Dream XV 2020: Back three of the year

By Pundit / Roar Guru

The back three is a place where pace and agility are mixed with the ability to claim the high ball. It is a place which fizzles with electricity, and the speed of players combines with the skill of playmakers around them to score.

So, who were the back three players who shone the brightest in 2020?

11. Caleb Clarke
Caleb Clarke really tears through defenders. He did this multiple times against the Wallabies and the Argentineans made sure to shut him down.

Established as the heir to Jonah Lomu, or whatever cliché is associated with the All Black 11 jersey, Clarke was in great form this year and he was stepping like a madman.

14. Cheslin Kolbe
One of the most iconic moments in rugby history is Cheslin Kolbe’s individual try in the World Cup final, outpacing Joe Marler, stepping Owen Farrell, and running past three English forwards to score the try that had Francois Piennar punching the air.

It only takes one yard for him to create a try-scoring chance. For Toulouse, he has been phenomenal. Simply brilliant.

I cannot get past how he pulled off impossible sidesteps so gloriously, as well as converting almost every opportunity. He is extremely agile, perhaps the best stepper on the planet.

Meanwhile, he has the pace to back it up. Though he is small, he is extremely skilled with passing and kicking to link up the play. His tackling is solid, allowing him to take down many bigger men.

He is so excellent that I have to put him here, even though he has not played any Tests this year.

15. Beauden Barrett
A true footballer and extremely skilled fullback, Barrett is a flyhalf with the positioning and pace of a fullback – a perfect hybrid.

Barret had many forays with the ball in hand this year and was creative in attack, as well as strong in defence.

Sadly, the All Blacks did not really provide him and Richie Mo’unga with good ball to attack as much as he could. All the same, he’s a strong strike runner and a skilful player with a distributing arsenal.

Honourable mentions
Stuart Hogg had us in doubt after two mediocre games against Ireland and England, but he struck back with brilliance against France and Italy, and a solid Autumn Nations Cup. A highly skilled player who can slice through defences through footwork, he creates many opportunities.

Leigh Halfpenny had maintained his reputation of being a rock in the air and a brave defender. He took down a much heavier Kyle Sinckler to save a try, mind you. A man renowned for defensive positioning, he is a strong distributor with good passing and decent pace.

Damien Penaud is the most intelligent wing in rugby, great at making defensive reads and also a good passer and kicker of the ball. On top of that, he has the vision to open space for those around him.

Kotaro Matsushima lived up to my prophecy and rubber-stamped world-class all over his Clermont jersey. He has strong defence despite his diminutive stature, excellent ball-handling, and possesses brilliant pace and agility.

Nemani Nadolo played classy rugby against Georgia with a hat-trick after his great form for Montpellier this year.

Also, Semi Radradra was the man creating Nadolo’s opportunities. He was simply excellent for Bristol and Fiji as a wide-channel threat and playmaker at 13. He can play anywhere in the midfield and the back three, which puts him in contention.

Aphelele Fassi is a playmaking strike runner who has great hands, impressive passing under pressure, a good grubber kick, and amazing pace and footwork – a natural playmaking 15.

Warrick Gelant is a wide channel threat with the ability to fix more than one player in the wide areas, while Makazole Mapimpi and Sbu Nkosi were both struck down with injury but are world-class wingers.

Anthony Watson is fast, aggressive, powerful and guileful. He was injured at the start of the Six Nations, which was a shame, but is defensively intelligent, able to push things out to the touchline, and use an aggressive drift to cut off overlaps.

Marika Koroibete played with power in this year’s Tri Nations. Pacey and powerful, he is very good in physical confrontations.

Jordan Lamour and Keith Earls served as playmaking 15s, impressive for Ireland on occasions, while James Lowe was excellent in contesting Stockdale for that 11 jersey.

Yes in big games like a final they will pick their A team. Over the last few years, Leinster have been fielding around 50 players per season. The have a great academy and pathways.

