Do lineout woes go hand in hand with Pooper against All Blacks?

By Fox / Roar Guru

The All Blacks annihilated the Wallaby lineout, stealing seven and winning six penalties at scrum time.

This completely disrupted and/or stole the Wallabies’ set piece ball. As Steve Hansen said post match that is where you win the game – and they put plans in place to do just that.

At the risk of bragging – okay so I am bragging – I said weeks ago the All Blacks would destroy the Wallaby lineout. People with nous like Nick Bishop insinuated that I was basing my analysis on last year’s statistics.

But my analysis was never based on last year – but rather what I believed would would happen this season. Whether one of The Roar’s most astute rugby scribes has guts to eat a bit of humble pie or not – he was wrong.

My reasons were simple – last season Stephen Moore threw much of the ball in. This year it was clear if Rob Simmons didn’t start then the more inexperienced lineout caller would be Adam Coleman who is still learning his trade at test level.

Furthermore claims from some Roarers that Tatafu Polota-Nau had got better at throwing in England before his return has to be balanced with the fact he is never throwing to the best defensive lineout in the world – which the All Blacks most certainly are.

The Wallaby lineout was a complete shambles that got attacked with devastating consequences in the context of the game. It was an echo of the 2015 World Cup final – but worse!

This does not speak well for Cheika and his fellow coaches.

Was it mere coincidence that with the Popper return the Wallaby lineout came under more scrutiny as it has in the past against the All Blacks with this combination?

Pocock didn’t play last season as we know. So my analysis was sound and proven right – bitter pill though it may be for some to swallow.

The AB lineout most certainly covered itself in glory – how many sides get seven lineout steals in a single Test match?

The big question now is what the hell is Cheika going to do?

And no, it is not a simple fix against this AB defensive lineout who clearly have the Wallaby measure.

Questions need to be asked – Pooper returned and so did the lineout woes, yet both had good games. In Pocock’s case the performance was outstanding.

But the All Blacks, yet again, largely nullified Pocock’s threat around the ruck – they are one of the few sides in world that seem to be able to do this with any sort of consistency – perhaps because they have seriously talented powerhouse backrow and a coaching staff that are second to none.

Hooper – despite his enormous value and world class abilities he gives to any side he plays in – still lacks weight and power. He hasn’t got enough serious upper body strength in the contact.

It was exposed at times in this Test – none more so than we hit the ruck to stop Sam Cane stealing the ball. Cane didn’t even move and got the steal. It was not the only time.

Hooper, like Pocock, is superb in the D but the combined hitting power of Sam Cane, Kieran Read and Liam Squire (who was a bull in the contact in this Test and is growing fast as Test no6) just has more ‘hurting power’ physically. However it was most certainly a great defensive first half from the Wallabies – the best I have seen from them.

The All Blacks weren’t as exhausted as you’d have imagined. Some Wallaby players, on the other hand, were visibly knackered ten minutes into the second half.

Congrats to Jake Maddocks on debut Test try – he may start next game on the wing or at the back – but will Simmons start for the sake of the lineout?

And will he stick with Pooper? Probably – but at what cost?

Pocock to 7, pick a genuine 8 who is a lineout option, Hooper to 12, Beale to 15 but swap with DHP in defense.

I am normally not a fan of players out of position, but hooper is one player that needs to move.either bulk up and go to hooker, or slim down and practice kicking ,and play at second five. he is possibly a new version of a very old position, a wing forward.his height really rules him out of the modern loose forwards.

Whoa, slight over reaction. There were some good things in your piece Foxy and you make some astute observations. Leading with a huge "I told you so" to Nic is a bit unedifying though I think. I'm glad you're back as you insinuated you may not be after you last little wrangle with Nic but you're obviously still salty from that encounter when there is no reason to be. I don't remember you saying weeks ago that the AB's would "destroy" the WB's lineout. I'm sure you'll correct me if I got that wrong though. You've listed some of your analysis here for your reasoning re: the lineout but I remember Nic asking you to be more specific back at the time and you seemed less forthcoming. I think this article says a bit about you and I appreciated the read. Thank you.

Chieka has only blooded players through injury to has favourites. Look at BPA for instance. Dropped after playing pretty well again the Irish. The list is long.

France did alright with two 9s v NZ in the world cup final in 2015. Yachvilli at 9 Parra at 10, then Jean-Marc Doussain came on to make his debut at 9. Only test player to make a debut in a world cup final.

Faf de Klerk did look surprisingly good against Argentina alright. When a rugby player looks like a teenage girl performances like that are unexpected.

No wrong Drongo and you always makes the same old predicable dribble to attack those on this site you have decided you don't like - Thorn will bring people back if the improvement continues there and I did not say in one season but bringing back fans in general is an issue for Super Rugby period at present and not just in Australia Furthermore "Fox, you always predict that the ABs will destroy every aspect of Wallaby play." That statement is utter rubbish and barely worth a response and tough luck Drongo if you can't handle me knowing something based on my knowledge of the game but am sure Nick will be pleased to know he has you as his Australian cheerleader and public defender! But I think he can handle himself just quietly and sometimes we get things wrong and sometimes right no matter who we are except perhaps you when comes to attacking those you don't like because you are blinded by your dislike for them- honestly as I have said before ,I feel sorry for you Drongo with all that anger and bitterness you have built up for whatever reason and it would seem to be heavily directed at Kiwis you have decided you don't like. Says more about you than it does about me mate Enjoy the next test - if you can

"The teams that successfully play two opensides do it without sacrificing ball carrying and the lineout." Playing Hooper and Pocock reminds me of when Eddie picked Waugh and Smith with Lyons at 8. Wasn’t sustainable and at least Eddie had the sense to stop it. Two great points Bakkies and the second makes for an interesting analysis by comparison as they are all different 7's

"The backs definitely lacked the pace of the AB." I think this is an issues on the flanks with DHP and at 10 and that acceleration of the marlk but I think the Wallaby backs lack the ability to change their plans on the fly and this is their biggest issue

Fox, you always predict that the ABs will destroy every aspect of Wallaby play. So taking credit and claiming you know better than a true expert, not just a consistently parochial cheer leader, where one prediction of dominance out of many comes true in a single match is, well, chest beating nonsense. You also predict d that Brad Thorn would ‘bring the fans back to Suncorp’. How did that go?

Roach was dropped for Poidevin. Cody only played 13 tests, hardly an all time great. But the real lesson is you have to choose if two players play the same position. Hooper or Pocock.

Great Video. I think the Boks have found a nine by the way. The little guy may not be in the same class as World Cup winners, Joost or Fourie Du Preez. And it's so true that the Saffa playmaker is the nine not the ten. But I think Faff De Klerk has been a revelation against England and so far against Argentina. The Bok attack has sped up 200% from last year. Boks still very much a work in progress, but Rassie is also backing a high risk, high reward game.

Kane thanks for that. It really does some up a lot of the depth problem we have been talking about. How balanced is the nz chart on that.

Here's won out of the box. Could it be the Brumbies gave the AB's the Blue Print for Saturday Night? Is it just me or was there a massive lineout parallels between the Brumbies vs Tah's last game. Given the timing wasn't spot on. I'm pretty sure the Arnold boys lined up the same way.
