Darren Lehmann lands first coaching job since standing down as Australian boss

By News / Wire

Former Australian coach Darren Lehmann has been announced as the new Brisbane Heat mentor, in what will be his first coaching appointment since the ball tampering scandal in South Africa last year.

Lehmann ultimately resigned over the incident after players David Warner, Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft were also suspended.

But he continued to work developing talent with the national performance squad and other cricket pathway programs before entering the media.

News Corp reported Lehmann edged Queensland Bulls coach Wade Seccombe for the role, with former Heat batsman Brendon McCullum and international all-rounder James Hopes also applying.

Brisbane-based Lehmann had previously coached the Heat to their only title.

Brisbane Heat General Manager Andrew McShea said he was glad to have Lehmann onboard, and he would resume his position next week.

Lehmann, who earned 27 Test caps as a player, said he was chuffed to return.

“It was a wonderful experience at the time to be involved with building the Brisbane Heat at the start of the BBL and we had plenty of fun,” he said.

“I enjoyed watching the BBL and the Heat during the season and, as a coach, I am pretty excited to be working with the Heat players, who I know are as talented and determined as anyone going around.”

Most of what has been said has not been objective. He has had a good coaching career. And he gets blamed for Warner’s seething covert underhanded tactics??? This beggars belief. —- Give me a break!

I am a Bulls & Heat supporter. Vettori was unassuming & paid the price for the Heats' suicidal batting. As I said earlier, Hopes & Seccombe have a continuity of connection to Queensland Cricket & are excellent tacticians. Lehmann wouldn't have been my choice.

No, no, no please i’m a Queenslander to the core and the Heat are the team I support. This boys club mentality is pathetic and turns people away from the game. This is not a good appointment for QLD cricket.

Is he going to mentor them via walkie talkie?

Is there any other position that Boof could’ve found himself in. They are the only two options. —– Warner threw Smith and Boof under the bus. Bancroft tried to ingratiate himself into the team leadership. Smith was weak not to step on Warner’s seething grudges. —– Boof had no idea it was happening. It was done without him having a skerrick of knowledge of the idiocy. —— Boof maybe was a bit lackadaisical but, heck, he had been doing a good job till the sandpaper. —— I feel he has been treated unfairly in all of this. All of his career really. —— Lindy Chamberlain compared to OJ Simpson. Really?????????? I think you wouldn’t live to tell the tale if you said that directly to her. I find that extremely offensive.

“ mentor “ an experienced n trusted advisor....experienced ok, trusted advisor maybe not....I personally wouldn’t want my children to be mentored by him....my kids are all over 25 years old n I’m sure they can work it out themselves...how old was Smith n co ?

Lindy Chamberlain. OJ Simpson. Peoples' views differ. Sandpapergate. I personally believe Boof either had ''knowledge" or had his head in the sand like Smith. Additionally he was part of the problem with the declining culture. I would have gone with either Seccombe or Hopes. They don't attract the limelight, been great servants of Queensland Cricket & possess outstanding cricket brains. Just my opinion.
