The Gold Coast Suns and Brisbane Lions meet in Round 6 AFL action. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 1:45pm (AEST).
Not for some time has the ‘QClash’ held so much interest, with northern football not having looked particularly competitive in recent times.
Brisbane began the season like the proverbial house on fire before crashing back to earth with a humbling belting at the hands of the Pies last weekend.
The Suns too, enjoyed a promising start before being similarly derailed in Round 5 when Adelaide finally found some form and their second win of the season.
Both sides now sit at three wins and two losses and on the fringe of the eight when percentages are taken into consideration.
Having both strung together three wins on the trot early in the 2019 season, there is enough evidence to suggest that Chris Fagan and Stuart Dew have their perspective teams in tip-top physical shape and playing with new found confidence.
With more matches now into some of the youth in both squads, the Suns and Lions look to be on the dawn of new areas and that is an exciting thing for all footy fans to be watching.
Despite a lack of household names in their squad, the Suns have done the Gold Coast proud so far, with Jarrod Witts, David Swallow and Alex Sexton playing the aces in the pack with some stand out performances to start the season.
The Lions have been well served by star recruit Lachie Neale and Touk Miller has finally begun to fulfill his much-touted promise.
Despite always having fire and passion, the ‘QClash’ has not had top eight ramifications… well, ever. That makes this match such a different experience for all AFL fans, with the winner moving into the eight and looking very realistic finals contenders.
Prediction
In what I am predicting may be a high scoring and somewhat chaotic game, the Luke Hodge factor may prove the difference.
The veterans’ influence on the Lions’ back half cannot be underestimated and his young defenders just keep improving under him.
That greater sense of poise and composure at the back could prove the difference in a match where young players will no doubt make many errors.
The team that stays disciplined at half-back and measures their attacking paths forward will prevail today. For me, that looks likely to be the Lions.
Brisbane by three goals.

The Brisbane Lions have defeated the Gold Coast Suns by 49 points to claim their fourth win of the season. It was far from a game to write home about, however, when the match was there to be won it was the Lions who showed their superiority on a warm afternoon at Metricon Stadium. The match started competitively with the Suns poking their nose in front early thanks to inaccurate kicking from the Lions and some excellent smothering defence. That pattern continued in the second term but the visitors managed to take a six point lead into the major break. Whatever Chris Fagan said during that time worked, as the Lions blew the game wide open in the third-quarter, kicking five goals to one and setting up a 31 point lead at three-quarter time. The onslaught continued early in the final term as the Lions added five further goals to complete what ended up being a resounding victory. Brisbane will not be happy with their execution around goal; missing many chances that could well have put them clear of the Suns far earlier in the match. As for the Suns? Well, kicking efficiency and providing better targets in the attacking 50 will be the talk on the training track this week. Frankly, they were awful today. Touk Miller tried hard in the centre and David Swallow was his usual inspirational self, yet there were few commendable performances in the Suns' team. Daniel Rich, Lachie Neale and Lincoln McCarthy had some great moments for the Lions and despite not being a polished and clinical performance, Fagan will still be pleased with the win. The Lions now face Sydney at the Gabba in Round 7 with a chance to become serious top eight contenders should they win. The Suns travel to the west to take on the champions at Optus Stadium. Unless they are able to find something more in attack and hit the scoreboard more frequently, the West Coast Eagles may be able to compile an even larger total against them than the one managed by the Lions today. Final Score Gold Coast Suns……..9..8….62 Brisbane Lions……….16..15...111
