Free agent Steven Motlop nominates Power

By News / Wire

Port Adelaide are set to land another big-name AFL recruit, with Geelong goalsneak Steven Motlop nominating them as his new home.

The Power on Friday confirmed they had lodged paperwork with the AFL, having reportedly offered the restricted free agent a four-year deal.

Geelong have three days to decide whether to match the Power’s offer but are considered unlikely to do so.

Port edged out cross-town rivals Adelaide in the race to lure the 26-year-old, who played 135 games for the Cats across eight seasons.

The Power have been active players during the first week of the trade period, signing former Brisbane skipper Tom Rockliff as a free agent, while offloading Jarman Impey to Hawthorn and Jackson Trengove to the Western Bulldogs.

Port have also been linked to Melbourne forward Jack Watts, who is under contract but has been encouraged to consider his options.

I thought he was a pretty clear worst on ground against Richmond in that first final.

Watts wasn't even in Melbournes best 22 but Port has an open spot for him? The guy is a dud. Rockliff is a good pickup. Motlop is unreliable. Watts is useless.

Your Port hatred aside, they are three good pickups, Rockliff, Motlop, Watts. You'd have all three of them in your team, unless your team is Richmond I guess.

Amazing how Port are the "winners" in this trade period for picking up 3 players that there previous clubs didn't want to match offers for.

Impey is a gun, he just needs to work harder to get to contests, maybe Clarkson can get him going, ditto for Motlop, the Power's work with indigenous players is wonderful and maybe that will help him get that consistency.

Motlop had a good final series but he's been ordinary for years. I can't see any Cats fans clamoring to keep him at Kardinia Park

Good luck with Motlop if Impey frustrated you.

Port is starting to look good for next year, good midfielder, tick, outside pace, tick, quality third tall, tick. If I could have named Ports needs, those probably would have been the three. Impey gone is a good thing, you cant run around and get 9 touches in the AFL then spray sitters for goal, it will be interesting to see what Clarkson can do with him, its also probably saved Matt Whites career. Jacko is a loss, but I understand both parties decisions to move on, WB have themselves a good footballer there. Now if we could just offload Lobbe this could be the best trade period ever
