Magpies star Adams faces month on sidelines

By News / Wire

Collingwood midfielder Taylor Adams’ groin injury is worse than initially thought and will leave him on the AFL sidelines for about a month.

Adams suffered what the club described as a left adductor strain during Friday night’s win over Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium.

It was initially thought the 25-year-old would be out for a fortnight but scans have since revealed tendon damage in his groin.

“It’s probably worse than we first thought,” Adams told Fox Sports.

“We first thought it was muscle. It’s not muscle, it’s tendon so that’s obviously not a great sign.

“I imagine I’ll miss at least a couple of weeks and probably pushing closer to four or so.”

The Pies sit second on the ladder and should bank further points in games against Carlton, St Kilda, Sydney and Fremantle over the next month.

Adams’ injury timeline means he could potentially return for the Queen’s Birthday clash with Melbourne before the Magpies’ bye in round 12.

The hard-nosed midfielder also missed the Pies’ first two games with a tendon injury in his finger.

“Obviously my finger and now this, it’s frustrating but it is what it is,” Adams said.

Essendon wingman Andrew McGrath (knee) and North Melbourne backman Luke McDonald (groin) both had scans on Monday.

A five-day turnaround between the Bombers’ loss to Geelong and Friday night’s clash with Sydney at the SCG could test McGrath’s recovery.

The Kangaroos host Geelong at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

Both Josh Kelly (groin) and Phil Davis (ankle) face fitness tests for Greater Western Sydney, who take on Hawthorn at the MCG.

Ruckman Tom Hickey (hamstring) could return for premiers West Coast against his old side St Kilda.

Largely agree. Completely forgot about Scharenberg. Appleby and Murphy have been good when fit in the 2's as well. Along with Quaynor, the backline has more than enough depth

Sorry AJ I didn’t mean Sier straight in this week. Adams is out for 4 so I meant over the next few weeks. If anything, Bucks has shown a like for like philosophy this year so would not be surprised at all for Rupert Wills to come in for Tay this week. My best Pies side: B: Langdon, Roughead, Maynard HB: Crisp, Moore, Howe C: Mayne, Adams, Sidebottom HF: Hoskin-Elliott, Mihocek, Elliott F: Stephenson, Cox, De Goey Foll: Grundy, Pendlebury, Treloar Int: Phillips, Wells, Beams, Sier Emerg: (from) Aish, Thomas, Varcoe, Scharenberg, Greenwood, Reid, Wills, C Brown, Quaynor. Likely exits end of year: Daicos, Crocker, Wells, Goldsack, Greenwood, Varcoe

Is Brayden Sier fit? He hasn't played much in the VFL this season, and the VFL team didn't play on the weekend so we can't be sure as to whether he'd be selected. Personally, from the team on the weekend, I'd have in out best 22 Cox, Mayne and Sier in for Reid, Greenwood and Brown. Wells probably is in there too, but I'm not sure who to take out (maybe Sier?). My best 22 is probably harsh on Aish, Brown and Varcoe, but I just can't see them ahead of anyone already in the team. Fantastic depth to have though, as injuries will occur. Greenwood only fits in if he plays as a tagger (although he did play alright against Port). I wasn't as impressed with Reid as much as others were. He did kick 1-4, and doesn't seem to have 50m kicks in him anymore, which may be a consequence of frequent injuries. Cox also gives extra assistance in the ruck.

A shame for our best inside mid but he should be cherry ripe for the finals. This is the opportunity for Brayden Sier to stake his claim for an inside mid place. Chris Mayne and James Aish are due to return soon and Daniel Wells keeps knocking on the door too. Meanwhile, Ben Reid played really well and Cox needs to come back. Does Brody Mihocek miss this week?
