Would you rather be a Spurs or United fan at the moment?

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are two of the most underperforming teams in the world at the moment.

They are both going through a crisis, and their fans are demanding some form of change. But who would you rather be: a Spurs fan or United fan?

First of all, Tottenham. After making it into the Champions League final last year and coming fourth in the Premier League, only one point behind third-placed Chelsea, the fans were labelling this as the year that they could finally have some silverware to celebrate.

But so far, that isn’t looking likely. They currently sit ninth in the Premier League on a measly 11 points from eight games, and sit third in their Champions League group, on one point from two games, and with a goal difference of -5.

They have had arguably the worst week out of any team in Europe, losing to Bayern Munich in the Champions League 7-2, before losing to Brighton and Hove Albion 3-0. And as if this wasn’t bad enough, they have also lost their captain and first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris due to a dislocated elbow.

I watched the first half of their game against Brighton, and after they conceded the first goal in the third minute, they looked completely down and out. While Hugo Lloris was being treated on the field, I noticed that no one was going up to another player and calling for everyone to keep their heads up. They all just looked distraught, and it looked that from the third minute onwards, there was no way that they were going to win that game. That is the worrying thing about Tottenham at the moment.

But what about Manchester United? They certainly aren’t going any better.

Throughout the season, it has been inconsistent performance after inconsistent performance. I would struggle to say this in one breath, but the lowlights have been losing to Crystal Palace, drawing with Southampton, losing to West Ham, drawing with AZ Alkmaar and losing to Newcastle. And this has been in under two months after beating Chelsea 4-0.

The same thing that happened to Tottenham after conceding against Brighton happened to Manchester United after the 1-0 loss against relegation favourites Newcastle. As a Manchester United fan, losing to Newcastle is entering a new territory of worry.

Manchester United are now two points away from the relegation zone, sitting awkwardly in 12th place. The excuse of it still being the start of the season is long gone. It has now been eight games and United have only registered nine points, the equivalent of three wins. Forget the Champions League – do United have a relegation battle on their hands?

For Manchester United, their struggles have been going on ever since Sir Alex Ferguson announced his departure and retirement in 2013.

However, Tottenham looked like a club that was only improving, and this season has been nothing more than a disappointment considering there have been no major changes throughout the transfer window in terms of players leaving. They made some really good signings and were one of the teams that should have benefited from a great transfer window.

Tottenham, United and fans of any other team, pretend to be neutral for a second and answer this: would you rather be a Tottenham or United fan at the moment?
