Tim Tszyu wants Australian title on path to Horn bout

By eddyboi / Roar Rookie

Son of legendary boxer Kostya Tszyu, Tim, is certainly making his own waves in the Australian boxing world.

The current interim WBA Oceania super-welterweight champion is looking to conquer the Australian ranks then pursue a fight with former WBO welterweight champ Jeff Horn.

Tszyu is fighting in Sydney on May 15 against Joel Camilleri for the Australian light-middleweight title.

If Tszyu is successful, he will join the ranks of Aussie greats Ryan and Guy Waters, Kevin Kelly and Nader Hamdan.

This will be Camilleri’s first defence of his newly won title that he earned back in February.

Camilleri‘s record is 17-5-1, and he could have the experience on his side to cause a upset.

Former NRL star Justin Hodges, who had his debut on the Paul Gallen vs John Hopoate card earlier this year, will feature on the undercard.

Tszyu is currently undefeated with a record of 12-0 and is looking to conquer Camilleri then have a fight with fellow Aussie Michael Zerafa – who just went the distance with British former IBF welterweight champ Kell Brook – before challenging Horn.

In response to the challenge from Tszyu, Horn spoke to The Daily Telegraph.

“It’s all good to call me out, but I don’t think they are as keen as they say,” Horn said.

“Tim will get better in time but I feel as soon as he faces someone half decent as a boxer he will have trouble.

“He is so straight down the line that he doesn’t have much when it comes to angles.

“Hopefully he does well in his career because he’s a nice kid but if he wants to fight me, let’s go.”

Tszyu is used to calling out former world champions.

Last year he took to the internet to call out veteran Anthony Mundine in the hope of using their names to promote an inter-generational fight between the pair, but Mundine fought Horn instead and was crushed in 96 seconds.

Tszyu has said that he wants to come out of the shadows of his father’s reputation and this is the path he is taking.

Well Tszyu has notched up another win is his career and moves to 14-0. Rtichie didn't make it easy for Tszyu though and he really had to work for it. With the win Tszyu makes into the top ten rankiings for the WBO and IBF. But he aint going to get a world title shot anytiime soon. Personally I think that he needs to fight Dennis Hogan who is ranked third with the WBO and is recently coming off a somwhat controversional loss to WBO Super-welterweight champ Jaime Munguia. Tszyu is now ranked 9th with the IBF but is unlikely to get the attention of champ Julian Williams, who is also he IBO and WBA champ and would have many challengers at his heels and Tszyu would not even be on the radar.

its certainly interesting what's happening in Aussie boxing of late. Tszyu is going to fight Dwight Ritchie on the 14th August for his Aussie Super-welterweight title I beleive, Jeff Horn is going to fight Michael Zerefa on August 30 in Bendigo for the right to fight the winner of Brant v Murata that is happening on the 12th of July so next week. And if Justin Hodges has the gumpion, he'll fight me on the undercard of either the Horn or Tszyu fights.

Well Tim Tszyu defeated Aussie champ Joel Camilleri in a unanimous decision victory. Although Camerilli did not make it easy for a Tszyu, Tszyu stalked and counted his opponent most of the night in a fight not that far separated from Mundine v Soliman 3 a very upright fighter v a awkward stick and move fighter. Tszyu will most and hopefully fight Michael Zerafa as he is coming off a victory over Les Sherrington just last month and he talked about a Tszyu fight. Defending his Aussie and WBA Oceania Super-Welterweight titles should be next for Tszyu and Zerafa would be another great test for Tszyu

Young Tim Tszyu has his first real test next week when he fights, Camerilli next week. Should be interesting to see whether he can get the job done or not. this will be a one time thing for Tszyu, if he does not get the job done next Wednesday, you came pretty much right off his ppv career. Tszyu is cursed with the shadow of his father's reputation and it's going to take a more impressive career to come out of that shadow.

I think you speak of Glen Kelly, not "Kevin", in this context. Kevin Kelley was a yank. Camilleri will give Tim some good rounds; although I think Tim will win well. I concur with Horn's assessment of Tim. While he does have good power at the domestic level. I don't see him troubling many world class fighters.
