Gallen takes down Hannant, Hodges in EPIC fight: Full Origin Rumble card as it happened

By Mike Meehall Wood / Editor

Origin Rumble has arrived with former rugby league great Paul Gallen undertaking two fights in a single night, against Queensland pair Justin Hodges and Ben Hannant. Join The Roar for live fight updates, videos and commentary from 7pm (AEST).

Professional boxing is prizefighting, and Lord knows these boys love a prize. Gallen, the ex-footballer turned celebrity turned puncher, faces his most confusing challenge yet, taking on two FOGs in one night.

He’s talked some trash, they had a push and shove at the presser and now they go into the ring.

In between the footballer nonsense, there’ll be actual boxing too, with Lachlan Higgins, a man with the neck tattoos to match his nickname ‘Bubba’, taking on Ben Hussain, and Arsene Fosso facing off with Joseph Goodall to find out who is the better fighter to have previously lost to Justis Huni.

Hodges not happy about the stoppage and wants a rematch. George Rose wants to see it again.

Gal says he's never been properly dropped like that. Inclined to believe him.

We're all mates again, of course. Gal was pretty tough to get through his rough patch and got it back in the end.

KO Late start as Hodges' tape is off his gloves. Oldest trick in the book. These two are useless boxers but it's hard to say it isn't fun to watch, becuase they're landing left right and centre. Hodges second best in this round...and it's over! Big flurry from Gal and the ref has seen enough.

R2 Gal gets hit on the break and isn't happy. And Hodges puts him down! Gallen needs to hold but doesn't. He then catches Hodges with a cheap shot that the ref lets fly and ends with a flurry. Pretty entertaining stuff, and a 10-8 for Hodges.

R1 (of 4) Hodges swinging away and Gal is struggling. Gallen goes back to the body and gets some success, before the ref complains about him punching to the back of the head. Hodges first round win for me.

KO Fosso is taking sustained punishment and the ref says no more. The corner aren't happy but the official, correctly, tells them to get stuffed. It was coming from midway through the last round and when Fosso took a knee, that was that.

R2 Fosso manhandles Goodall to the ground, but did land something en route. Goodall lands some better shots as the round goes on, jabbing well and getting to the body. He ends strongly, Fosso wobbling a bit and eventually, Goodall falls on top of him. No knockdown though, just clumsy.

R1 A lot of holding, not much boxing. Pretty even stuff, Fosso edging it. They trade well at the end, picking the pace up a bit.

Goodall is here too, serenaded by Leeds anarchist punk band Chumbawumba. These two are big lads for sure.

Hodges is warming up. He's got a bloke in the sheds with him who is wearing a QLD jersey and what appears to be a hat stolen from Matthew Hayden. Fosso is coming to the ring.
