After disappointment in the 100-metre event last night, Cameron McEvoy will begin his chance for redemption in the one-lap dash.

He is the second fastest qualifier for the event, holding a personal best of 21.55. He looked tired last night though and while it’s not imperative to go that fast in the heats, he could do with a confidence-restoring swim.

One man who has no excuse for conditioning is James Magnussen. The man known as the missile has only swum one over event at the Games, helping Australia to gold in the 4×100-metre relay. Now, in his only individual event, he will be favoured to feature in the final at very least.

Ben Proud goes in as the quickest qualifier, while South African Bradley Tandy, Canadian Yuri Kisil, Aussie James Roberts and Englishman Thomas Fannon all present solid opposition for the favourites once the event reaches its finals over the next 48 hours.

Another Aussie with a chance to continue his golden meet is Mitch Larkin. Already with two gold medals to his name, he will attempt to do the same in the 200-metre backstroke, where he will receive strong opposition from Luke Greenbank, Xavier Castelli, Josh Beaver, Conor Ferguson and fellow Aussie Bradley Woodward.

The list behind Larkin will be licking their lips at a chance to go for gold, with Larkin juggling a heavy event schedule and likely not to be at full fitness once the finals hit.

Emily Seebohm will aim to continue the redemption trend in the 50-metre backstroke after lucking out in both the 100 and 200-metre version of the events, while another Aussie in Laura Taylor will go in as favourite for the women’s 200-metre butterfly.

That is shaping as a quality duel between Taylor and Isle of Man competitor Charlotte Atkinson.

Surprised McKeon is swimming the 200 fly. I expect Groves will aim for this event for Tokyo.

Women's 200-metre butterfly Heat 2 Taylor and McKeon are off to a good start in the middle lanes of this second heat. Looks like McKeon is well ahead during the first 50 and she leads Zavaros of Canada by four tenths at the end of the first lap. Into the second now and McKeon maintains that lead with Taylor fading in the middle of the pool. McKeon is up on Zavaros and Thomas at the halfway point. McKeon now fades during the third 50. Zavaros, Taylor and Thomas up to the third 50 and there's not much in it - in fact,McKeon is up by just four one hundredths of a second with 50 to run. It's going to come right down to the wall. McKeon is back to third with 20 to swim and Thomas takes the win in 2.07.72 ahead of Taylor and Zavaros, McKeon through in fourth. Might be a struggle to qualify for McKeon.

Now into the third 50 and Throssell is starting to pick up the pace, shutting the gap to Atkinson, but not quite getting past her as they hit the wall at 150. Atkinson leading by half a second. Into the final 50. Atkinson fading in the final 50 and the gap is closing. It's going right down to the wall and Brianna Throssell stops the clock in 2.09.92, touching out Atkinson on the wall with Macinness in third.

Women's 200-metre butterfly Heat 1 Away. Throssell and Atkinson of to a good start in this first heat, a straight final to come out of it. Gasson of New Zealand had the lead for just a moment, but that doesn't last long as Atkinson hits the front ahead of Macinnes at the end of the first 50. Back up the second lap now and it's Atkinson who will hold the lead by about half a second to Throssell.

Men's 50-metre freestyle Heat 7 The missile and McEvoy are away nicely in the 50-metre freestyle here. Sloan got away nicely in Lane 1, but won't be able to hang on as he fades during the second half of the race. It's the Aussie duo to take the front with McEvoy stopping the clock in 22.06 ahead of Magnussen, who stopped it at 22.23 and Kisil through in third for Canada.
