Cats conquer Collingwood to keep top two hopes alive

By Dylan Carmody / Roar Guru

Geelong have held off a valiant Collingwood outfit at the MCG this afternoon, defeating the Magpies by 11 points.

It was a tough start for the Cats, who conceded six goals going into the quarter time break, as their defence was opened up, and were unable to stem the tide of Collingwood entries.

Whatever Chris Scott said to his men during the break must have worked, as the Cats came racing out of the blocks to have a four goal to one term, their defenders creating a wall that Collingwood simply could not break open, and went into the half only trailing by four points.

The third quarter was tough for both sides, as goals were sparse, and both Geelong and Collingwood fought tooth and nail, throwing themselves at the footy.

The Collingwood defence, much like Geelong’s in the second, held strong, and two late goals to the Pies saw go into the last break with another four point lead.

The last quarter was fierce, but in the end, Geelong proved too strong for Collingwood, who were unable to find a goal as the Cats midfield eventually began to find their feet, and ran over the Pies to win by 11 points.

The best for Geelong were Patrick Dangerfield, with 32 touches, as well as two goals, as well as Sam Menegola (28 disposals, 2 goals) and Mitch Duncan (32 disposals).

For Collingwood, they were led by Taylor Adams with 26 possessions, as well as Mason Cox and Tim Broomhead with two goals each.

It was a big win for Geelong, whose workmanlike performance saw them once more push for a spot in the top two, and book themselves a home qualifying final.

They will face GWS at home in what promises to be a massive matchup.

For Collingwood, it was another tough loss, and Nathan Buckley will have one more match to impress the Collingwood board before the end of Collingwood’s season.

That will come against a Melbourne side that are desperate to make finals for the first time since 2006.

Agree wholeheartedly, Chris. Keep punching! Look forward to the day both our clubs are heavyweights again and 'punch on' in a meaningful, competitive rivalry.

Geelong will win the big one this year because they haven't peaked. I think they are timing their run perfectly. If you're in the top four anything can happen. Mark my words...Any of the top four can be beaten and that means that it's anyone's flag. Moreover, I don't think the Swans will be able to continue their run into September for the four weeks of the campaign. They are playing their finals campaign at the moment. They should be out of the finals race in the first week.

Tiger...this tribal thing is missing. Roy Keane once said that Man United fans had become cocktail sandwich supporters and lost their voice. Well, we have degenerated even further...We are nothing more than Subway sandwich supporters. We have no class, no passion, no objectivity and blind commercial immersion. Mind you. I would never buy a Subway sandwich. Hence, the endemic dictatorial regime that is Mr McGuire and Associates needs to be torn down to its foundations. I would rather play at Vic Park and win games of football than go to the G and see my team humiliated by rubbish like Geelong, Melbourne, Sydney etc etc. Teams that we traditionally put to the sword. Just look at our win-loss ratios over the years. It's time for as Revolution. Eddie, Buckley and the clan are superfluous to our requirements. We need a Daicos, Piclken, Barham etc. No more apathetic leadership CLIQUES!!!!AND THE FOE ARE FOE...CARLTON RICHMOND ESSENDON MELBOURNE ARE MUST WIN AFFAIRS...NOT HAVING FIRE IN YOUR BELLY FOR THESE ENCOUNTERS MEANS YOU'RE NOT FIT TO DON A BLACK AND WHITE GUERNSEY. END OF STORY!!!

As a cat supporter i agree with you. They didn't look like a side who are currently 2nd on the ladder. They struggled to put away a depleted side who are down the lower end of the ladder. Bring that form into the finals and they won't get close.

I cant understand how they are signing up, I barrack for Collingwood ... I can think of a hundred things I would rather do than go to the football to see a Buckley managed team, with no game plan and a mediocre list, loose more games, year after year. Some people need to get a life!

Ok i apologise for that. Now can you please read my question to you and answer me about Buckley's smug look when answering questions about Lumumba? We saw last night exactly what Lumumba was talking about when Buckley was basically laughing about it.

My point is that not ALL members are happy with Nathan and ED so the numbers don't necessarily indicate what Peter claims . Good on 'em for signing up though. Read the comments here from Pies supporters, they don't all love those two yet still love the Pies.

If you followed Geelong more closely you'd notice they're not exactly full strength either. Four forwards out, Hawkins, Cockatoo, McCarthy and Gregson, and three are best 22. Selwood, Blicavs out, and the usual back-ups in Horlin-Smith, Cowan and Stanley. Geelong haven't had 6 AFL debuts this year for no reason. Cats have been forced to play their third/fourth tier.

Don't know how you can argue that True Tiger Fan when they lead the membership table? Maybe next year if there is a drop.

Kane, reread my comment. I said those players are in our best team, 6 players = 1/3rd of 18. Not our best third but still one third not on the park. Please read more carefully in future.

Make no mistake . . . I hate Collingwood! Not in a literal sense but in a parochial us v them football sense. And let's face it, Pies supporters love it that way. All part of the tribal warfare, so to speak. As an ousider it's obvious all is not well within the ranks. Record memberships, state of the art training facilities, etc. etc. etc. are not enough to appease the masses and shouldn't be. This is a results driven industry. I sense a revolution building. Dictatorships historically can get things moving, like Ed did in his early days . . . good job Ed. Eventually they pass their use by dates because they are self-serving, insidious organisations. The only thing better than kicking the Pies when they're down is beating them when they are up and about. In their current situation . . . well you know where I'm going! I'm expecting a childish dressing down from the Scribe, but seriously Peter it sounds like the Tribe are stirring.

Myths put to bed: 5. Geelong can’t win if Selwood is kept quiet (think that theory was put forward by pumping dumbsh%& or rick dishpig, can’t recall which). He didn’t play and we won – again. 2 – 1 – 1 without Selwood if you are keeping track (3 of those 4 games against top 8 sides) 6. Geelong always lose to bottom sides. Not a great game but a win is a win.

If you consider Goldsack and Greenwood to be in your best 3rd of players then you obviously over-rate your list. And please tell me Peter the Scribe what you personally think of Buckley's smirk when giving an answer to a question about Heritier Lumumba's experience with racism in the Collingwood Football Club. Eddie's past history ie. (Adam Goodes King Kong comment) is obviously rubbing off on your mate Buckley. He was almost laughing through his whole comments on Lumumba.

You want positives? Okay, this is too easy. 1. Four points. That's always the real goal of any game isn't it? Job done. 2. Top four locked in. 3. No injuries. List is getting healthier. 4. have our own finals destiny in our own hands. Win next week and it's top two and a home final.

And if Geelong win it you will be telling us in September, we beat them once and went close a second time. Pete, please give up. Your comments are pathetic. I am interested in what Collingwood are doing and couldn't give too hoots about Geelong or Richmond or anyone else for that matter. Attend to your flock first...

Geelong has a few outs too. The coach is too passive...Just accept the fact that he cannot make switches to turn things around. Enough Pete with the Buckley and Eddie talk. Your words don't sway us any longer. We cannot tolerate these asphyxiating levels of propaganda. Besides, imagine if he ever got into a Grand Final and he let things pan out like yesterday and so many other close games this year. We almost got there but....I fear him in finals and yesterday was just another brick in the wall. Much of a muchness all year. We fought hard but lost....However, please note our coach did nothing to try to change things!
