Australia will take on India in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Boxing Day Test will begin at 10:30am (AEDT), and you can follow it with live scores and a blog from The Roar below.

Going into the third Test with the series level and one more game to follow makes the match-up even more interesting.

Last time India were in Australia, the hosts had already gone 2-0 up and, despite strong batting performances from both sides, looked a far more potent bowling side.

In fact, since 2011, there’s been only one other team to have gone into the third Test with at least parity in the proceedings in a series played in Australia.

The issue, for the visitors, however, is that Australia have smelled blood, having won their first ever Test match since the ball-tampering saga back in March this year and they wouldn’t want to take their foot off the throat.

A lot could depend on the toss though.

Batting first has proven to be an advantage in the series, as has also been the case over the past five years – with Australia having lost just one of the 17 Tests in which they have batted first.

Going into this one, there has been a lot of speculation about the pitch, as is the norm before most games.

However, this is more so in Melbourne given what transpired last time a Test was played here.

Just 24 wickets fell over five days of the Test, and the surface was termed as ‘poor’ by the ICC leaving the ‘G with the task of upping the ante – lest they get banned.

What will not be speculated is the playing XIs of the two sides because both teams have been announced.

Australia have made just one change, bringing in Mitchell Marsh for Peter Handscomb – this is also their first change for the series.

The decision might have been arrived at looking at the nature of the pitch and the need for an extra bowler.

Handscomb’s technique also looked all over the place and he was struggling to score runs.

India’s playing XI looks distinctly different.

Gone are their openers, whose combined total of 97 runs in the series gave them one of the worst averages for India in a long, long time.

In their place, Mayank Agarwal will debut and, in all probability, Hanuma Vihari will be shunted up the order.

Rohit Sharma has returned to the XI.

Also sent out is Umesh Yadav, and he will be replaced by Ravindra Jadeja, thereby lending some more batting to the tail which began at eight in the previous game, and mostly ended there too.

Prediction
The team that wins the toss to bat first and pile on a big score by the end of the day’s play.

where are all the aussie fans, felt like the test match was in India or neutral venue.. Why aren't aussies turning up, in the old days at test matches vs India or any asian teams there was a patriotic feel that it was local dominant crowd now it feels like Indians care more about cricket than the average aussie and the crowd felt natural half half or more indian feel, when in Melbourne.. Same issues when you go to a rugby test now in Australia vs New Zealand it feels like a natural venue or more kiwis there... But when you go to a rugby test in NZ or a cricket test in India, very few aussies there just a few as opposed to like half the ground or more than half the ground.. Where are all the aussie fans today i ask...

Never saw R Marsh drop one of them. Like Paine though.

Jayzus that is a dull days cricket. Unless someone gets to it with a watering can this pitch will fully deserve a "poor" rating and the G will lose next years Boxing Day test.

Seriously disappointed with MCG after those 2 tests. Wasn't looking forward to this. For the match, it's in balance IMO. 1 wicket could have tilted the moment to Aussies if Paine would not have dropped that. This is a 350 pitch. Considering from late 3rd day spin will come into play, Aussies should take at least 150 lead after bowling ind out within 350-370

It would have been epic if Starc bowled like that at the start of the day. As it was Cummins looked to be really putting in all the time and the others mostly in conservation mode. Marsh bowled ok, certainly as well as I've seen him bowl when everyone else was looking innocuous. Hard to tell where we're headed until after tomorrow.

Mayank Agarwal batted rather well on debut after Hanuma Vihari hadn't scored too much but done his bit in taking the shine off the new ball. Cummins got Vihari out off a snorter and Mayank fell to a strangler down the leg-side off the final ball of the second session. Kohli joined Pujara and batted in a way that's not been his second nature, but together they have added 92 runs in a session. India will be aiming to get to 400 tomorrow but again, enough in the pitch to prove a threat, especially if the pitch gets further hardened by the sun. Be back tomorrow for the second day's play. Have a good Boxing Day :)

India haven't lost a wicket in the session, and end the day at 2/215. By my estimate, this hasn't been the flattest pitch on offer - it's been difficult for both batsmen and bowlers, difficult to score runs, difficult to pick up wickets. That said, there have been cases of unevenness too, balls taking off from length, or zootering down from that very area and if those progressively get worse, India would count themselves to be in a very good position.

That starc over tells us he doesnt go full throttle early in the day, now he gives his everything and things are happening. i don’t think it is wise of him to conserve energy, he is the gun bowler who should look to bowl little spells with full efforts just like Pakistan used to use shoaib akhter

Pujara looks good for four balls in the Hazlewood over, even on-driving one a couple of runs but then off the fifth, there's one that leaps off a length and Pujara takes his eye off and wants to evade it. Gets hit on his gloves but it doesn't go on the full to the fielder. Hazlewood has a word with Pujara and follow it up with a good ball, floats it wide outside the off. The Monk at the other end lets it go.

It looks impressive and its fast but Starc is just not putting the ball in the right places to actually get and lbw or bowl him. Calm down a little mate.

All of a sudden Starc's getting things going. What an over. A dropped catch, a ball that takes off from good length and jumps over the keeper for four byes, a ball that swings down the leg-side and then a yorker that almost sneaks through. Kohli drives the final ball to mid-on but that over should enthuse a few. 2/213 in 87

That would happen wouldn't it. Nothing's happened for quite a few hours and when a chance is presented we drop it.

Whoa, nicked and put down! Kohli has gone after a wide one, edged it and gets dropped by Paine... ...big, big letoff there for Kohli.
