Robbie Fowler miffed as Roar languish in last place

Frustrations are growing for Brisbane coach Robbie Fowler with the Roar sitting equal last on the A-League ladder.

Under pressure Brisbane Roar coach Robbie Fowler is feeling the frustrations of his team’s difficulties in hitting the target following their 1-1 draw with Newcastle.

Roar remain the only team this A-League season yet to score a first-half goal and have just two wins to sit equal last with the Jets.

The Liverpool legend has been under the pump in recent weeks as results have soured, but he urged fans to be patient after salvaging a draw with a late goal at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday.

“You’ve got to remember, we’re a brand new team. We’ve got a load of lads who have come into the squad, into the set up and into the team,” Fowler said.

“For what we are now from what we were last year, Brisbane Roar as a side, I think it’s chalk and cheese.

“We look as though we’re a handful, we look as though we can give all the teams a game. In terms of possession. We know the most important stat is the scoreline but we know we’re close.

“Of course it’s frustrating because we want to win the game, we will win games.”

Saturday’s draw follows a trend of Roar dominating possession and territory only to be left wanting up front.

They finished the match with 54 per cent possession and 58 per cent territory, but had just three shots on target for one goal – a Bradden Inman shot in the 87th minute.

However, the one point could also be attributed to Brisbane goalkeeper Jamie Young who pulled off two brilliant saves in the dying minutes.

One after he was down injured having copped a ball to the face, which will require stitches.

“He’s a good keeper. He’s come back into the side and his attitude has been first class,” Fowler said.

“We want all the lads to have the same attitude.

“That’s a testament to the lad when he’s pulling off saves like that when we could have had a foul. It’s a game we felt we could have got more out of.”

the roar are a work in progress, this year was always going to be painful. I've got a feeling next year might be as well with the amount of dead wood in the team. If fowler gets a third year, thats when some success might come. footballs like that though, it goes in cycles. Brissy will be back

Robbie is also right with the unevenness of the fixture list. Note the bottom three sides have all had two byes whereas Western United and Victory have not had one bye yet? A manufactured draw will always give you uneven results but surely halfway through the 26 game season it should not be this disjointed. Next season with twelve teams it must surely switch to a 33 game season which will be a real test of squad depths and also give more game time to the younger players trying to break into the teams.

The Roar need one top quality No 10 to come into the team. Perhaps in the January window he can go into the transfer market and get one from Europe. He won't find one in Australia that will be in the high enough quality to do the job. Please find another young Broich.

Again we have the misleading statistics of possession with the Brisbane Roar. As it is done today possession is calculated by the number of passes of a team as a percentage of the total number of passes in a game. Very deceiving as results indicate. I suggested many times by means of comments and emails to both printed and visual media that, at least in the case of the Brisbane Roar, possession should be calculated in terms of net possession. For example: the Roar pass the ball six times and then they either lose the ball to an opponent or they kick it long and out or bounds. That should be counted as minus six passes. The reason is obvious the result is the same as if they give away in the first pass. In other words they wasted six passes. I did this in the game against Newcastle, I could not keep up as I was with friend and distracted. However at one stage I had minus 35 passes against the Roar. Obviously counting like that will give a better indication of real attacking possession. The same applies if possession is counted in terms of time. I think this is the way to calculate possession in terms of positive results. Examples of positive results, favourable decisions, free kicks, corner kicks, GOALS, these would indicate plus passes, the rest minus passes. Anyway, unfortunately they have a tough road ahead until they get it together. Robbie is right it is brand new lot of guys playing together in a competition that is getting tougher every year. Good luck Brisbane Roar we know you are trying hard.
