South Sydney have made Australian rugby league history, becoming the only first-grade team in the history of the code to score 30 or more points in eight straight games as they thrashed Gold Coast.
The high-flying Rabbitohs made it 10 NRL wins in a row as they romped to a 36-6 victory over the Titans at Cbus Super Stadium.
It’s the first time since the inaugural NSW Rugby League season in 1908 that a team has topped 30 points in eight straight matches.
The victory also keeps Souths firmly in the hunt for a top-two finish, level with Penrith ahead of a blockbuster clash with the Panthers on Friday.
Souths halves Adam Reynolds and Cody Walker were at their scintillating best, Reynolds scoring 16 points including a try while Walker’s three try assists means he now has 34 for the season.
Tim Smith’s 40 try assists for Parramatta in 2005 remains the highest mark by one player in a single campaign, but is surely under threat from Walker with three matches to play.
Braidon Burns, added to the team after Dane Gagai (hamstring) was ruled out on Friday, scored a double with winger Josh Mansour also claiming a pair of tries in the rampant win.
Latrell Mitchell also found the scoreboard and it was his barrelling run and flick pass which allowed Mansour to complete the scoring in the 76th minute.
The Rabbitohs fullback, who now has 10 tries for the season, finished the game with seven tackle busts, a try assist and 174 run metres including 33 post-contact metres.
Titans’ wrecking ball David Fifita, starting from the bench for a fourth-straight game, nearly scored his fourth try of the season against Souths in the 55th minute but stumbled as he charged to the line and lost the ball when a desperate Mitchell slid in to tackle him.
Gold Coast did finally get on the board in the 66th minute when Corey Thompson got over after a slick backline move but that was all Titans’ fans had to cheer as their three-match winning run came to a shuddering halt.
The seventh-placed Titans’ quest for a first finals appearance in five seasons remains up in the air, particularly with a clash against table-topping Melbourne to come next week.
Gold Coast also had front-rower Jaimin Jolliffe placed on report in the second half to compound coach Justin Holbrook’s woes.

Panthers 27 straight regular season wins in the context of history of the game was pretty big too. Storm may equal 19, all time consecutive wins v Titans this week, also pretty big.
