Valentine Holmes and three other Aussies continue their NFL journeys, as the New York Jets take on the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 9am (AEST).

This match will become a unique snippet in the history of Australian sport, with four Australians involved in a pre-season NFL fixture for the first time.

Monster-sized Jordan Mailata and punter Cameron Johnston will wear the uniform of Philly, while Valentine Holmes and Lachlan Edwards will suit up for the home side.

Edwards looks assured of a spot in the final 53-man squad, while both Mailata and Johnston do not. As for Holmes, all we are saying is give Val a chance.

The former Cronulla and State of Origin star has had such limited opportunity with the Jets to this point it is hard to know whether he can actually develop into a valuable NFL player.

Last week against the Saints, Holmes saw the ball once and a decent punt return it was. However, he saw no action as a running back or wide receiver; the positions he appears to have been attempting to perfect.

This match will be quite different from the other pre-season encounters as many of the stars in both squads will be rested after blowing out the cobwebs in Week 3.

That gives players like Holmes and Maitala a chance to impress. Whether the playing time they receive is enough to sway a selection decision in their favour is another story altogether, but it will be nice to see both receive a little extra time on the field.

As for the kickers, well, get on, kick and get off. Pretty simple really. Any errors hamper their chances of securing an NFL contract in the elite squad for 2019.

Prediction
Predicting this one is a foolhardy exercise. For what it is worth, I am seeing a Jets win off the back of a solid effort against the Saints, three touchdowns to Holmes and a half-dozen successful extra-point kicks for Edwards.

It will be a day all of Australia can celebrate as our four competitors make their final statements in the NFL pre-season.

The New York Jets have beaten the Philadelphia Eagles 6-0 in a very dour affair. Thankfully, Valentine Holmes got his chance to shine tonight and but for some poor choices made by team mates may have made the impact he was looking for. It was a match without a touchdown. Just two field goals from New York proved the difference and frankly, neither side appeared likely to score for much of the contest. Both teams rested their starters and many of the men on the field were playing in the full knowledge that they will not be playing in the NFL in 2019/20. One such player was Australia's Valentine Holmes who had one last chance to impress the coaching staff in New York. Despite Australian punter and kicker Cameron Johnston seeing plenty of action, Holmes would have to bide his time on the bench before he was finally injected into the game in the 3rd quarter. He was involved immediately. The ex-Origin star carried the ball five times rushing yet unfortunately ran for a combined zero (0) yards. The offensive line were awful in protecting Holmes and he would have busted open the Eagles defence had they done their job sufficiently well. He fared better when receiving passes and took five outstanding catches all worthy of the play of the day, for a total of 55 receiving yards; more than any other Jet. However, once again he was let down by his own team mates with quarterback Davis Webb ignoring many opportunities to put the ball on the Australian's chest. On one occasion he threw a poor pass with Holmes looking likely and the Eagles intercepted the ball without any fuss and little effort. Webb should buy Holmes a beer after such a poor performance. The Jets final squad will be announced on Saturday and the reality is that Holmes has not had the chances to impress the coaching staff he would have liked. There is talk that he may be included on the practice squad, yet playing NFL football this season appears to now be a pipe dream. It was a courageous and no doubt rewarding effort for Holmes and who knows, if the coaches do realise that he was held back by some very average players around him, they may take a chance on a player without pedigree but one with plenty of heart. That is unlikely yet it has been enjoyable to see an Australian throwing his hat in the ring for potential NFL glory. Final Score New York Jets………………….6 Philadelphia Eagles……………0
