The future of the Premier League season is up in the air after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta became the latest sporting figure to test positive for Covid-19.

The club reported on Friday that Arteta, 37, had taken the test after “feeling poorly” for a number of days.

Arsenal players and staff who had been in recent contact with Arteta, a group which includes the club’s full Premier League squad and coaching staff, will now have to self-isolate.

“Mikel and the full first-team squad, players and staff, will be fully supported,” the club’s head of football, Raul Sanllehi, said in a statement.

“We look forward to getting back to training and playing as soon as medical advice allows.

“Obviously Mikel’s full recovery is the priority now for us all.”

The Premier League will convene an emergency meeting at the club on Saturday to determine whether upcoming games need to be cancelled.
