Match preview

The Australian Boomers will look to all but book their spot in the second round of the Basketball World Cup when they take on the weakest side in the group of death, Senegal. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5:30pm (AEST).

In short, there is a huge gulf in class between these two sides.

The Boomers aren’t expected to be challenged by Senegal, but then, weirder things have happened and Andrej Lemanis won’t want complacency to creep into his side.

That is what it seemed to do during the halftime break against Canada, when they gave up an 11-point buffer to at one point trail by six during the third term, only to pull it out of the fire and take what ended up being a comfortable win.

It was a topsy-turvy game, and with Australia making a mammoth amount of turnovers, a game which showed they still have plenty of problems to work on, especially when it comes to offensive chemistry against a high-pressure defensive line.

The Boomers still have plenty of improvement left in them, and if they want to not only beat Lithuania next time out, but advance through the second round and knockouts, they need to show it in this game against Senegal.

What will challenge Australia is the inside presence of Senegal. While they won’t have much creativity, the impact of Andrew Bogut and Aron Baynes will be diminished greatly.

Senegal’s starting group in the last game only had one guard, with the rest able to play the four or five.

They got hammered by Lithuania, but will look to slow the game down and force Australia into bad outside shots, which will either come off or not, and may look ordinary on a shot chart.

Still, they will fatigue and at times struggle to get back on defence, which will be crucial should turnovers and poor shot selection occur, which, playing a big line-up, it’s bound to do.

Prediction
This should be Australia’s easiest game of the campaign. With such a busy schedule, expect them to try and run right through their rotation and play the stars as little minutes as possible, although continuing to build team chemistry will also be crucial.

Australia by 26.

FULLTIME The Australian Boomers have all but booked their spot in the second round of the FIBA World Cup, recording a scratchy 12-point win over Senegal. It was hardly a convincing performance from the Boomers, who came into the game expecting to blow Senegal off the floor, as Lithuania did a couple of nights ago when they won by a half century of points. The Boomers played like it as well, seemingly half asleep during the first half, which they trailed at various points and ended only leading by three points. Australia were kept in the game by some good outside shooting at times, as well as the work of Joe Ingles, who finished the game with a staggering 17 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists. The Aussies also had some impressive work from Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills and Chris Goulding, but it was hardly a consistent performance across the 40 minutes, with only one stretch during the third period kicking them clear. The result means Australia go to a two and zero record, and should make the second round. Lithuania could confirm that, as well as their own advancement when they play Canada later tonight. If, however, Canada beat Lithuania, then the Boomers could still miss out on the second round if they were to fall to Lithuania when the sides meet on Thursday. Final score Australia - 81 Senegal - 69

That was a narrow escape! So many missed shots - bad shooting is bad basketball. Big improvement needed. Exciting call, thankyou Scott.

FULLTIME Mills makes both, and Senegal won't score again. That's the end of that. Australia with a win in the end, as unconvincing as it was against Senegal, and the 2 and 0 record should be enough to send them to the second round. They play Lithuania on Thursday. Australia - 81 Senegal - 68

Q4 0' Time running down now, but the Aussies have survived the match and should now go into the second round of the tournament. Mills to the free throw line, and Senegal take a time out down 11 with ten seconds to go. Australia - 79 Senegal - 68

Q4 0' Into the final minute, so this one is over now as Senegal run more clock and Dalmeida scores from the high post. Australia - 77 Senegal - 68

Q4 1' Australia now through Bogut and Ingles, who then looks to drive, but steps back out and goes again. Shot clock running down and Dellavedova has to fire. He is no good, but Kay grabs the offensive board, for Ingles then to shoot and that's good. Australia - 77 Senegal - 66

Q4 1' Australia starting to look like they are home now as we move into the final two minutes, but this has been a much tougher scrap than anyone might have imagined. Sambe now with a score from the high post. Australia - 74 Senegal - 66

Q4 2' Better ball movement now from Senegal, but it ends in a tough miss, before Creek taps it out to Mills who goes on the break and he is hit by Ndour in an unsportsmanlike foul. Mills will take two shots, then the Boomers get possession back. Australia - 71 Senegal - 64
