2018 Commonwealth Games: Swimming Night 6 finals live updates, results, blog

By Scott Pryde / Expert

The final night of swimming at the 2018 Commonwealth Games will see nine gold medals go on the line, with a pair of relays and the 1500-metre event headlining. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).

It will all get underway with another chance for Ariarne Titmus though. The young Australian middle and long distance swimmer claimed gold last night in the 800-metre final and will have another chance in the 400.

While it’ll be English duo Holly Hibbott and Eleanor Faulkner challenging her, Titmus is a clear favourite with a qualifying time which was a second better than either of her rivals.

The middle-distance race will be followed up by a pair of sprint events, with Englishman Benjamin Proud the favourite in the 50-metre freestyle race. He will be challenged by three Aussies, with Cameron McEvoy, James Magnussen and James Roberts all qualifying for the final, while Bradley Tandy will also be there.

Mitch Larkin, who picked up gold in the 50, 100 and 200-metre backstroke events will be aiming to add another when he turns out in the 200 IM. Tiredness may be a factor, but he has qualified in Lane 4, with 400 IM champion Clyde Lewis also in the race alongside Scotland’s Daniel Wallace.

Emily Seebohm will be aiming for redemption when she turns out in the women’s 50-metre freestyle. The Australian has missed out in both the 100 and 200-metre backstroke, but will have to overcome Georgia Davies and Kylie Maase in the final.

In the men’s 1500-metre race, Mack Horton will be the heavy favourite. The Olympic silver medalist doesn’t have to compete with China’s Sun Yang this time and based on personal best times alone, has a four-second advantage to Daniel Jervis and an eight-second advantage to Jack McLoughlin.

The 4×100-metre medley relays will wrap up swimming at the Commonwealth Games, with Australia heavy favourites in both events.

Be sure to join The Roar for live coverage of the final night at the pool from 7:30pm (AEST) and don’t forget to add a comment below.

I love watching the 1,500. Brings back memories of watching Perkins and Kowalski, Hackett and Perkins. Such a huge effort to swim at a good pace for that long and then in the last few hundred go faster again. There's an aura about this race and winners of it seem to be held in a higher regard than winners of other distances. Great swim by McLoughlin too!

Chalmers a length behind Proud through th efirst 50. By the wall, he shuts it to half a length, Chalmers going very hard early. Three-tenths the gap with 50 metres to go. Chalmers nails the turn, but he is slowing up here. Struggling to come over the top and running out of room! He is running out of room and Chalmers has won it on the wall! Another Commonwealth Games Record for Australia and there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN IT! Chalmers left it until the absolute death but he gets it down over Ben Proud, with South Africa coming through in third place. Chalmers made up seven-tenths in the freestyle. Again, what a race. Sensational. Nine-hundredths of a second on the line.

Irvine and Guy now for Australia and England respectively. Guy is pushing to the front and at the halfway mark of butterfly, it's England up by three-tenths of a second. Looks like Chad Le Clos is closing the gap as well, but Irvine now down half a length. Australia are going to need a miracle for Chalmers.

Peaty and Packard into the water. Peaty is more than a body length behind as he jumps into the water, moves into a clear second place and closes the gap to Packard. The gap is 1.3 seconds at the end of 150 metres, with Packard desperately trying to hang on. He has half a length, and now it'll be Irvine vs Guy up the pool. They are virtually level, Peaty hitting the front before he finishes!

Men's 400-metre medley relay final Away! Larkin needs a very good start here for Australia and he seems to have one, pushing out into the lead ahead of Greenbank. He has half a length 30 metres into it and by the end of the 50, he has eight-tenths. Larkin continues pushing through the second 50 and takes close to a body length - more than in fact as he comes to the wall. That's the exact start Australia needed here.
