Highlanders add to Chiefs' horror streak

By News / Wire

Winger Jona Nareki scored three tries and created another as the Highlanders rallied from 20-6 down to beat the Chiefs 39-23 in Super Rugby Aotearoa.

The Chiefs, who couldn’t win a match in 2020, looked set after a first-round bye to open their 2021 season with a win when they controlled the first half and led 20-11 at halftime.

But the Highlanders scored four second-half tries to wrest the match away the Chiefs and to post their first win of the season after an opening-round loss.

After scrumhalf Folau Fakatava dashed through an inside gap to score in the 50th minute, making the score 20-18, Nareki completed his double and created a try for Shannon Frizell to take the Highlanders to a 32-20 lead.

The Chiefs nibbled at the lead with a penalty before Nareki dived in at the corner in the 69th minute to clinch the match with his hat-trick try.

“I thought we played better with 14 men on the field than in the first half,” said captain Ash Dixon, who was one of two Highlanders players sin-binned before halftime.

“That first half our discipline was pretty poor and we were playing at the wrong end of the park.

“But I’m really proud of our second-half effort. I think we learned a lot from last week.”

The Chiefs went 0-8 under British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland coach last year in the inaugural season of the five-team New Zealand domestic competition.

Under caretaker coach Clayton McMillan and with Gatland’s son Bryn calling the shots at five-eighth, the Chiefs looked more formidable in the first half on Friday, controlling possession and forcing errors of discipline from the Highlanders.

Warren Gatland has stepped aside this season because of his involvement later in the year with the Lions’ scheduled tour to South Africa.

The Highlanders were heavily penalised in the first half, mainly for careless breaches at the offside line. That cost them two players consecutively to the sin bin, including Dixon.

The Chiefs scored tries through flanker Luke Jacobson and fullback Damian McKenzie – both from attacking scrums – while the Highlanders were a man short.

But the Highlanders also scored a try through Nareki during that period, which launched their comeback. Nareki pounced on the ball when a kick from Gatland was partially charged down and ran 90 metres to score.

After Fakatava’s try, Nareki fielded another loose kick just outside his 22 and beat three tacklers before passing to Frizell, who scored. He scored again himself in the 57th minute, giving the Highlanders a 32-20 lead with three tries in a period of seven minutes.

yep pretty frustrating from Gatland...Bloody Gatlands.....Cant they just not have anything to do with the Chiefs!!!   I saw some great Chiefs play so not too down about it but it doesnt get easier in this comp so a tough season ahead again..... Hated the ref....Not biased, just incompetent.....Is this where rugby is going? I hope its not like last year where the Kiwi refs go penalty crazy during the SRA but then dont continue it......Either make the offside a permanent thing or abandon it now....Its been 40 years since I was so unsure of what the whistle was blown for......And yet again I see them rule sometimes and not others.......GRRRRRR...

We did it twice against them last year so it was no great surprise!

Why would you chip kick 10 out when you are up against 14 men Bad call from Gatland, very lucky bounce for us But enter A Smith and what a difference Chiefs looked scary for that first 30

Yeah, so strange to see them fall apart after playing so good for 30 minutes (and being pretty close to put the match to bed too).

We looked a million dollars for most of the first half. Then one try from a lucky ricochet and we fall apart. That Nareki looks quite the player though. Hopefully he keeps on playing like that.

Didn’t expect that, especially after half time. Chiefs seem to lack cohesion and leadership to keep them on the boil. Some poor tackling in the 2nd half especially first up tackles

Just watching the replay- first minute Cane gets over the ball and lifts it and wins a penalty for ‘holding on’. The replay clearly shows the tackler had released the ball - there were no hands on the ball. The commentators applaud the referee’s decisions and great work of Cane. To me this is a classic case of the cognitive dissonance you get in all sports. The rugby league example would be the way they systematically ignore head high tackles.
