot about Bob Backland, perhaps he should be on the list instead of those guys. I'll keep an eye out for your stuff if you post it.

Oh i did write a slap together column that was just for you mate. If you purely talking wwe champs there is no way you can have Lesnar, we both forgot about Kurt Angle ( shame on us) and dont forget Bob Buckland had the title for five years so that would have to count for something. I read your profile quite impressive. 57 articles for 58000 reads not bad. If you can bring your cycling love audience combined with my league, boxing and afl loving audience we could have a crowd to please. Would be very intersting to see if an audience can happen.

Sir, I think you just wrote a column in the comments. For me it would be very different, thinking specifically about the WWE championship and taking away outside things unfortunately I'd have to remove Taker. I'll write a column about best wrestler down the line but purely for WWE champ it would be: 10 - Brock Lesnar 9 - Shawn Michaels 8 - CM Punk 7 - Bret Hart 6 - Triple H 5 - The Rock 4 - Bruno Samartino 3 - John Cena 2 - Stone Cold 1 - Jinder Mahal Hulk Hogan As I said this wouldn't be best wrestler necersarily but who are the best WWE Champs. From your response I would love to see you write some columns. Lots of other mainstream sports sites are jumping on the boat so I think The Roar is keen to get a bit of coverage happening and see if we can build up a small audience.

The answer is Flair 92...But as much for The Brain's commentary, than for Flair's performance. Bobbie progressively loses his mind over the course of an hour...its incredible.

Hogan always was and always will be!!. Here is a list just for you brother!!! Here is my top ten wrestlers and why. 10. Andre the Giant. Undefeated for fifteen years Andre was the first man ever inducted into the hall of fame in 1993. Andre was a gentle giant that wowed audiences for over twenty years and because of his 7"4 584 pound status he was a spectacular sight just to see. He willing lost to Hogan even though Vince wanted him to win but Andre was never interested in being champion. Despite this he did win the title for about tem minutes before handing it over to the Million Dollar man Ted Diasbe in 1988. 9. John Cena The Hogan of his generation Cena single handedly lead the WWE into a new generation taking the touch from Austin. For a decade he was the face of the company with breaking out into movies and giving some of the best title matches since the attitude era. A good clean cut image that all wwe fans should aspire to be. 8. Brett the Hit man hart The best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be. After the departure of Hulk Hogan in 1993 Brett was flung into the spotlight as the new top guy. A tactical mastermind Brett was reliable always and put on some of the best matches still seen today. He ability to put guys over whether as a heel or face was never more apparent then his WM 13 double place switch with Austin Match is still one of the best WM matches in history. He is the second man to win the Wwf title five times. 7. Triple H A entertaining hard worker his 13 regins as champ saids that he is worth his weight in gold. The original member of Dx his first title reign in 1999 changed the company forever as it would lead to him being the hier to the McMahon throne. Macho man Randy Savage One of my favorites, savage was as big of star as Hulk hogan and the only man to beat him at WM for the title. Savage always kept up with Hogan and kept that golden age running longer than many thought it would go. His WM 3 match with Rivky Steamboat is the best IC match of all time and he was just the best in ring performer of his time. The Rock Words just cant describe this guy, a Hulk Hogan 2.0 a Schwarzenegger 2.0 he has been compared to the best of them. While his moves in the ring were laughable he was able to take a body slam and an elbow that would not hurt a child an turn them.into the biggest moves in wrestling history. When Austin was injured he took the reigns and kept the business alive a well and even won Hulk hogan his fsns back at WM 18. Stone Cold Steve Austin Austin was just a nutcase. A wondeful technical wrestler turned brawler his fued with McMahon save the company and changed the business forever into its most profitable petiod ever. The anti hero was the perfect guy to change the face of wrestling from the golden age to the Attitude era. With the best finish move ever he start his matches with the best entrance ever and finish it with the best move ever Stone cold kept it simple on his road to success. The Undertaker The most loyal employee ever to the WWE, he started in 1990 and he never left since. His WM streak.of 21-0 will never be matched and his quality of matches are unperil. He has beaten all comers and will.be forever remembered as thd best workimg big man ever. Shawn Micheals The best in ring performer has had too many great matches to list here, his WM X ladder match with Razor Ramon is still the one of the best of alltime second to only his WM 25 match with thd Undertaker. A fierce competeor his fueds with Brett Hart and the Undertaker are still the best of all time and he was the man to.put over Austin to engite the Austin era flame. His 95 Royal rumble match win is the best of all time IMO. Hulk Hogan. Hogan is the Elvis of the wrestling industry. The biggest name in the game, the one that all try to be. He was the biggest face of all time then he was thd bigggest heel of all time. The Nwo will forever go down as the brain child of Eric Bishoff but Hogan was the man to make it work. Headling up.more WM then anybody and having the third longest regin in history Hogan will always be the best. Well there you have it Sam. My top ten, what do you think??
