Springboks make long-term commitment to the Rugby Championship

By Melissa Woods / Wire

World champions South Africa have committed to the Rugby Championship in a massive boost for the four-team competition.

There were fears the Springboks, who aren’t participating in this year’s tournament due to the affects of COVID-19, would link up with northern hemisphere nations.

The tournament is currently being played in Australia but as a Tri-Nations involving Australia, New Zealand and Argentina.

However, SANZAAR announced on Wednesday South Africa were on board for 2021 and beyond.

The championship will be restructured to include a 12-match format with teams playing each other on a home and away basis.

In 2019, when the competition was won by South Africa, teams only played each other once with the tournament shortened due to the World Cup.

SANZAAR boss Andy Marinos said more announcements would be forthcoming as more plans fell into place.

“This is the first of a number of announcements that will be made over the coming weeks and months as we continue to plan into 2021 and beyond,” he said.

“The disruption during 2020 has been significant, however, despite the numerous setbacks and the inherent complexity of our vast geographical expanse, we have managed to keep the game alive and look forward to the remainder of the revised Tri-Nations to bring the curtain down on the 2020 season.”

hey jacko. at that point they lacked it. maybe now they may be fit. for 400mins, you needat least 5 rounds of super rugby

yep they lack cohesion and fitness……yet I watch them playing every weekend just like I watched NZA and SRAU when that was on……Show me where Arg was super fit and had great cohesion when they arrived…..Now thats a Union with balls……SARU are nothing but sooks….Even the Boks captain came out and said his players were fit and raring to go so I guess you say he is a liar? Half the squad has been playing in England…all fit and cohesive…..If your Rugby bosses had a set they would be here now playing Arg tonight in Brisbane as a double header but they are at home crying in the corner……..Boks or bambi? Which is it? The springbambies….love it!

haha I remember those years well.....I remember the baby ABs doing pretty good too...All without SA..... 87 not important? So I guess SAs win in 95 wasnt important....Their first.....Aus in 91...their first......England in 2003...Their first... Why would I expect anything different from you as I guess to you all NZ wins are devalued and everyone's wins against NZ are top of your valuation tree.....Such is your bias...

Sadly it seems we are going to the Pro16

I think some are just looking for an avenue to vent their frustration and anger, the SARU at this point seems easy to point fingers at. Whether rationale or not.

is there is dislike function mate? because this comment is not true. They dont have the fitness and cohesion. under normal cohesion players would be released but these are dangerous times with the pandemic. Safety first and all else next.

i seem to remember NZ being at the top when SA was exciled I seem to remember that the NZ Cavaliers got their buts kicked and the AB's crashing out of the WC semi 1991. All they got was a Mickey Mouse WC-title at home in 1987 (did any other nation take that WC seriously?).

Spot on. It insane that pretty much everyone seems to miss that SARU has not committed to anything yet.

If that docu-series is old abroad it is the company producing it that will cash in. Maybe SARU has a small share in that, but it will not be even close to what they make from one Test match.

Well Corne, if you read the carefully worded statement from SARU you will see they have not committed to the RC until 2030. Quite remarkable that so few Roarers have noticed this.

yet another F up by SARU...Players all over the world rather than in SA.....And people say the ABs should select from OS...NEVER

2020-11-06T08:23:27+00:00

Under normal circumstances yes, this isn’t normal circumstances. Some in Japan, some in the UK, some in SA, three different scenarios. I suppose it should be a singe, eh?

2020-11-06T07:39:43+00:00

I reckon Fitness, team cohesion and team training are things that can be pretty easy to organise Corne. I thought he had some info about something difficult!
