Sydney Sevens live stream: How to watch rugby sevens online and on TV

By The Roar / Editor

The Sydney Sevens gets underway on Australia Day, with South Africa and Canada looking to defend their victories in the men’s and women’s tournaments respectively. This is The Roar‘s ultimate guide to streaming the tournament online and watching each match on TV.

The tournament gets underway on Friday, January 26 and continues on Saturday, January 27 and Sunday, January 28. It starts at 10am (AEDT) on Friday and Sunday, with the earlier start time of 9am (AEDT) on Saturday.

The women’s tournament will be played before the men’s on each day, with finals set to be played on the Sunday afternoon and evening for both the men and women.

In 2017, the men’s final saw South Africa beat England in the final by 29 points to 14, while the women’s final was closer, with an all-American battle seeing Canada defeat the USA 21-17.

Australia had disappointing performances, with the host nation finishing fourth in both tournaments.

How to watch the tournament on TV

The only way to watch every match of the Sydney Sevens on TV will be through Fox Sports. They are broadcasting Friday and Sunday from 9:30am (AEDT) and 8:30am (AEDT) on Saturday, allowing for a half-hour pre-game show before play commences.

Fox Sports will use Channel 506 to broadcast the matches, with coverage scheduled to end shortly after the conclusion of each day’s play. That will be 9:30pm (AEDT) on the first two days of the tournament and 10pm (AEDT) on the Sunday.

To watch Foxtel’s coverage, you will need to have a valid Foxtel TV subscription, complete with the sports package.

How to stream the tournament online

Because the Sydney Sevens is being broadcast exclusively by Foxtel, the only way to stream it will be through one of their dedicated streaming services.

These allow you to stream the programming shown on TV, however, there are a few ways to do this and the best method for you depends on your situation.

If you don’t already have a TV subscription, then the best way to stream the action will be to use Foxtel Now. This is a service provided by Foxtel which allows you to stream their channels, with the sports package starting from $29 per month.

On the other hand, if you already have a TV subscription, you’ll want to use the Foxtel App. The app will be free for you to download and use from either the Google Play or App Store.

Both applications are available to use on any device you may own.

Interesting point Cuw,regarding South Africa, but last season, after losing those brilliant players to Super rugby, they did continue on to take out the series. I fully agree, with your assessment of NZ, but then again, the new coach, the Scot, Laidlaw, seems to be having so much trouble in handling the players. Like he's up & down like a yoyo.

will be interesting to see how Saffas deal with losing Senatla , Agaba and Smith after these matches to super rugger. all 3 are very quick and do pack power. i think that will open it up for the Fijians. though they have lost a few like Nakarawa, Tuisova and Kolinisau ; newbies seem to be going great. when they are on song :D NZ i think still lack the firepower that Ben Lam , Reiko Ioane , Bryce Heem gave with speed and size. all 3 are sprinters and over 100kg. also DJF and Stowers retiring left a big hole in leadrship. 7 more legs to go and the team with least injuries are going to be with the best chance.

Well scrum, I appreciate good rugby,& i think my assessment, of this excellent Blitzbokke side is warranted. They have class all over the park. As I said, the NZ squad, is presently rebuilding, with a Scots coach, that really doesn't seem to have the key to them. He has some very promising young talent at hand, but as we have seen in Sydney, he's up & down like a yoyo. IMO, I don't think he will last long with the NZ Sevens squad. . To say we (NZ) dominate rugby, might be true in 15's, ATM, but Sevens is a different story. We're up there, but not world beaters. . I still reckon, barring injuries, that this magnificent South African team will defend their World Rugby Series title, again this year. Try watching them, as they are finalists, once again in Sydney.

Muzzo obviously not applicable to you but some Kiwis find it very difficult to give any teams other than the ABs credit for anything. Terribly sad to be so defensive & negative especially when NZ dominate Rugby.

Obviously, P2R2, you don't watch to much in the way of Seven's, with that response. To say the AB's didn't give them a chance in Cape Town, is a tad out of whack. Like calling them the Fizzboks!! Really mate, why put teams down? FFS, Last seasons series, they played the game, in a way that was far superior to any team on the circuit, & with a minor hiccup in the Cape they still remain second on the ladder. Being a Kiwi, I do realise that NZ,ATM, is rebuilding, & making a very good fist of it, with some new young talent, such as Eroni Clarke's 18 year old son, Caleb, now in the squad.. So Buddy, keep watching the game, as you just might end up having an appreciation of a very quick game of rugby, & we will see, at the end of the series, who ends up on top. Barring to many injuries, I'll stick with the South Africans.

all Teams are the one's to beat Muzzo...Fizzboks will only be as good as the other teams allow...in CT the ABs didnt give them a chance...and being current title holders only means EVERYONE is out after them....could be vulnerable as they showed in CT...

Nice little bit of information Roar, & thanks. Just finished watching the Black Fern v Japan game, & one could see as to why both Blyde, & Woodman, picked up awards at the World Rugby awards night. Woodman scoring 4 tries & Blyde 2. IMO this Black Fern team look the team to beat, in the womens, & who could really go past, the class team act, that is the Blitzbokke? The NZ team, although at present, are leading the Series, & rebuilding very well, could with luck, maybe, push them, but as I said, the Blitzbokke, will be the one's to beat. After all, they are the current World Rugby series title holders.

Thank you Roar editors for publishing this information. Could you not also look into publishing the schedule of Super trials coming up. The Tahs are playing Highlanders in Queenstown on Feb2. But I only know this because I saw it on a sign in a Queenstown street when I was recently there. Trials often 'go to the people' and play in non regular venues. Could not these venues and times be published? Anyway looking forward to the sevens. Should be great.
