By Laine Clark / Wire

Veteran Brisbane forward Sam Thaiday has announced he will retire at the end of the 2018 NRL season.

Thaiday, 33, had initially been hopeful of earning another contract but has decided to draw the curtain on his 16-season career.

The veteran of 29 Origins, 32 Tests and almost 300 NRL games broke the news on Friday in true Thaiday style – he made the announcement outside a Brisbane retirement village, dressed as an elderly man.

I think this was a great idea for a retirement press conference. We need more madness at mundane mid-week sports pressers!!

Good on you Sam. A great career for club, state and country. My favorite achievement of his is his affect on Blues fans.

Well done Sammy Thaiday. I hope you pick up a job in the media because I certainly believe you would be a fantastic breath of fresh air from the rubbish currently holding the microphones.

Sam was a good player and achieved all but had a tendency to hover around anyone with a microphone after a game.

I'm at least glad he opted not to go with "strangle wayne bennett" when he decided to go out memorably.
