Alex Sexton at the crossroads

By Thom Roker / Roar Guru

Alex Sexton has played 158 games for the Gold Coast Suns, plus a healthy number of NEAFL/VFL games, but having spent four months in the reserves, the vultures are circling ahead of the two-week void of AFL footy content.

When the GC17 licence was awarded and the state of Queensland divided up into Lions and Suns zones by local government areas, a teenage Alex Sexton knew he could be headed to the fledgling club in his draft year.

Fast forward to 2022 and he is the fourth-longest tenured player at the club, with the third-most games in Suns colours amongst currently listed players, plus the second-most goals for the Gold Coast over an 11-year period in which they collectively scored the least number of majors.

Technically a small forward, Sexton plays above his height, scoring at a touch under a goal a game, although he played a lot of footy early doors further upfield.

The Redlands product, from a region between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, is a well-loved leader at the club by staff and fans alike, but it is his leadership among the players that has become his trademark.

In season 2022, his 11th since being drafted in 2011, Secco played just the four senior games after a pre-season disrupted by surgery caught up with him, leading to a long and frustrating road back through the VFL.

Six goals on return to the senior side, after 27 majors in 13 games for the finals-bound VFL side, showed that there is plenty of life left in the old dog (who is still shy of his 29th birthday).

The beauty of Sexton’s talent is that he is clutch in the moment, whether it’s a mark and bomb for goal outside the fifty or an unlikely snap in congestion.

Put simply, he has carried the team at times, personifying the team’s locker room motto “be a Sherpa”.

At his best, he contributes a couple of goals a game through his own shots and goal assists, which the coaches will take any day.

The question isn’t whether he has lost it because he has just proven he still has it, but whether he can continue to produce his best when the team needs him.

Along with Sam Day and Rory Thompson, Sexton knows that his spot is no longer secure in the best 22, yet like his foundation teammates he is determined to continue to push standards and help the club in whatever way he can.

He has been a leader amongst players in the push for retention and has a contract for 2023, so he won’t have to sell his soul for another crack at the big time.

His season isn’t over either, with an elimination final in the VFL at home against the Box Hill Hawks next week and a chance to lead his young teammates to further success.

Sources close to Secco say he was lucky to even get on the field for the start of the season and the club’s maturity policy appears to have given him a few games as an incumbent to prove he was back on track.

Unfortunately, it didn’t pan out that way, with fitness and form keeping him in the reserves as younger teammates went past him, only for injuries to gift him a final chance to add to his impressive resume.

He isn’t going to be traded or delisted. Alex Sexton means too much to the club for that to even be considered.

The man himself has said he’ll keep playing VFL if that’s what the club wants him to do as long as he can help them to succeed.

Going on his performance against North Melbourne, he is in fairly select company to kick a bag of six this year and no doubt he’ll be reminding everyone that “Sixton” still has cache.

He started a Sun and he’ll remain a Sun, no matter what observers desperate for a headline have to say about it.

The thing about these contracts is that the incumbent club can offer low with incentives while the competing club has to over bid. $650k plus incentives might well win out. It isn’t a great deal different to $4 mill over 5 years, but then again the guarantee has to be inviting. Put simply, the Suns are on the up and up, while the Crows are going to lose their best players soon. If Izak chases the $ he misses out on what the Suns are on the verge of.

Sexton is under contract for 2023. Wouldn’t be surprised if he extended before next season.

Charlie Constable had a similar season to Secco. Came in injured, had bouts of Covid (I chose not to write about that deliberately) and eventually made it into to the senior side for the last game. Incidentally, CC had 4 disposals and 2 marks in 9 minutes, but he will start in the middle for the twos in the finals and make the most of a season playing himself into form.

Touk has had a lot of 3 vote games. I think the warm favourites all have a teammate taking votes off them like Oliver/ Petracca, Neale/ McCluggage, Cripps/ Walsh. Won’t be 4 guys above 30 again. Should be a thriller. Unfortunately, maybe only a vote at best with Secco likely for 3 in the last game.

Thanks for the good article. I think it’s funny to have all the talk about him walking cos can’t get a game. Geelong has heaps of issues with good players in 2’s and get praise for their depth. Need players like Secco to hang tough and keep competing for the club to advance. Cheers

The Suns have not treated Sexton well. His last game before round 23 was in round 3. The Suns only have themselves to blame if Sexton walks.

Suns are very tight-lipped on the size or length of their offer. Crows offer seems to rely on the salary cap being expanded, which may well happen, but it is a risk since crowd numbers are still nowhere near what they were.

As I understand it the Suns are offering somewhere around 600-650 per season compared to Adelaide's $800. No doubt Adelaide's offer is front loaded too as an added sweetener. Over 4 years, that's quite a lot of money to say no to. Can't blame Rankine if he takes it.

Thats it man i think its more just the offer Adelaide have put up thats alot of money over 4 years for a guy that young, should set him up for life with the right people around him.

Good write up Thom. Not to rain on Secco's parade but NM this season have been a Secco's a bit of a tricky one. He's always had goals in him but he doesn't offer the same type of physical and pressure game that someone like Holman offers. And there's only so many spots to go around in the forward line. Chol, Casboult, Ainsworth, Rankine have cemented their spots this season and would only miss out due to injury. That leaves 2 spots and a myriad of talented players to chose from. When fit, Holman, Secco, Rosas, Jeffrey, Lukosious, MacPherson, Oea all offer differents skills and attributes. Not to mention King coming back from injury. Secco's a really good depth player for the Suns and if they're going to have a good season in 2023 they need players pushing for selection in the VFL and with proven capability in the AFL when called upon.

Secco has always had the potential, but the kind of delivery he is getting now is better than ever before.

I'm encouraged by the fact that it would take a monster salary to tempt Rankine away from the Suns. $800k is crazy money and we'd be well within his rights to take it and run. Having said that, I really hope he resigns with the Suns on a long-term deal.

There’s always one player you don’t want to lose. The past 2 years it has been Peter Wright and Will Brodie, who were both culled due to the salary cap squeeze from Covid. If it is Rankine that leaves this year I think the club will go for an A-Grader. The Suns are batting 15 deep with forwards. Chris Burgess just won the VFL goal kicking award, Josh Corbett and Secco have been kicking them for fun, while Ace, Darcy, Elijah Hollands and Sam Day have filled in at AFL level. Ben King might have to swing back into defence

Yeah, Dermott Brereton deathrides him something chronic. Others just copy Derm.

Good read Thom - thanks. It's always nice to have a guy in the fwd line who can put points on the board like Secco. There are only 6 or 7 spots there though. On Rankine, my sense is that he's not looking to get out, or 'go home' as such, but that the Crows offer is very enticing. If he goes, it won't feel like previous retention issues for the Suns; but more just a young guy making the best decision for himself.

If the crows are offering $800,000 a year for a small forward then the lure to return home will probably be something we can't compete with. And the alleged $800,000 a year would mess with our salary cap.

Love Secco. I don’t know that he and Holman fit in the same forward line, but maybe they work out another role for Nick.
