Sydney announce impressive marquee signing of former Dutch international

Sydney FC have signed ex-English Premier League (EPL) player Siem de Jong as their marquee player on a season-long loan from Dutch giants Ajax.

The former Netherlands international, who can play as attacking midfielder or striker, scored two goals in six national team appearances and captained Ajax for two seasons.

He won four Eredivisie league titles in his first spell with the club from 2008 to 2014 and also played in the Champions League.

The 29-year-old de Jong tallied 22 appearances for Newcastle United in two EPL campaigns, before being loaned to Dutch side PSV.

He returned to Ajax for the 2017/18 season where he was used largely off the bench but still boasts a handy average of one goal every three games.

“Siem is a technically gifted footballer and one I believe can be instrumental in success for us this season,” Sydney FC coach Steve Corica said.

“He scores goals and creates them for others as well.”

De Jong said he saw a lot of similarities between the Sky Blues and Ajax.

“They’re both leaders in their league with a reputation for silverware and I want to uphold that here,” he said.

De Jong will wear Sydney’s No.22 jersey, while fellow import and former Reading EPL striker Adam le Fondre takes over the No.9 shirt from Brazilian Bobo, who left the club after setting an A-League goalscoring record last season.

Sydney still have one import spot left to fill for the 2018/19 A-League season.

The defending champion Sky Blues advanced to the last eight of the FFA Cup with a 2-1 away win over Cairns on Tuesday.

I had him in my FIFA team for a while - he was great in digital form, scored goals from a distance regularly.

I know you like to present youself on this board as the bloke who discovered the internet. Let us just say, you really don't know as much as you make out. Over the years, certainly during De Jong's time at Ajax, there have been many ways to watch the Eredivisie. On top of that, there are many ways to watch highlights, have been for a very long time now, and if that weren't enough, whenever Dutch clubs are involved in European competition, there are plenty of ways to watch that as well. If that weren't enough, as far back as 2001, I had access to a cable TV network which showed endless Euro sport, at least six channels, including stacks of Eredivisie, I kept that particular subscription going for exactly 13 years. And if that weren't enough, around 2006-07, I recall watching the KNVB Cup Final on SBS, which happened to feature an extra-time win by Ajax.

True enough, Buddy. I've done that in the past, but it's now virtually impossible to find any streams since the various leagues now have the right to shut down websites as soon as they identify piracy. Regardless, I don't believe any Aussies in huge numbers are getting up in the middle of the night to watch constantly buffering pirate streams. Heck people complain if they don't get sport in perfect HD quality. You honestly think these types event watchers are waking up at 2am to watch constantly buffering footage of Ajax vs Groningen? Especially, I don't believe people who constantly moan about Sokkah 24x7 are doing this. And, even more especially, I don't believe MQ/MrAFL/Grobbelaar/etc is doing this.

Nem, If you want to watch almost any league in the world it is possible by doing a little research and using a VPN of course. There are a number of sites where you can stream almost any football that is coming up and not just the EPL and La Liga etc. I'd say you have to be pretty dedicated though and be available at some very unsociable hours and I daresay not many people really venture out that far. Mind you there is an amazing amount of footage available on social media these days but it is clips and snapshots, not whole games. I watch a lot of MLS these days. If you do nothing else but want half an hour's entertainment, watch the weekly highlights show on Bein sports - assuming you have foxtel. What I like about it is the number of central and South Americans plying their wares and there is some really good talent on show, and a sprinkling of names you might be familiar with - not just Zlatan! On the subject of signings I prefer to wait and see what happens over the course of a few months and even then we may look at things differently. Personally I thought the whole Del Piero circus was detrimental to SFC as a whole although I accept it put bums on seats. It did little else though, and I would hope they learnt a lot from that venture.

Not much liked by Newcastle fans. He was always considered to be a sick note. He played maybe 20 games in his time there, over a bit over 2 years. Always injured. Had a collapsed lung as one of his injuries. Takes a good free kick. Occasionally has a good eye for a pass. The A-league may be at just the sort of pace that would suit him. I wouldn't count on him working too hard in an Australian summer, though.

I’m extremely keen to watch Central American club football. How were you watching Costa Rican club football around 2006? Let me know how you did it, or is it just another ALT-Fact.

When you say Carlos, are you talking about Carlos Hernandez? His golazos were already legendary amongst those with some knowledge of cental American soccer when he signed with the Victory. He scored two of the very best against the USA to help win los ticos qualification to the 2006 World Cup and he appeared in two WC games for the los ticos.

That's why I specifically mentioned: Broich, Berisha, Castro, Adrian, FBK, Carlos None of them had "good history with good clubs". Motivation is unknown until we see them playing.

I'm extremely keen to watch the Eredivisie. How have you been watching that competition over the past 2 seasons? Let me know how you do it, or is it just another ALT-Fact. You allegedly watch Aussie Rules, ALeague, FFA Cup, EPL, LaLiga, Eredivisie, CSL, MSL, SerieA, UCL, UEL, Bundesliga... any others? You post on multiple sokkah forums, plus on Aussie Rules forums. I don't know whether to laugh at you, or feel sad for you.

I just wanted to add something about Siem de Jong, he is even more flexible and adaptable than is stated in here. He can certainnly play as an attacking mid/striker, but he is an accomplished central midfielder, and can even play as a DM if required. Ajax let him go on loan a couple of years back because they had too many midfielders, including some outstanding youngsters who merited more game time (such is the lot of a club like Ajax). (Peter Bosz explaining that they already have 8 midfielders, even nine if you include Jairo Riedewald)

Good history with good clubs in top level comps, good age, good reputation, motivation to reset career, good skills (as per highlights vids) = good signing for the A-League and good publicity for Sydney FC. Whether he will turn out good is a different matter.

Anyone who knows a tiny bit about the Eredivisie knows about Siem de Jong. Not quite a regular at Ajax, but to be on the fringe of the best XI of a multi-championship winning club like Ajax, in a very good league, and still being only 29, says that he is a signing of the highest quality, make no mistake.

I always wonder, when people say "great signing" or "terrible signing", have they seen the player in match situations over a period of time? Or, is it just from video highlights on YouTube plus his ranking on a video game? I had never heard of Broich, Berisha, Castro, Adrian, Del Pierre, FBK, Carlos before they arrived. Then I saw them playing regularly well in ALeague & I was impressed so I said "great signing". By the same token I'd never heard of other foreigners who came to ALeague. Then I saw them playing regularly unimpressively in ALeague & I said "terrible signing".
