Heavy favourite Winx has added another chapter to her legend with a third victory in the Cox Plate, extending her winning streak to 22 consecutive races.
The champion mare survived a serious challenge from Humidor late in the race to come away with yet another record-breaking victory.
“I am lost for words. She has just made history,” said jockey Hugh Bowman.
“I was born the year that Kingston Town won his first Cox Plate and to think that she has emulated the great… trying to compare one horse to another, they are always different animals at the end of the day, but we are in the presence of greatness.
“She will be recognised as one of the greatest horses to grace the Australian turf and to be a part of her career, I can’t explain how much that means.
“I have had an amazing career and Winx delivered me my first major Group 1 in this exact race three years ago, and she has now delivered me with my only other two.
Winx’s trainer, Chris Waller, gave credit to the field for making it a competitive race.
“It was close, as you would expect in a Cox Plate,” said Waller.
“You never know what is going to happen on a race track and it was great to see her moving forward in that normal style, but gee, Humidor gave us a hell of a fight.
“Fortunately we got the upper hand and yeah, well done to the connections of all runners. They have run second to a very good horse.”

So the quality of racing stopped them from breaking track records did it? I am a big fan of the horses you mentioned and others but facts are facts and we all look back and think things were better back in the day!

Long neck actually but she did seem to be holding Humidor at the finish. Great horse undoubtedly but in an era where there are few quality racehorses of high class. When you look back at Saintly and Octagonal the racing seemed to be at another level Still you can only beat those at the time you are racing. It is good to see her called as one of the legends of Australian racing rather than comparing with horses from another era. Would love to have seen her race over a mile against Sunline.

Fact she broke the track record shows you just how big a run it was from Humidor to put that pressure on her. Having said that she still won by 1/2 a length without Bowman touching her with the whip! GOAT

Winx's run in the Cox Plate reminded me of Phar Lap's victory in the Agua Caliente Handicap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bROtR5ivyZw She was kept wide to keep out of trouble and apart from the extra distance covered the track was probably faster near the rail. On his day, Humidor is a better horse than most people realise. Could this have been her best Cox Plate win?

Hughie does not let them get that close. Winx had very little left. But like BC at Ascot she showed her greatness and was holding Humidor on the line. If Humidor goes straight it could have got very interesting.

woohoo - picked the trifecta. very good run by humidor but don't think Winx needed a single touch of the whip. had him covered to the line comfortably. jockey just knows his horse so well.
