Please don't do it Choc!

By Owen Neidhart / Roar Rookie

Before you judge this opinion you have to understand where it’s coming from.

I’m a St George fan and watched Anthony Mundine for his entire career with the Dragons. I watched the 1999 grand final when the Melbourne Storm beat us, though Anthony ‘Choc’ Mundine played brilliantly. He talked rubbish in his rugby league, but his ability couldn’t be questioned.

When he went to boxing I knew he would be great. Not only was he an athlete, but he’s a showman. While people doubt his ability, you have to defer to people who actually know. Take for example Sven Ottke.

Ottke was asked eight questions as to who was the best he ever faced in the boxing ring. Not only did he name Mundine four times in the first seven questions but also named him the best opponent overall. That is some serious creditably.

I’ve only met Choc once in person. I was at the Armidale airport in NSW and Anthony Mundine happened to be walking past. (This was after his league career and his Ottke fight.)

I saw him walking towards me and all I said was ‘Hi, how are you going?’ Not only did Mundine acknowledge me, but he also slowed down and asked how I was. The humility he showed in that moment was amazing.

Mundine’s persona since his boxing days has been as the bad guy, however, his peers rate him highly.

However, if Mundine-Horn 2 happens, it does not help Choc.

My advice to Anthony Mundine would be, if you need the money then go for it as you’ve earned the payday. However, if it’s for respect, it won’t change a thing. The people who see beyond the entertainment and see skill know that you’ve already earned it.

Sven Ottke does.

Oh they know who he is they just hate him for allegedly robbing manny pacquaio. Teddy Atlas who was a former trainer to world champs mike Tyson and Michael Moorer had his famous rant when horn defeated Pacquaio and then called the horn v Crawford fight a vw bettle v a Ferrari and the VW was a bad driver. But who cares what some yank thinks.

Just like everyone else who milked Mundine’s name for a dollar, Green, Soliman, Geale, Wood etc pretty much any Aussie who fought him. I don’t know if Horn’s Mundine money would be enough to entice a legit fighter to our shores. But will see, hopefully Horn’s next opponent will be more credible like Amir Khan.

I think the real question here is if boxing can survive without Mundine???

Aussie media might embrace it but American media probably have no idea who horn is. It would be a step backwards for Crawford to take a rematch, it will never happen

You just keep digging yourself in deeper. The WBO allow their champions a title shot when they go up in weight. All your examples are when a champ gets beat except Mundine Soliman when the original opponent withdrew at the last minute and Sam stepped in, and that wasn't a rematch it was 4 fights later. Don't you realise you need to come up with an example where a long shot was easily beaten and then given a rematch. Tyson, Ali and Liston losing to an underdog , of coarse they'll be a rematch.

You're asking me to speculate on the future of Australia's up and coming boxers, you'll have to wait while I find my crystal ball. Now that Horn has no belt, he is irrelevant, but what he has, that those other boxers I mentioned don't, is a lot of money. He can afford to buy opponents with his Mundine money just like Green did when he enticed Jones Jr and Tarver to Australia. If you're judging boxers on their ability to headline a ppv event. Mundine 56 times, Horn 4 times, but only once was he the main drawcard, that was against England's 12th best welterweight and world #121 Gary Corcoran which from all reports sales were very disappointing, the fight went 11 rounds before the it was stopped for a cut. Horn showed against Crawford that he's not even close to world class, he had his chance and failed, you admitted yourself that Pacquiao aside there's not much on the resume, don't be fooled by the propaganda from team Horn they are just milking their 15 minutes of fame.

Oh here’s a question, please explain to me how Crawford got a title shot at Horn when he never fought at Welterweight??? I already know the answer but I want to hear you expert opinion. Oh also here are some other examples on fighters that got rematches when they got badly beat the first time Tyson v Holyfield 2 Ali v Norton 2 Liston v Patterson 2 Mundine v soliman 3 Just to name a few

I stand corrected on Dunn and Caparello but seriously mate, big deal. Are any of those fighters that you mentioned going to headline a ppv event anytime soon??? I think not. Horn is the only mainstream fighter that we have at the moment to carry the sport. All the others that you mentioned are mid card guys that will hopefully become world champions in their own right, although Dunn has already been the IBO super-middleweight champ ( for about ten seconds though) and Caprello was the Ibo light-heavyweight champ back in 2013, when he got his shot at a real title in 2014 against Sergey Kolaveu he got tko in two rounds. So whom else but Horn can carry the sport over the next twelve months to two years as if nothing happens in that time the sport will die again

Zac Dunn is booked to fight on 1.3.19 at the Melbourne Pavillion, opponent TBA. Blake Caparello is fighting Reagan Dessaix for the WBA Oceania light heavyweight title on 22.2.19 also at the Melbourne Pavillion, Flemington. You're way out of your depth mate are you even a boxing fan or just a Mundine hater/pretend journo?

