Brumbies' Peni banned for five Super weeks

Brumbies winger Chance Peni has been banned for five Super Rugby weeks by SANZAAR after pleading guilty to a dangerous tackle that wrecked Crusaders veteran Israel Dagg’s hopes of an All Blacks recall.

Peni was cited after the Brumbies’ Super Rugby loss to the Crusaders on Saturday, in which he was given a yellow card during the first half for his clumsy hit on Dagg.

Dagg failed a concussion assessment and he injured a knee when he fell akwardley after the hit by Peni, with the injury expected to keep him sidelined for several weeks.

His coach Scott Robertson says the veteran All Black is unlikely to play before the New Zealand Test squad is named on May 20 for three home Tests against France in June.

Peni only finished serving a four-game suspension for a dangerous tackle at the start of the year.

In his finding, SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee Chairman Nigel Hampton QC said that Peni’s previous record counted against him, although took into account his remorse and guilty plea.

“The Foul Play Review Committee deemed the act of foul play merited a mid range entry point of five weeks,” Hampton said in a statement.

“The player has received two previous periods of suspension for similar incidents in the preceding 12 months, and the Foul Play Review Committee added a further week to the sanction for that aggravating factor.

“However, taking into account mitigating factors including the player’s remorse shown on field and his pleading guilty at the first available opportunity, the Foul Play Review Committee reduced the suspension to five weeks.”

Peni, who joined the Brumbies this season from the Western Force, had been pushing for Test selection for the Wallabies’ series against Ireland.

He won’t be available to play until after that June Test window.

pathetic that the officials after viewing it on slo-mo thought only a yellow. what happened to Dagg is irrelevant . as far as i know WR directive says any contact on the head is a red . that is why SBW got a red. in the weekend Frenchie Gallan got a red that would make Peni want to cry !! Peyper seems to have his own Law book - DUH

He won't post which is so predictable. The guy needs to get rid of his green and gold eye patch and his victim mentality, he's becoming loathsome.

Gday OB Isn't one of the greatest feelings in our game, bending your back, head to one side and drive straight through a bloke - this was a gilt edged opportunity to do just that, why would you let that slide?

HL He would've got away with just pushing Dagg over the line rather than, attempting the scrag he came up with......reminded me of another mozzie plying his game over the ditch, that had a penchant to tackle, around the neck. Then, they gave him tackle lessons by moving him off the D-line to be a sweeper, so he didn't have to tackle anymore....watch this space cos Peni may just get, the same tackle lessons.

What should seriously concern his coaching staff was that Dagg was hard up a against the touchline with no where to go, you are never going to get easier opportunity to lower your shoulders and drive a man over the side. A really gutless soft option taken by Peni, it was easier to make a proper tackle than do that.

a show of remorse shouldnt matter a damn when its the third one in a year, needs serious coaching on his tackling if he wants to remain a professional rugby player.

Ref and TMO should really have picked this up on Saturday night - it was a clear red at the time and that is what the judiciary has found as well. Considering that the Crusaders scored twice whilst Peni was off the field - you can only wonder what the score would have being if he had being off the field for the rest of the game?

I think he gets excited about making a hit and forgets how to tackle properly at the last second

Yeah it looked more like a tackle that went pear shaped than any intent. Still, got to show more care I guess. I wonder how much they took into account the concussion or knee injury...

He had at least one suspension whilst with the Force as well, clumsy shot causing things to go pear shaped. Pity as he is a legit threat with the ball.

Good, very predictable, pity they couldnt determine that with all eyes on it. It was that obvious.
