Socceroos the better team against the Danes, but must win against Peru

By Doran Smith / Roar Guru

In spite of controlling much of the tempo of the game against Denmark, the Socceroos failed to collect the three points on offer.

The Socceroos didn’t have the right execution in the final third and to put it simply they didn’t put the ball in the back of the net. The Socceroos haven’t scored a goal in open play in their first two matches in the world cup in Russia.

The Socceroos couldn’t put their imprint on their first two games until they were losing by one goal. They seemed to play better football and have better shape when having a one goal deficit both against the French and then in the second game with the Danes as their opposition.

The Socceroos should have claimed at least four points from the six points available. Their performance was fantastic in both of the games that they have been involved in.

The tactics have been good from Bert Van Marwijk, but the end product hasn’t been evident for the Socceroos. The substitutions that Van Marwijk has made have been his weak point as far as tactics are concerned. I still believe that Daniel Arzani should have started against the Danish and he should have brought Tim Cahill off the bench.

The Socceroos needed to attack and collect the three points on offer

I would make mass changes against Peru as the Socceroos need to make some alterations. It is a game where nothing less than the win will be good enough. My team would be as follows:

Goalkeeper: Matt Ryan- Ryan universally referred to as the number one goalkeeper.

Left Back: Aziz Behich- Behich the second best player for the Socceroos against Denmark.

Left Centre Back: Matt Jurman- His selection will allow Marc Milligan to play in midfield.

Right Centre Back: Trent Sainsbury- Sainsbury has been outstanding, but needs to improve on his first half performance against Denmark.

Right Back: Josh Risdon: Risdon needs to improve defensively, but has been a solid performer for the Socceroos.

Defensive Midfield: Marc Milligan (Captain)- His passing has been exemplary, playing in midfield will allow Aaron Mooy to push forward more.

Left Sided Midfielder: Daniel Arzani- He has to start, the best option on the left side of midfield.

Centre Midfield: Jackson Irvine- Irvine deserves a chance to start and play ninety minutes.

Right Sided Midfielder: Matthew Leckie- The best player on the field against Denmark.

Attacking Midfield: Aaron Mooy- Must be given more freedom if he is to get opportunities to make an impact in the final third.

Striker: Tim Cahill- We have to try and win the game and Cahill will be needed, because of his aerial ability.

First Substitute: Mile Jedinak- Displayed that he is a good option to have off the bench in the friendly against Hungary.

Second Substitute: Massimo Luongo- Luongo ill be a handy option in the midfield as an impact player.

Third Substitute: Robbie Kruse- Kruse will be more influential as a sub than as a starter.

Jurman is a brilliant defender and I believe that Milligan should play in the midfield so that Mooy can play a more attacking role.

Wouldn't be changing a back 4 that have played so well together so far.
