Match result:

Utah Jazz have earned the first win of the NBLxNBA 2019 tour, defeating the Adelaide 36ers by 52 points.

Despite the end result, Adelaide looked the better side for much of the first term. The 36ers kept the Jazz to their lowest score for the afternoon (28), only losing touch late to trail by 10 into the second.

Joe Ingles and Tony Bradley combined well in offense for the second, helping to build Utah to a 32 point term. The 36ers extended as well but continued losing touch as the Jazz stretched their lead to 19 points.

In the third, Utah pulled up strong from range to record a game-high 44 points. Bradley and Niang were standout as Randall and Froling did their best for the Australians.

The fourth ended much like the first. Adelaide started a lot better than the past two terms but lacked on conversion. Utah casually stretched their lead to 52 points, opening their pre-season schedule with a dominant performance.

A lot of the Utah players put their hands up for minutes in today’s performance and with five more games yet to play for the season’s open, remain a chance for those to increase in the coming games.

Final score
Adelaide 36ers 81
Utah Jazz 133

Match preview:

The NBLxNBA 2019 Tour kicks off this Sunday as the Adelaide 36ers make their return to Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City to face the Utah Jazz. Join The Roar for all the action, with live scores and a blog of the match starting at 12pm AEST.

It will be the Sixers’ second appearance in the US since the NBL began the cross-league event began back in 2017.

The last time these teams faced, the Jazz secured a convincing 129-99 win over the 36ers.

Donovan Mitchell led on the board for Utah earning 18 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Off the bench, Grayson Allen and Alec Burks managed 16 points each, while Aussie great Joe Ingles led in assists (7) with just the three points for the game.

FIBA World Cup guard Nathan Sobey made his presence known with a game-high 23 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

He was followed close by Ramone Moore and Jacob Wiley who recorded 16 and 15 points respectively to accompany five and eight rebounds.

Last year, the 36ers proved better for most of the first three terms, leading for much of the first half before losing touch slightly in the third.

In the fourth term, the Jazz burnt through the Aussie side, destroying all hope of an upset to win by 30 points.

Since the tour’s conception never has an NBL team proved the better outfit.

The New Zealand Breakers and Perth Wildcats came close against the Phoenix Suns (91-86) and Denver Nuggets (96-88) in 2018, both losing by less than 10 points.

Though it was Melbourne United’s 2017 match-up against Oklahoma City Thunder where the Australian’s came the closest, falling 86-85.

FIBA World Cup teammates, Sobey and Ingles are set to meet for the time since missing out on a bronze medal in 2019’s match against Spain.

Fellow Australian Dante Exum will also line-up for the Jazz, settling this game as a major headliner for Australian basketball fans.

NBA fans are also granted an opportunity to see Utah’s new look side ahead of the 2019-20 season with faces like Mike Conley and Bojan Bogdanovic gracing their roster in the offseason.

Two-time NBL MVP Jerome Randle will hope to make some waves in Sunday’s clash as the guard lines up alongside former Utah Jazz player Eric Griffin, who has previously spent time with Jazz Summer League side on a two way contract.

Prediction
Though the heart wants the NBL to open better in this tour, it’s hard to go against Utah Jazz in this match-up.

Jazz by 25 points.
