Predictable push and shove at Gal and Hoppa's weigh in

By The Roar / Editor

Paul Gallen and John Hopoate will go head-to-head in six, two minute rounds in Sydney on Friday night.

The two had their weigh in a day out from the fight and it was no surprise that there was a bit of niggle as Paul Gallen was the first to yield from the staredown with a hand to Hoppa’s throat.

Gallen, who still captains the Cronulla Sharks in the NRL believes he’s ‘twice as good’ as Hopoate and will start as overwhelming favourite.

Yes mate it really has. I watched that debacle, not live as I couldn't allow myself to do it, and it proved what I said earlier. One 37yo footballer "fights" a 45yo former footballer who is about as fit as me and it is the main event, bloody disgraceful. My, long time passed, uncle Billy used to train the fighters for Ernie McQuillan in the 60's and early 70's, Tony Mundine amongst them, and I know he would be disgusted with the garbage boxing is serving up today. McQuillan had a big stable of boxers, genuine boxers, all weights, who would belt Gallen and Hopoate into next week. It beats me why the boxing authorities sanction such bouts. Maybe they are desperate for attention.

Clanger...boxing has really plumbed to new depths. When green v mundie ( two blokes in their 40s) is the pinnacle of the sport in Australia, then that sport has issues

Something is wrong with this "fight". Just can't put my finger on it. Matt Lodge could take them both on. He's a proven performer against multiple opponents.

I really find it blaffering that this is occuring, Hoppa has not fought in years and has just turned 45. Just because your a security guard does not mean you know how to box. But i do look forward to the very short fight as someone will not doubt get knocked out in less than two rounds, most like Hopoate. I hope Hopoate is prepared to go home broken, bruised and empty handed

Its hard to believe that this is a mainevent at $50. Tim Tszyu is in the co-mainevent to give this some sort of relevance but seriously 50 bucks to watch a fight that wont go past the second round. Oh well we have all been suckered in before, pretty much any Green fight when he was IBO champ and Horn v Mundine for example.

Without Mundine around, Mainevent has lost thier biggest cash cow and have to fill the void some how. But I agree a 6x2 minute round pub fight that probably won’t last half that and cost 50 bucks to watch is the biggest joke of all

I cannot stand Hoppa, I think he is dreadful but I hope he knocks Gallen's block off.

These bouts are an embarrassment to a once great sport. How far has boxing declined if these two talentless pretenders are the main event. Real boxers spend years learning the craft in the amateurs, dedicating themselves to their sport, racking up hundreds of bouts before they turn pro and then have to put up with footy players who think they can fight stealing the limelight. Gallen. Hoppa and Hodges were first grade footballers who butted heads, poked rectums and threw the occasional handbag, sorry, punch. Boxers, no chance.
