Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens Men's and Women's finals live scores, blog

By Nick Kelland / Roar Guru

Match result:

New Zealand claimed the gold medals in both men’s and women’s rugby sevens at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Match preview:

Only Australia’s women have made it through to the Rugby Sevens finals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, but there’ll be plenty to watch as the medals are decided. Join The Roar for live scored from 9:30am AEST.

First, the men.

On Saturday, Australia were beaten by a strong English outfit, who themselves put in a come from behind effort to advance to the medal rounds – in the process relegating the Aussies to a 5th place finish at best.

For the Australians, it was their first loss of the tournament following strong wins over Samoa and Jamaica.

However, there’s plenty of action to happen today, with Fiji and England the two favourites given their red-hot form in the Gold Coast.

The Fijians were utterly dominant over Sri Lanka, and are the team to beat. South Africa are their semi-final opponents, however, and won’t lie down easily.

In the other semi, England tackle a New Zealand side that, despite being struck down by injuries, should compete strongly.

In the women’s, the Australian side have continued their Olympic gold medal form with a strong showing in the first two days of action.

First up wins over Wales and England were clinical, followed by a solid outing against Fiji. They face Canada in the semi-final, and will play the winner of the England and New Zealand fixture should they advance.

Prediction
Men’s Winners: Fiji
Women’s Winners: Australia

Womens was Russian roulette, mens NZ outsmarted Fiji, but that referee was mindboggling, unbelievably strict on Fiji, McGaw would have been yellow carded after 5 minutes with this guy, NZ then with a 14 point lead played chicken and negative tactics like they had only a seven point lead.

I haven't watched many matches this weekend, but the reffing has seemed a bit sub-standard. Are these the same refs from the circuit?

Can the New Zealand men now back up the women's effort with a win in the men's gold medal match? Or will it be Fiji? That's the last match of the tournament, coming up next.

Who was the Aussie girl that kicked it out thinking they’d won? Classic.

Impressive comeback from Australia from 0-12... unfortunately, it is all for naught, and New Zealand come away with the gold. Aussies still did us proud with silver, England get the bronze.
