The GWS Giants have finally gotten their first win on the board in season 2019, knocking off the now 0-4 GWS Giants by nine points on Sunday.
Final score
Collingwood Magpies 4.3.27
GWS Giants 5.6.36
The Collingwood Magpies welcome the GWS Giants to Morwell Recreation Reserve this Sunday, with both sides looking for their first win for the 2019 AFLW season. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 2:05pm (AEDT).
Collingwood have not had the start to the new season they would have wanted. They currently are yet to win a game, which sees them at the bottom of the Conference B table.
The Magpies were awful away from home last week against the Fremantle Dockers. They were defeated by 33 points in the west, which no doubt would have rocked the confidence of the side as a whole.
The Magpies really did struggle to get their hands on the ball, with Sarah D’Arcy being the leading possession-getter for the black and white with 15 disposals.
Collingwood also were only able to find two majors, which came through Jaimee Lambert and D’Arcy, as they kicked one goal each.
The Giants are also having a season to forget, as they are yet to notch up a win in 2019, which sees them just above Collingwood on percentage in Conference B.
GWS did have a fantastic opportunity last week, however, to bring up their first win in 2019 as they faced the Carlton Blues at home.
Carlton have struggled in recent times in the AFLW competition, but they left the Giants stunned, claiming a 29-point victory on the road.
On a positive note for the Giants, Rebecca Beeson continued her solid form, reeling in 17 disposals. She has had no problem with finding the ball in the first three games of the 2019 season.
Christina Bernardi also had a good game down in the forward line kicking two majors.
Both sides this week will be desperate to get some points on the board, but one side is going to leave very disappointed and dejected.
Prediction
Both sides have been very poor in the opening first three games, and the fact neither side have a victory at this point of the season backs that statement up.
However, one side is going to leave Morwell with a victory, and I personally believe it will be the Giants.
They do appear to be a more rounded side than the Magpies, which will prove the difference come the end of the game.
The Giants to prevail by 11 points.

She’s played in the wind before, hasn’t she? That was a designed fade…

I don't know the geographic layout at Morwell - is there a funnel of wind moving across the center of the field there, or is it simply that midfield's as far as any defensive players can get the ball to travel before it flies wildly off to their left?

GOAL! 09:45' - Membrey wins a free directly in front of goal, and she converts from the set shot. A big goal for the Pies. Collingwood: 19 GWS: 36

But the Giants are doing something Collingwood refused to do consistently when they had to face the wind - they're making more torpedo like kicks, keeping them lower so they don't get knocked down so quickly. So they're not putting themselves at quite the disadvantage the Pies were last quarter.

Fair point. Still a decent lead, however.

GWS let the Pies stay in the match that period - one goal with the wind won't guarantee anything. Pies play like the Giants played in Q1, and they'll be desperate, then they win.

GWS just need to be defensively sound in the final quarter and they will gain their first points of the season.
