Dragons forward Jaydn Su’A is facing a suspension after being charged with a Grade 2 careless high tackle on Dale Finucane during his side’s defeat to Cronulla in Round 3.

Su’A was binned for the incident and put on report. He will sit out one match if he accepts the early guilty plea and could face a two game suspension should be decide to contest the charge at the judiciary.

Emerging Gold Coast winger Treymain Spry has been cleared of any wrongdoing after an off-field incident left him badly injured on the eve of the NRL season.

The 22-year-old, who has played five NRL games, scored twice in their pre-season draw with Brisbane last month as he looked to work his way into coach Justin Holbrook’s top squad.

News Corp reported on Thursday night that Spry suffered a fractured skull, a broken eye socket and bleeding on the brain in the incident in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley a fortnight ago. His immediate playing future is under a cloud and he will need to make a full recovery before he will be cleared to return to the field.

The Gold Coast club issued a statement saying: “As per media reports, the Gold Coast Titans can confirm Treymain Spry is recovering from an off-field incident.

“Treymain has been cleared of any wrongdoing by Queensland Police and the NRL Integrity Unit.

“As the matter is now before the courts, the club will make no further comment at this stage.”

Queensland Police said a man had been charged in connection with the incident and was due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on April 11.

Hynes gets Thurston’s tick of approval

Nicho Hynes has made a strong case to be buy of the year with his form in the first three rounds and legendary halfback Johnathan Thurston admitted he didn’t think the former Melbourne utility would make this much impact as a playmaker at Cronulla.

Hynes was superb in the Sharks’ clinical 36-12 victory over St George Illawarra in Wollongong on Thursday night, scoring a try, landing six goals and setting up a slick attack despite the horrendous handling conditions.

“(Five-eighth) Matty Moylan and Nicho Hynes were on fire, especially Nicho’s kicking game,” Thurston said on Nine commentary.

“To tell the truth, I didn’t actually see this coming from Nicho. I always knew he was a good footballer but to play in the halves, especially halfback, you need to get your team around the park, you need to know when to kick, how to get your team back in the game when you’re behind by points but he’s started on fire.

“This team reminds me of their coach, how he played the game. Just unrelenting, just fit, going hard and non stop.”

Forx League analyst Matty Johns also made the comparison that Cronulla were starting to adopt the character traits of Fitzgibbon from his playing days with the Roosters, NSW and Australia.

While he was full of praise for the Sharks in the wet, Thurston said the home side lacked commitment: “There was just no resolve with the Dragons’ defence.”

Yeah I did a double take on that as well. Who stops a Fijian road train one on one without WMDs?

A nod to Tracy as well. He hit Ravalawa 1-1 and put him out in a try scoring situation. Rava has run over blokes twice his size.

Yeah Talakai is a massive presence who takes a lot of attention away from Hynes and doesn't he love it. I rate the Sharkies backline too, Kennedy is a freak, Ramien is showing what he can do and Moylan looks like he's found religion not having to carry the attack. Watch Nikora, he's a Rolls Royce in skills dressed up as a Kenworth. Up, up Cronulla!

It certainly was impressive by Hynes. Mind you he didn't do it by himself. Talakai, IMO, was up there with the best on the ground. Finucane done what he does which is high praise when that standard is expected. Even McInnes, I didn't notice him on the ground until one time Brailey played the ball and this #15 rifled the ball off the ground 15m onto the receivers chest. Then goes on to make 33 tackles! That's a luxury. For the Saints I think their biggest fears were exposed, too many rookies in key positions and older guys. Hunt tried his heart out. It looked like Laurie wanted to inject himself physically but that could be frustration as well. Ramsay and Suli are a defensive weak point. I still reckon Suli would be a better winger and put Bird inside him to talk to him in defence.