By your logic Mundine deserves a rematch.

Rahman was a massive underdog, hence the rematch, had Lewis won as expected no rematch. Horn was a massive underdog and lost every round on every card so there's no comparison, poor example. Of coarse the WBO review panel is going to say the WBO got it right. Why don't you start your sentence with "Even though Pacquiao outlanded Horn 180-92 and in 11 of the 12 rounds and had him staggering around like a drunk in round 9, Horn deserves to win because" that way you're using facts. As I said you need to be in the top 15 to qualify for a title shot, however it's boxing, rankings can be changed without reason, Horn is not top 15 WBO. Two weeks ago Aussie Michael Zerafa went to England and went the distance with Kell Brook winning 2 or 3 rounds, you might recall 2 years ago Brook went up 2 weight classes and fought GGG and was ahead on points when the fight was stopped due to a broken eye socket. Jai Opetaia is an undefeated cruiserweight with a couple of regional belts. Bilal Akkawy is an undefeated supermiddleweight who is Canelo's main sparring partner, he has fought in Las Vegas, his last fight was at Maddison Square Garden New York. George Kamboses is an undefeated lightweight with a couple of regional belts he is Pacquiao's chief sparring partner. Tim Tszyu is an undefeated super welterweight with a huge future. All these boxers except Tszyu have at least one top 15 rank and are eligible for a world title shot, yet you never hear a whisper from the media, have you noticed a common thread? their last names. I rate these boys as good or better than Horn. Other Aussie boxers with a top 15 ranking who could possibly fight for a world title next are Blake Caparello, the Moloney brothers, Rohan Murdoch, Liam Paro, Jayde Mitchell, Billel Dib, Damien Hooper, Wes Capper, Dwight Ritchie, Nathaniel May, Regan Dessaix and Zac Dunn. Horn is all we've got? are you serious? take the blinkers off.

Rematches are for close fights, well what about every time some gets knocked out and they get a rematch??? Lewis v Rahman 1 for example. A rematch clause in the contract normally take care of that. Horn didn’t rob nothing, he was declared the winner by the judges then again by an independent review panel commissioned by the WBO, with the exact same result. So get over the fact that Pacquaio lost!!!! The WBO can grant a rematch for Horn v Crawford but I doubt they’ll do that as internationally Horn is one of the most hated men in boxing and it won’t sell tickets. Agree with Horn’s lack of true competition as it’s mostly old men but at the moment he’s all we’ve got

Firstly, rematches are for close fights and Horn did nothing in the 1st Crawford fight to warrant a rematch, he was totally outclassed. Secondly, being a former champ doesn't give him a claim to a rematch, he has to be ranked in the WBO top 15 at welterweight for a title shot, which he is not, he has no WBO ranking at all. Take away Horn's hometown robbery decision against Pacman and he is totally irrelevant, no names on his resume. Gary Corcoran is ranked 121. Pacquiao landed 180 punches to Horn's 92, outlanded him in 11 of 12 rounds and still lost. This is why Horn is hated overseas, he stole from Manny Pacquiao. Team Horn can drop all the names they want, fact is he'll have to buy his fights with his Mundine money, no one's knocking on his door, nothing to gain from beating Jeff Horn, bigger fish to fry.

That’s because it more believable than Mundine v Horn 2. Horn as the former champ does have a claim to the rematch. Mundine doesn’t have a leg to stand on

The media has been very critical, brutal in fact regarding Mundine's request for a rematch, yet in the same article talk about Horn's desire for a rematch with Crawford, which is far more outrageous. Horn was totally outclassed for 7 rounds then TKO'd, he should never of been in the same ring as Crawford and he's talking rematch, Crawford must be in hysterics, yet the media embrace Horn Crawford II.
