Blues sign Kreuzer, cull five others

By News / Wire

Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer will be a Blue until at least the end of the 2019 AFL season after he signed a new two-year deal on Thursday.

The club also announced veteran key defender Sam Rowe has accepted a new contract to play on next season.

Three years ago, Kreuzer’s career was threatened by persistent injuries, but he has enjoyed an outstanding season, playing 21 games and earning an All-Australian nomination.

“To Matthew’s credit, he has been elite in his preparation and managing his body throughout the year,” Blues football boss Andrew McKay said.

“He is often referred to as a ‘heart and soul’ player for our club and we’re delighted Matthew will be remaining in the navy blue for a further two years.”

Rowe will be hoping to regain full fitness for the start of the season as he continues his recovery from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament suffered in May.

“Sam has been a consistent and durable performer for us since making his debut in 2013 and has been meticulous in his rehabilitation with his knee injury,” McKay said.

“The leadership and experience he has brought to our young backline has been invaluable and we look forward to welcoming him back for the start of the 2018 season.”

The Blues also started their annual list cull with Kristian Jaksch, Liam Sumner and Andrew Gallucci informed their contracts would not be renewed.

Daniel Gorringe and Matthew Korcheck announced their retirements.

Jaksch, initially a No.12 draft pick for Greater Western Sydney, Sumner, drafted 10th overall by the Giants, and Gorringe, selected 10th overall by Gold Coast, were all first-round draft picks who were unable to translate their junior talent to the elite level.

That would be the same Carlton supporters who were saying Gibbs would stay and the blues couldn't afford to let Kreuzer and Casboult go?

Mail from inside Carlton is they believe Kelly is re-signing along with Hopper, who already has done so.

Kelly is still a big chance of leaving GWS. Where to is the question?

Macca, everyone can forget Kelly and Hopper coming in. Hopper has re-signed and it appears Kelly will be dong the same. Kruezer staying, Casboult staying, Gibbs apparently staying also. All these super trade scenarios Carlton supporters have been talking about for months, all appear to be heading right out the window.

Matty, most Carlton supporters acknowledged that 2 years ago the list was very messy and going nowhere. Since SOS and Bokton have come to the club there has been 29 changes. Sure some of the players brought in aren't top line but some of them have been good and some have added depth where needed and some have failed. It was stated that it would take 4 - 5 years before the list could become successful. We have just finished 2 years, so hopefully in another couple of years we will become competitive and challenge for the top eight. That is what I, Macca and other supporters have been saying whilst opposition supporters have enjoyed potting the Blues lack of success, but if they have been watching every Carlton game surely they must see the improvements that I and other Carlton supporters are seeing. Sure, there will be lmpatient Carlton supporters wanting earlier success but I believe they are in the minority.

Col,I'm still the same guy,I just took the Casboult deal on properly, just as I said the Gibbs situation was all about trading him in the Tomlinson,Marchbank,Steele,Stewart trade. I have been proven wrong on both matters but stand by that. Those that understand footy know I could have been right. I may abuse your club, but I try not to do so without abusing individual posters and appreciate you've steered the conversation in a positive direction. That's exactly where the mighty blues should try to head. I've said the rejects were an issue and believe Carlton will now clear that up. Even your most adamant supporters are realising the list is very messy in this regard.

Thanks Col - I listened to the game on the ABC and the Sydney commentary team were atrocious - spent so much time talking amongst themselves, only had any emotion at all when Sydney had the ball, players could "go long" 5 times in a row and still be in the back pocket and they talked incessantly about Tippett and Sinclair's injuries despite them coming back on to the ground and never mentioned Byrne. Great to hear he will be OK. I hope you enjoy the trip and remember to duck and cover.

Byrne had a rolled ankle against Sydney - no surgery required.

Purely pleasure Macca. Five days in Tokyo then a 13 day cruise around Japan. Hopefully there will be no missiles flying over.

Mic - I have searched everywhere for news on Byrne and haven't found a thing. Hopefully it isn't anything major as I think he could be a real player. As for Kelly - has your rumour discussed what we would be giving up? We don't have a second round pick and GWS don't have a first round 1, I am not confident pick 3 would get it done but I wouldn't want the blues giving up this years and next years first rounder for just Kelly.

Nice work Blues Great news with Krooze. Casboult also for the right coin. Wouldn't mind seeing Boekhurst given another go, I didn't mind what I saw in the last month. Big piece of the puzzle will be getting Kelly through the door. Rumour is it's all happening Go Blues Anyone know what happened to Byrnes knee in the last game?

I am liking the new Mattyb on Carlton related matters. We are probably not going to agree on everything but it is much more pleasant to have a good conversation without the discussion turning into a name calling diatribe. Well done Matty. I am currently in Japan and will raise a Japanese beer to hopefully better things for all of us.

"I did say Collingwood or Richmond yes, maybe he didn’t want to play for Collingwood." "As I’m sure we all understand, these issues often involve many working parts" Hmm Ok, you can believe that. "after such a disappointing season." Not sure how when you predict the blues would win the wooden spoon and they don't you can still claim to be disappointed but whatever.

I did say Collingwood or Richmond yes, maybe he didn't want to play for Collingwood. I don't actually mind Casboult. If the money Col mentioned is right it isn't that far away from my story when you think about it,and again I always said Carlton were happy for him to stay. As I'm sure we all understand, these issues often involve many working parts. I've also mentioned McViegh and could once again be completely wrong, just sharing rumours so we will wait and see. I think the Kruezer signing was the most important thing for Carlton this pre season, even topping the Gibbs issue,so that's good news for the Blues after such a disappointing season.

Mattyb - I don't want to start anything and have appreciated the change in tone but mid year you were pretty emphatic that Casboult had gone to Collingwood. I acknowledge that in more recent times we did agree on the strategy the blues had for an offer big enough to get the a quality pick.
