Chiefs charge past Reds in Super Rugby

By Murray Wenzel / Wire

The Queensland Reds have prolonged Australian rugby’s horror run against New Zealand opposition, falling 36-12 at Suncorp Stadium to the Chiefs.

The Hamilton Super Rugby outfit was far too slick in what shaped as a hiding when they led 24-0 at halftime on Saturday night.

But the Reds, who lost skipper James Slipper through injury in the first half, rallied to save face in the second, with Samu Kerevi scoring two tries before a late Samisoni Taukei’aho five-pointer sealed a crucial Chiefs bonus point.

It was the 35th consecutive loss by an Australian Super Rugby club to a New Zealand side as the Chiefs improved to 6-2.

The result completed a limp 24 hours for Australian rugby after the Waratahs were held scoreless for the first time in a dismal 29-0 loss to the Lions in Sydney on Friday night.

The Chiefs’ dominance started innocently enough when gun flyhalf Damien McKenzie slotted a penalty after a minor Reds line-out infringement.

But it got ugly fast as Canadian Tyler Ardron scored and fullback Charlie Ngatai ran through untouched for a 17-0 lead in as many minutes.

Solomon Alaimalo dropped the ball over the line after another McKenzie break but even the flyhalf’s early departure soon after thanks to a head knock didn’t slow the visitors.

Knock-ons, slow service, poor kick choices and hesitant defence didn’t help the Reds as All Blacks lock Brodie Retallick barged over for another.

Aidan Toua capped a forgettable first 40 minutes for the Reds by throwing a pass over the sideline when the tryline beckoned.

Substitute George Smith’s first appearance of the season after December back surgery did help the Reds hold their ground in front of 14,002 fans.

Caleb Timu shook off a big hit to be awarded what appeared to be a clever Reds try when he reached out and planted the ball on the upright’s padding.

But, in a scenario that coach Brad Thorn could only offer a wry smile to, the decision was reversed when big screen replays showed he had knocked on just as Jono Lance was lining up the conversion.

I saw a documentary years ago about Keith Quinn the longtime rugby commentator. He went out of his way to learn how to pronounce players names prior to games. He would have a board that had notes on players & pronunciation of their names was on that. With Pasifika players he would either contact them directly or if that wasn’t possible, seek the advice of colleagues or friends who had the knowledge to assist him. He saw it as part of being a professional broadcaster.

Fair tackle. His right arm was wrapping around at contact but Timu went backwards due to the impact.

Souths are top of the table now with Captain Quade .Very healthy crowd at Chipsy Wood to watch the master at play. Slightly more at Suncorp, but they were false figures, as 70 percent were Chief fans.

Let’s be real, this was always going to happen. As much as everyone wants to carry on about the back line, it was the Chiefs forwards who blasted the Reds pack off the park in the first half. Our young pack has improved immensely but they are still young and Chiefs players like Sam Cane and Brodie Rettalick are a class apart. Losing our most experienced starting forward and captain, Slipper, in the first 20 didn’t help either, while the Chiefs had the benefit of claws sharpened in the New Zealand conference for the first half of the season. The young Reds will benefit from the experience. Chiefs forward dominance is what led to the admittedly terrible kicking based first half of back play, but I thought the Reds did bloody well to regather in the second half and keep it to a draw. They showed more promise in attack in the second half, particularly the second try where Lance and Kerevi combined to identify an opportunity on the blind side and switch the direction of the attack for Samu to score. Also Timu’s attack off the line out was an excellent innovation, it was just unlucky that he missed scoring at the last moment. I still think the Reds need Paia’aua in at 12 to better create opportunities for the outside backs and to help with the kicking game. Kerevi showed his worth though in attack though and I reckon he could be started at 13, with Perese or CFS to rotate off the wing to address Kerevi defensive deficiencies. Paia’aua is clearly available, he played 15 for Norths on the weekend. I do think Thorn needs to rethink Alex Mafi as reserve hooker. His lineout throwing has been unreliable all season and has been costly for the Reds in the last two games. He often throws too hard and flat and it goes past the catcher before they can get up. I don’t remember Andrew Ready having lineout problems and reckon he should be given a run. I would also like to see the playmakers instructed to use more of the flat kicks to the sidelines that Thorn’s playmakers did in the NRC. It is a great way to maximise the territorial game if the attack has run out of puff, as it guarantees that the opponent has to play a defensive lineout and probably an exit kick, rather than risking handing them the ball before the defense is set.

Absolutely needs results. He punted two senior players (Frisby was the other) just days after naming them in the squad, fans were furious returning season tickets, there were suggestions last year that they got an advance on their funding from the RA and they have a massive overhead draining money from the swamp.

Hopefully, in the not too distant future Australian Rugby will be once again a source of pleasure and not of angst. Fingers crossed.....

Drongo, in a sensible unprejudiced universe we may be an injury or two away from a Wallaby selection from club rugby.

Peyper could have stopped when he stopped for George smith head knock. at that point it was past 80. if he stopped the game noone would have complained. he chose to continue the game. the only team who could benefit was Chiefs - the BP try.

You should see last years SR games. Duncan was very good. Actually more consistent than QC at that time He was either run metres, DBs and clean breaks. Or delivering a lot of tackles without many mistakes (against Saders and Canes for example)

I've never seen a really convincing display from DP in SR but he hasn't had much of a chance. I do think he has the potential, but all I can recall from previous efforts is some dropped ball at crucial times.

Agree jury is out but I think the judging should begin a little later than 8 games, he had a good career, did well with QLD country. Also I don't think the Reds had many applicators that rated highly. The one I cant understand is the assistant who was head coach at Rebels for 2 wins. I think BT needs better support, Stiles you maybe correct would have been better retained in some position. The revolving door of coaches and player will not get the Reds anywhere, teams are built not manufactured overnight.
