The Collingwood Magpies have shaken off a spell of bad form to record a dominant 69-point win over Gold Coast on Sunday.
Collingwood were superbly led by Adam Treloar, who finished with 35 touches and a goal. Jack Crisp and Steele Sidebottom were both also great, while Will Hoskin-Elliott bounded back into form with a four-goal effort up forward. Brodie Grundy, as one expects, was also excellent in the ruck.
Touk Miller led the Suns’ disposal count, while Anthony Miles and Brayden Fiorini were also impressive. I enjoyed the games of Ben King and Alex Sexton, who both booted three majors.
Final score
Collingwood Magpies 18.12.120
Gold Coast Suns 8.3.51
Sunday’s early game is being played at the MCG, as an injury-hit Collingwood host Gold Coast Suns. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 1:10pm (AEST).
A Sunday afternoon, late-season clash between Collingwood and the Gold Coast Suns never was forecast to be a game holding a lot of intrigue. In fact, even last month, this clash did not seem remarkable in many ways.
And yet, here we are – and it’s suddenly a clash that means a lot more than it should. Collingwood, facing falling out of the top four amid an injury crisis and some serious lack of form, needing to avoid dropping a game they should win. The Suns, too, needing a win – any win – to avoid closing out the season on seventeen straight losses.
The Pies last outing was at this ground, a brutally disappointing loss against the resurgent Tigers the result. The Suns, for their part, were super admirable – the best they’ve performed in yonks, really – in a close-run defeat against Essendon last Sunday.
These two sides haven’t played each other since the middle of last year, which resulted in a strong Collingwood win.
Every game they’ve played since 2015, actually, has resulted in a strong Collingwood win – perhaps contributing to the Suns’ status as warm underdogs.
Collingwood have made three changes for this clash. One is out of choice – Ben Crocker is omitted – while a duo has been forced out, Jordan De Goey and Isaac Quaynor. Levi Greenwood, Rupert Wills and, importantly, Taylor Adams all return to the outfit.
Gold Coast has opted to make four changes. Jack Hombsch is injured, whilst Jacob Heron, Jesse Joyce and Corey Ellis have all been omitted. Charlie Ballard, Jack Martin, Ben Ainsworth and Jack Bowes are all back in the side.
Prediction
Surely Collingwood ain’t going to drop this one. This is certainly a danger game, particularly with Collingwood’s injury crisis, but at the ‘G, I’ll back the Pies to win.

And there's full time. Collingwood win by 69 points. A comfortable victory for the under pressure Pies; not too bad a loss for the Suns, but still disappointing nevertheless. Collingwood: 18.12 (120) Gold Coast Suns: 8.3 (51)

Q4 '1 GOAL COLLINGWOOD There's ninety seconds left of this one, but a late goal off the boot of Hoskin-Elliott extends the margin just that little bit further. That's his fourth major of the afternoon. Collingwood: 18.11 (119) Gold Coast Suns: 8.3 (51)

Q4 '11 Credit where credit is due, the Suns have been pretty good at stemming Collingwood's high scoring in this term. Collingwood's just added the one goal thus far, and have conceded two, meaning they have not able to gain the added percentage they'd have been desiring. Collingwood: 17.9 (111) Gold Coast Suns: 8.3 (51)

Q4 '12 GOAL GOLD COAST A late rally at the minute for the Suns, as Sexton adds to their tally by a nice goal on the run from about 40 metres out. Real nice goal, upon viewing the replay. Collingwood: 17.9 (111) Gold Coast Suns: 8.3 (51)

Q4 '13 GOAL GOLD COAST A mistake in Collingwood's back line, as Roughead attempts a pass through to Crisp, which is expertly intercepted by Jack Martin. Jack Martin goes back and sends through the major. Collingwood: 17.9 (111) Gold Coast Suns: 7.3 (45)

Q4 '15 Not a whole lotta action happening at the minute, as we hit the quarter-way mark of the third term. The Suns have worked their way inside 50 a couple of times, but the Magpies are able to mop up the attacks and repel out into the midfield with ease. Collingwood: 17.9 (111) Gold Coast Suns: 6.3 (39)

Q4 '18 BEHIND COLLINGWOOD There's a free kick headed Treloar's way off the restart, and he'll spark a quick transition into attack. Hoskin-Elliott marks inside fifty, but his corresponding set shot misses. Collingwood: 17.9 (111) Gold Coast Suns: 6.3 (39)
