The Wallabies are making Eddie Jones nervous

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

I wish I had a solid connection to Eddie Jones, England’s coach. I don’t, but I have the next best thing – a friend of a friend.

Regarding our clash with England, November 19 at Twickenham, my mate says that Eddie isn’t worried about our forwards partly because we’re lacking a back three and a prop that’s world class. But he does fear our backs.

It’s Eddie’s thinking, so I’m told, that if Will Genia’s in form, and Bernard Foley distributes well, then the best outside combo of Karmichael Hunt, Kurtley Beale, Tevita Kuridrani, Samu Kerevi, Reece Hodge, Israel Folau, Marika Koroibete is a threat that will have to be thwarted.

Hence, Eddie’s revised his statement that he wouldn’t be picking any of the Lions players for the November internationals. As you can see from the squad he’s just announced, he’s going to rely on a defensive midfield and a fast back-row to nullify the Wallaby attack.

Will his plan be successful? Probably. At any rate, with a pack like the one Eddie can put on the field, it’s a sure bet that he’s getting more sleep at night than Michael Cheika is.

England’s 33-man training squad
Forwards Dan Cole (Leicester Tigers), Tom Curry (Sale Sharks), Tom Dunn (Bath), Charlie Ewels (Bath), Ellis Genge (Leicester Tigers), Jamie George (Saracens), Dylan Hartley (Northampton Saints), Nathan Hughes (Wasps), Nick Isiekwe (Saracens), Maro Itoje (Saracens), Joe Launchbury (Wasps), Courtney Lawes (Northampton Saints), Joe Marler (Harlequins), Chris Robshaw (Harlequins), Sam Underhill (Bath), Harry Williams (Exeter Chiefs), Billy Vunipola (Saracens), Mako Vunipola (Saracens)

Backs Mike Brown (Harlequins), Danny Care (Harlequins), Elliot Daly (Wasps), Owen Farrell (Saracens), George Ford (Leicester Tigers), Piers Francis (Northampton Saints), Alex Lozowski (Saracens), Jonny May (Leicester Tigers), Jack Nowell (Exeter Chiefs), Henry Slade (Exeter Chiefs), Marcus Smith (Harlequins), Ben Te’o (Worcester Warriors), Anthony Watson (Bath Rugby), Marland Yarde (Harlequins), Ben Youngs (Leicester Tigers)

"whatever happened to Beaumont??" Sale have moved him to lock. With Strauss signing and Sale lacking depth in the second-row, that prompted the move. Not sure it's his best position though.

THIS IS FROM PLANET RUGBY "Confidence trick “These young players are delicate. They are like flowers; it is how much water, how much sunshine. If you give them too much too early they grow up too quickly and their base foundations aren't strong enough. You have to quietly build them up over a period of time until they are ready.” So spake Eddie Jones after noisily calling up Marcus Smith, 18, to his 33-man England training squad for a camp in Oxford. And this soon after Tom Curry became England's youngest starter in almost a century, with Jones including him in a match-day squad that included 11 uncapped players. Don't get us wrong. We're not doubting the likes of Smith and Curry. The have the talent to bag 200 caps between them, and we readily acknowledge that Jones referred to Smith as merely "an apprentice" who's attending camp to "clean the boots and hold the bags". But Eddie's invitations appear to be getting increasingly more scattergun of late. There's now at least 80 players on his radar. Like all Aussie coaches, he's keen on eking out 'big reactions' and seeing how players bounce back from rejection, and we can only assume it's in this vain that he sends the likes of Kyle Sinckler and Jonathan Joseph away "to work on their game". Most pundits had the pair down as nailed-on starters for the November Tests and the Six Nations; suddenly they're not even cleaning boots or holding bags. To our untrained eye, the only thing Sinckler and Joseph are missing from their game is self-belief, and we can't quite fathom out how that will bloom in the absence of water and sunshine. It seems really harsh. Counter-productive, even. Could Eddie's own history of rejection be a factor in his increasingly ostentatious squad announcements? (Yep, here comes the cod psychology!) It's said that he's never really got over being sacked by the Australian Rugby Union, and you sense he derives pleasure from plucking unknowns from his vast resources whilst his former employers are being forced to lay off entire teams. And there's also something deeper than banter in his remark that Argentina's visit in November represent England's toughest assignment of the year, not least because the Wallabies arrive in town the following day. Still, whatever is gnawing at Eddie's soul is a fillip of England – he's lost just one of his 20 games in charge. But he'd be best advised to swot up on his botany if he wants to extend that sort of form. Australian flowers tend to be a great deal hardier than English roses. For every Jonny Wilkinson, there's around 60 Paul Sampsons. Remember him? Exactly."

cant see either of the coaches losing too much sleep to be honest - form and a quick glance at the team sheets show England comfortable favourites. Australia usually has a better backline than England and yet they've lost 8 of the last 11, Australia has shown some glimpses of improvement since last year but nothing to suggest they'll beat England at Twickenham. Likewise Chek wont be expected to win this one, anything approaching a one score loss should be viewed as a decent result. England and Australia(by necessity) are approaching the next RWC in different ways, England looking to dominate and not lose more than 1 game a year, Australia have a much tougher ask with 3 bled tests so they'll always lose a few more, but if they can beat NZ once or twice before the next RWC they should rightly consider that enough to be competitive. Having said all that I hope its competitive and close, it should be the best game in what is to be honest a poor selection of fixtures

CUW - there isn't really a like-for-like replacement for Billy is the issue. Hughes and Morgan are probably the closest but even then they're slightly different players - both lay a bit wider and further from the ruck than Billy does and make more metres in less confined areas (although Hughes has done his best Billy impression for England in fairness, but I don't think it brings the best out of him). Simmonds' injury looked bad yesterday but the stretcher and brace turned out to be precautionary thankfully, he probably has a stinking headache but he should be good to go in a couple of weeks.

"so basically you guys are saying that if these Aus players went to NZ and spent a few seasons learning that extra 15% it takes to be an AB then they may make the team?" Yup. I also think that had Will Genia been an All Black from the start, Aaron Smith would still be NZs best super sub 9. Just one example. There is nothing wrong with our guys as athletes, it is the NZ system that polishes these players to their brilliant standard.

"The Wallabies are really lacking in a few key positions (4, 6, 8 and 10) but the guys you name are all pretty good." Correct. Unfortunately there is really no end in sight in any of those key positions, save perhaps 4.

I would have to agree with you PK ,those 3 changes alone are a fairly large point of difference .And the Poms just squeaked it in a couple of those games so...

Cheikas gone from seconds away from beating the ABs in NZ to losing to Italy at home in mere weeks. Who knows what Cheika is capable of. I dont. Given that England is certainly not an impossibility.
