Georges St-Pierre is once again on top of the UFC world, he defeated middleweight champion Michael Bisping with a stunning third-round stoppage with a choke-out to become the new UFC middleweight champion.
In a bloody and brutal battle that left both men worse for wear, St-Pierre got the upper hand in the third by flooring Bisping with a left hook to his jaw. What followed was a barrage of strikes on the ground, but Bisping was able to defend himself against these hits.
With St-Pierre turning on to his back, he was able to apply a choke hold to Bisping, one that he was unable to defend against.
The referee stepped in and stopped the bout.
After his latest victory, St-Pierre has become a two-division champion and joins the likes of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture and UFC golden boy Conor McGregor. He has also kept his undefeated championship fight streak intact, which brings his winning streak to 13 matches.
Proving that a four-year period of inactivity was no barrier, St-Pierre has already cemented his place as the best Welterweight fighter in the UFC, now he has earned his place as one of the best fighters ever.
Though the question remains, now what? Who will he fight next?
UFC President Dana White has already addressed these burning questions, announcing that Australian fighter Robert Whittaker will be St-Pierre’s first match-up to defend his newly-won UFC middleweight title.
St-Pierre’s return to the UFC could not have come at a better time, with Ronda Rousey probably never coming back, at least not to her championship-winning form, and Conor McGregor busy making fantasy fights with boxers, the UFC needed another cash cow. Now it has one.
The remaining championship matches did not disappoint with two stunning upsets.
Newly crowned Women’s Strawweight championship Rose Namajunas upset longtime champ Joanna Jedrzdjczky with and K.O victory in the first round.
The grudge match of the night between Bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt and former champ TJ Dillashaw ended halfway through the second round. Dillashaw got the upper hand with a left to the face, knocking Garbrandt to the ground, followed by a ground and pound to end the match.
UFC 217 certainly delivered as one of the best cards of 2017, maybe even the decade. UFC 218 certainly will have a lot to live up to.

talking with the brother the other day and threw news articles have read that GSP suffered a neck injury as a result of the fight. Nothing too serious but it could place on delay on the Whittaker fight.

I hope that fight comes to fruition, I'll be going to the West end myself. Would love to see Australia have an UFC champion. We had a contender in the little weight division, can't remember his name (George someone I think) but Whittaker is the closest we have to a champion

Only saw the last fight highlights of the Gsp v bisping but did catch the post fight interviews. After reviewing the fights on YouTube what a fight night that would of been. I have read today the Whittaker may take on Gsp in Perth next year at UFC 221 but is yet to be confirmed. If this is true it's time to go west for your old mate BigJ, nice article mate, well done.
