Wallabies DIY player ratings vs All Blacks Bledisloe 1: The results

By The Roar / Editor

The results are in! Yesterday, we asked you to rate the Wallabies side that took to the field against the All Blacks, and now we’ve added up the data from all of our responders to bring your our DIY player ratings from the Test.

As you’d expect, the results were just as devastating as the Test itself was for the Wallabies. Let’s start with the good news first – that won’t take long.

Kurtley Beale was our man of the match, but in this debacle that honour only required an average rating of 5.73.

Adam Coleman was just narrowly behind him with a 5.72, but they were the only two starters for the Wallabies to go above an ‘average’ 5.

Ned Hanigan, former skipper Stephen Moore and Samu Kerevi were the most blindingly bad performers in the side according to the votes, all rating below three on average.

All three copped a worse rating than the worst we have seen from any starter this year, Eto Nabuli’s 3.42 on debut against Scotland.

Check out the full results below, and let us know what you think in the comments.

I would love to see a team selected where everyone was told to do their own job and was selected for the next game based on how well they did that job. I fear I'll never see it

That is accurate imo

Folau was caught out of position a few times too many. He just doesn't read the defensive side at all well and the wings often are forced to cover. This happens more than it should and we need to look at this position honestly

Well, there you go then. A proven RWC winner. He won't put up with any provincial politics. His style of play is still getting the Brumbies into finals.

http://www.planetrugby.com/news/wallabies-defence-coach-defends-his-position/ this is from the guy that introduced the most confusing defensive structure & pattern in the history of Rugby aided by selecting non 'tackling' players, when on defense we move the #13 to #12, move #12 to #15, move #15 to #11, move #11 to #13 and ask the #14 to roam around covering whatever hole is left to be covered leaving his position open for Ioane to waltz through.........Speight has a habit of shooting out for a 'spot tackle' which he regularly misses, Kerevi is too slow & has no idea defending at #13, his body positions, defensive reads & alignments were all over the place (he's a Hooker wearing #13) and Rona controlling traffic jams while doing the Macarena.

Honestly, we could cope with one bloke who needed some covering. But when it's two or three, things come unstuck. And it's not as though Foley is some kind of playmaking savant. He's a plodder. The same goes for the forwards. Hooper is a dynamo but is probably the 4th best 7 in Aus. McMahon has concrete shoulders and can bend the line but he's just too small to play 8 and cover for Hooper. And fark knows what Hanigan is picked for. Players are so busy covering for other players that they come up short on doing their own jobs. Look at the ABs. Who gets carried in that team? Okay, their props are average but no one can do their jobs for them. They just suck it up and take a beating up front, usually achieving parity.

Pirates, Jake White has been desperate for the job for years. He wanted to coach internationally again, and he has had success wherever he has gone. He is strong on fundamentals and getting the best out of his players, even if he doesn't play the world's most attractive brand of rugby.

Or select players who can't play their position. A 6 and 7 who have no presence at the ruck. An 8 who is built like 7. A 10 who can't pass or kick. Or tackle. A 15 who can't or won't kick.

As a Melbournian I've found my views don't always find favour on sites like this. But the scores above and the articles and comments on this site are now strikingly negative. The crowds are small. The newspaper columns and television commentary is despairing. To those who still think that Cheika is doing a great job, have you thought at all that everyone else might be onto something? Have tried to look at the last two years of results and thought maybe there's a problem here? I'm sure you'll respond that there is no candidate to replace Cheika. Don't you find that unusual? There's always a successor or at least the hungry contender. But no one wants to put their hand up to run this. Look what happened to Link. We need a national coach for the national team. We need the best 23 that this nation can produce, kitted up on match day. What happened on Saturday night was not representative of Australian rugby.

The Wallabies scored 28 unanswered points against the ABs. They won the last 30 minutes. Let's stick with Hooper and Hanigan and Foley and Beale. Obviously the cornerstones of our success. But let's mix up the second row and put in Simmons. And perhaps start Phipps. That'll really confuse the Kiwis.

These player ratings are meaningless and unfair. Players like Beale and Folau are habitually poor defenders and systems have to be put in place to cover for them. Other players have to cover for them , confusion reigns and other player's games suffer. We desperately need all players defending in their own positions. If they cannot then they should not be Wallabies. Unfortunately Foley's defence is increasingly suspect and Genia has also become a defensive liability too. We must fix the defence in the backline.

Jim Tucker did some player ratings on fox sports that are a little closer to the mark than what the crowd has come up with here. I think he was probably a point too high on everyone but at least he only judged them on this match, not the super rugby season, who they play for, what their hair looks like etc.

Players out of position

This is exactly what happens when you select players out of position. Why didn't the Wallabies have a trial game to shake the cobwebs and boast morale? Why is half of the Waratahs team even in the 23? Why is Nathan Grey, who is obviously a weak and clueless defensive Monday the Waratahs, now our National defensive coach?

Yep. And let's all watch Hanigan be selected again! He is a Waratah after all. No matter how badly a game Folau has, he will be selected! When will a coach have the guts to drop underperforming players??! It's a wonder players don't care, because they are all safe! If an All Black underperforms he is dropped! A lack of competition. It amazes me how a franchise, the Waratahs, failed all season yet are rewarded with so many players gifted positions! 8 Waratahs selected!!?? Grey had a horrible season as defensive coach yet is rewarded a full time position??! Kiwis are constantly laughing at us! Haha, we deserved to be Red nosed and clowned! We see it, yet they don't? Boycott the rest of the Rugby Championship immediately!

Best game from Scott Sio in two years I thought, somewhat aided by Genia not putting the ball into scrums, but he was much more involved than he has been for a while.

Kepu, TPN, Timani and Simmons all did pretty well. The ABs were on target to score 80 to 100 points but those guys with TK stemmed the tide. Harsh to mark them so low. They matched up fine and did their jobs. I thought Speight did okay in defence. So much was asked of him and he did most of it. If he is allowed to play wing a bit more you'd see that his defence is actually fine. KB added so much in our attack. He and Folau did good there. They need to fix the midfield D though so push KB back to 15 and Folau to wing. Much chaos reigned with Grey trying to hide both Foley and KB and with Kerevi not being a good defender with space around him.

That's why players like Beale and qc have better tackle stats. If you don't try to tackle it is not a missed tackle. Watch Beale just look at players go thru. These players are too worried about stats rather than showing pride and having a go. Poor Kerevi having to try and do Beales job as well. If Cheika keeps Beale at 12 is be surprised and SBW will be laughing

Nonsense. It makes no sense that a player who does well to even get a fingertip to a ball runner gets a cross next to their name, but a player who lets the ball runner run right around him without even making the tackle does not.

They both got 5s and got virtually the same aggregate score. They were both poor in defence and good in attack. Speight made more of an effort in defence at the very least, despite being poor.