In reality Leinster play two teams because of international commitments, the European cup, and restrictions on how much game time the centrally contracted Ireland players can put in. So if to watch the European cup you're getting the A team of sorts and then in much of the Pro14 Harry Byrne and Ciaran Frawley are their 10/12 in there more recent Pro14 games. It's a different approach to SR, much more of a focus on player workload management and talent development

Leinster having being playing a dual pivot with Ciaran Frawley at 12 and Harry Byrne (Ross Byrne's younger and probably more talented brother) at 10. Leinster when on song run brilliant attacking plays...

Sorry i dont watch much irish rugby, but im sure they could try to blood new 10s with a dual pivot and conway/earls at 15. Conway stepped in at first receiver at points in the 6N

Hey Pundit, late again! Conway has played a bit at full back in the past but with Mike Haley playing FB at Munster he's been picked on the wing only. Seemed a bit out of sorts in the ANC, perhaps lacked match fitness or may the ball just didn't come his way. Great player, I think Leinster must wish they hadn't let him go..

Thank Pundit, I'm a bit late to the game here! I did a similar team of the year exercise (neither as good or as detailed as yours) and I got a bit of flack about choosing players on SR and Heineken Cup form which I see has appeared again here. I think people need to acknowledge that this has been a strange year in rugby, Fiji played one test, the Boks played none, Japan played none as so on. Test rugby wasn't great this year either with lots of poor games in the ANC, the Wallabies struggling to win and even the mighty All Blacks really only at their best in two games. If you on go on test form only then you have to leave out Kolbe and Radradra, which is a travesty to mind. I personally think Jordie is a better full back than Beauden, but it might need a pub and a few beers to settle that debate

Instead of calling it the back 3 of 2020, call it who would you pick in your team right now? In that vein, you pick 11. Kolbe 14. Kolbe 15. Kolbe

9 Smith 10 BB 11 Clark 12 ALB 13 Ioane 14 bridge 15 Jordan 22 JB ( why have a specialist 10 on the bench when BB plays 80 ) 23 Dmac

The backline didnt just fail this year...It was average for the talent we had at the WC and all of 2019...The loss to Aus and then the win a week later is very Mounga .....Flawed genius......Can do the impossible one day and cant do the basics corectly the next.....You cant blame Foster for 2019 and as for blaming Dmac.BB well that combo was very good in 2018 so its very clearly the introduction of Mounga into the starting 10 role that has changed the success of the backs....Why do you think Mounga was not an AB until he was 24 where guys like Dmac etc were ABs before him yet are younger? mounga has always shown potential but has never quite fulfilled it...And never will...And he went into this season with a Winning record of 67% as a starting AB...He then won 2 from 5 starts at 10 so that only makes his winning percentage worse now and thats not an acceptable win % from a starting 10 for the ABs......Whether you can prove or disprove any of that or all of that is Mounga's fault is a different story but the simple facts are that since Mounga became the regular starter ( 2019 ) the Abs have had a terrible run and the backs have not functioned as they previously had.....i say thats not coincidence.....

He is QC but with common sense. Why i believe the ABs backline is inconsistent? No world-class 12 and a mere distributor in Goodhue, ALB not in the right position, or if he is he does not have the right midfield partner, no wide channel threat cos they removed Ben Smith from fullback and brought in BB/Dmac, and also less innovation from Foster. Mo'unga has potential and performance.

2020-12-24T08:34:26+00:00

Mounga makes to many decisions which are all about Mounga.....He is a similar player to QC and Carlos S...They have genius in their game but it also leads to inconsistancies and it leads to a inconsistant functioning backline at times... Pundit why do you believe the ABs backline has become so up and down in the last 2 years? The difference is Mounga but happy to have you point out other reasons...

 It's Mounga-Dmac. Foster is trying to have his Mounga cake and eat his Barrett cake. Inconsistenceis and mistakes-i watched full games mind you, and i dont see him dropping the ball often. a missed linekick or two but still
