Warner fears international career is over

By News / Wire

Former Australian vice-captain David Warner fears his international career could be over because of his role in cricket’s ball-tampering scandal.

“In the back of my mind I suppose there is a tiny ray of hope that I may one day be given the privilege of playing for my country again, but I am resigned to the fact that that may never happen,” he told a press conference in Sydney on Saturday.

Warner and axed captain Steve Smith received one-year suspensions for their role in the affair while batsman Cameron Bancroft has been banned for nine months.

Addressing the media for the first since Bancroft was caught tampering with the ball during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town last week, Warner said he took responsibility for his actions.

But he refused to say if he was the chief architect or if other teammates were involved in the decision to use sandpaper on the ball, frustrating reporters and a nation demanding answers.

“I am here to talk about the part I played in this. It’s inexcusable. I am sorry,” Warner said.

Asked if retirement was an option, Warner said: “That’s something that I will continue to sit down with my family and weigh up all my considerations before I make any decisions.”

Warner cut short the press conference when asked if he was being singled out as the mastermind of the scandal.

He also failed to answer questions asking if anyone else but the banned trio knew of the cheating plot, or if he had ball tampered before.

its All about Candice and the wags. The tears , stop it this is the most embarrassing thing in sport ever. This is worse than the Ben Johnson and mike Tyson incidents combined. Just take your ban and leave your families out of it. Stop playing the poor family card when your living in 10 mill mansions.

Wearing the same dark suit and white shirt without tie combo. Is that standard apology getup as advised by PRs?

Warner aussie career future: ODI's: Never again he may as well of retired from ODI's at the press conference, no chance he will play that again. T-20's: A good chance he might play T-20 cricket for the national team again.. At his age and a suspension, i can't see him haveing the will or the body haveing the will to do with all three formats after all this saga now at his age when he returns. Tests: Unlikely maybe only a 10% chance at best if that. Very rarely when over 30 and you lose your place for whatever reason do you get back into the side. And especially if the player is off the rails or controversial eg a Micheal Slater or KP, two examples of guys who were big personalities on and off the field and once dropped after aged 30 didn't get back in the team, the mountain was to big and also drawing a line in the sand and picking new guys who are younger.. So agesim and history is now an enemy to Dave warner in red ball cricket.. I don't think he will play test cricket again, he certainly won't make the ashes side next season and will be 33 when the 2019-2020 sheffield shield season starts. Shane Warne is one rare example of a guy making the side again after aged 30 and over, he was out for a year, but dave warner is NOT the great shane warne the best bowler probably and best spinner of all time.. When steve waugh got dropped for a while and matt hayden and damien martyn they were all in there 20's and became test regulars more or less again by age 30 So Dave warner will basically be a travelling salesman in T-20 cricket just playing endless meaningless T-20's in tournaments around the world..

Warner is not a leader, so he can never be put in any leadership role His antecedents with his current boof head stupidity, he should be handing his baggy green back . Hand in his baggy blue cap and no IPL etc . Warner has more chance of ‘pick pocketing the queen’ than playing for Aus again

I have to agree. Too much shit has gone on. It was just over a year ago that Smith had a "brain fade" looking up to the sheds for opinions on whether to use DRS. There are too many examples of poor sportsmanship in recent memory . Don't mind playing it hard but fair but this has been coming for a while. You stir someone up, they bag your wife and you, then your team try to claim moral highground, in SA of all places. (I had death threats wearing my WB's jersey in 95 at Ellis Park!) Then you deliberately pull off a hair brained attempt to cheat in front of the world. Bancroft had no form, Smith was the poster boy with some form. Warner is a moron who has been allowed to transgress for years and has been conspicuous for not fronting up, even today. Time for some integrity checks moving forward.

Pessimistic? What is it about this situation, or Lehmann's involvement, we should be optimistic about?

You judge coverage wrong, as this culmination of unsporting antics by the Aussies has gone on for years. The majority of the public tired of it years ago. But now the envelope has been pushed to the limit and only confirms what has been going on for years. The penalties now look quite proportionate for the years of arrogance and unsporting actions. Witnessing the two teams shaking hands before the 4th test looks a great start in cleansing themselves from the murky ungentlemanly past...oh you get 25 years for murder in OZ. ?

Obviously it means less or nothing can be made of not answering those two questions when he didn’t answer the others either.

I was called pessimistic last week when I said it was sandpaper! Anyway, nice try attacking the person instead of the argument. What part do you disagree with?

Couldn’t agree more! I have personally played in a professional side for a number of years and never experienced any kind of plan that didn’t involve discussion or some kind of acknowledgement from the entire team and coaching staff. What do you all think happened? Warner popped over to Smith at the lunch break and whispered, “listen I’ve been to the local hardware store and picked up some sandpaper, I’m going to give it to Cameron and ask him to scratch up the ball”. Warner wanders over to Bancroft whispers sweet nothings into his ear and slides the paper into his pocket, whilst Smith nods and winks at Bancroft from the other side of the room. Bancroft has been spotted before alongside other players clearly putting sugar into his pocket during the ashes (you can view the clip on YouTube), you can’t tell me that this guy along with Warner just happen to be secretive rogues and that nobody else in the team has ever spotted or overheard their discussions. It’s the “win at all costs” culture of this toxic team made up of distinctively average (by Australian standards) players and I guarantee that this has been happening for a number of years under the leadership of Lehmann. A guy who will happily dish it out but turns to mush and tears just like the others when they are finally caught. It’s like watching the school bullies get expelled. They always crumble into wailing emotional wrecks. Today’s PC proved this, as the only thing he actually addressed over the crocodile tears was that the culture needed to change, clearly making a point that it’s much bigger than any individual. Culture is after all by definition collective not individual. There is a clear cover up and unfortunatley for him Warner (in the eyes of the public an obvious villain) has been thrown under the bus and made the scapegoat, in order to save the blushes of a team that in the eyes of a nation and the world are and have been willing to collectively plan, scheme and cheat in order to win.

Same condition he had in the last test. Do you think he would pull out of the IPL for fun?

I’m speculating like everyone else. It could be on legal advice. But the CA guy there seemed to facilitate Warner not answering questions. It’s the more likely reason.

Do you blokes ever look at what you say and think about how outrageously pessimistic you lot are? Have you ever thought about sad your life must be that you see the worst in everybody? As somebody said the other day neither of you two have literally contributed anything positive to this sight
