It won’t be enough to take them to finals, but the Adelaide Strikers have taken a win for pride and avoided the wooden spoon with a victory over the Perth Scorchers.

The Adelaide Strikers and Perth Scorchers are playing for pride and the wooden spoon at the Adelaide Oval in this final round of the Big Bash League regular season. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2:20pm (AEDT).
It has been a season to forget for both of these sides. As defending champions, the Strikers would have hoped/expected to be in the finals again this year.
Strangely if you look at some of the stats, you’d also expect them to be there.
Fourth most runs scored of any team in the tournament and in Rashid Khan they’ve had one of the most economical bowlers who has also taken plenty of wickets – 17 so far.
But whereas in last season the Strikers side of good but not great players found a way to become more than just a sum of their parts, this season the team have struggled to put other sides under real pressure.
Yes they’ve missed Travis Head as he’s been on international duty but that’s not enough of an excuse.
In this match Head is back but sadly Colin Ingram is heading back to South Africa before the end of the season for family reasons and the home side will miss the runs he provides – 333 in the tournament.
Plenty will be needed from Alex Carey and Jake Weatherald if the Strikers want to a decent score.
For the Perth Scorchers this has been a sorry season.
They’ve been one of the most successful Big Bas sides over the years but this year has seen them struggle with bat and ball.
But in those sorry team performances, there have been some promising individual stories. Ashton Turner is sixth highest run scorer in the competition and Cameron Bancroft has been finding some form after his return from his infamous ban.
Mitchell Marsh will want to send a message to Australian selectors in this final BBL match so we should expect some fireworks from him, one way or another.
Brother Shaun however is being rested as Australia want him to be given time to recover before the upcoming tour to India.
In the bowling department there’s definitely the talent – Nathan Coulter-Nile and Andrew Tye have been taking wickets and Jason Behrendorff has been the most economical bowler in the whole competition.
If they can work well together then they could make it hard for the Strikers batting line up.
Prediction
This is more impmid-tablean some mid table match up. True, finals cricket is off the cards for both of these sides but the shame of coming dead last can provide a special type of motivation. It should be a close match but the home side are going to take it.

Both sides will be disappointed with how their seasons have gone but they'll have time over the off season to re think their rosters and get their plans together for next season. They've been quite a bit off the pace when it really matters but there are clearly talented players in both camps so plenty to be excited about for next year.

So the Adelaide Strikers have beaten the Perth Scorchers by 5 wickets meaning that the Scorchers will have the "pleasure" of holding onto the wooden spoon for the off season! It was an exciting game and although the Scorchers had a god few innings from their batsmen, they needed another 15 runs at least. The Strikers have played well and they will be happy to get the win and frustrated that they weren't able to have a proper go at retaining their title. There's more BBL straight away with the Sydney Thunder taking on the Hobart Hurricanes and the Finals will soon be upon us!
