With only one point separating the Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers, this afternoon’s clash at the Gabba could prove vital in securing a home final for either side. Join The Roar for live coverage, with live scores and a blog of the match from 3:40pm (AEDT).
The Strikers climbed back up to third place after a dominating win – their first in 2020 – over the Renegades on Sunday.
Though they welcomed back Travis Head after his strong summer with the Australian Test squad, it was the ever-reliable Jon Wells who led the way for Adelaide with 58 runs off 38 deliveries.
Brisbane, on the other hand – who are usually associated with power hitting and exceptional totals – received a taste of their own medicine on Saturday night when they played spectator to the Scorchers’ blistering 3-213 total.
But today the Heat welcome into the side the most talked about signing of BBL|09, with South African AB de Villiers finally making his Big Bash debut.
De Villiers will be replacing the Heat’s leading run-scorer, Tom Banton, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman also replaces Zahir Khan. Meanwhile, the Strikers’ squad remain unchanged.
These sides last met towards the end of last season at the Adelaide Oval, with the Heat recording a strong six-wicket win chasing 176.
Matt Renshaw scored his career-high of 90* off 50 deliveries in that match, as well as taking the crucial wicket of Jake Weatherald.
Prediction
The Strikers, despite their recent win, don’t look like the side they were at the start of the season, while the Heat will be ready to make a statement with their two new imports.
AB de Villiers’ arrival should motivate Brisbane to perform at their best, and while they’re known to be inconsistent, when they’re on, they’re simply unstoppable.
Expect the Heat to record their fifth win of the season and, more importantly, jump back into the top five on the ladder.

James Pattinson earned best on ground honours with a stunning bowling display, with the fast bowler taking 5-33 and – just like in red-ball cricket – doing his damage at the top of the order, prohibiting the Strikers from setting a respectable score. The Strikers will be desperate for revenge on Friday afternoon when these two sides face off again at the Adelaide Oval. With Adelaide having now lost four of their past five matches and look nothing like the side they were two weeks ago. Thanks for joining The Roar this afternoon for live score updates and debate on the BBL.

HEAT WIN! The Brisbane Heat record their fifth win of the season and jump from sixth to fourth on the BBL Ladder with a seven wicket win over the Adelaide Strikers. Their thumping win sees their net run rate rocket from -0.076 to +0.19 and, with finals just around the corner, they’ll be hoping to continue building that. While all eyes were on AB de Villiers who starred with an eye-catching 40 off 32 deliveries, Matt Renshaw also played an important part in the Heat’s small chase, remaining unbeaten on 52* off 45.

HEA 3-114 (15.2) | FOUR! Conway to Renshaw (52*). An edge glides over Harry Nielsen's head and caps off a tremendous seven wicket win for the Brisbane Heat.

HEA 3-104 (14.0) | O'Connor to bowl his third over with the Heat needing just seven runs. This could be the last over of the day.

3-102 (13.5) | Neser to Burns (5*). Burns brings up the 100 for Brisbane as another overthrow allows an extra run.

HEA 3-97 (13.0) | O'Connor to Burns (2*). Nine from O'Connor's over and though the Heat only need 14 from 42 balls, Liam O'Connor now gets to say he dismissed AB de Villiers.

HEA 3-93 (12.3) | FOUR! O'Connor to Renshaw (40*). A cute sweep from Renshaw is too fine for Wes Agar at fine leg and it races to the boundary.

HEA 3-88 (12.1) | WICKET! O'Connor to de Villiers (40). O'Connor comes back into the attack and gets the big wicket of AB de Villiers (40 off 32)! A poor delivery from O'Connor but it worked, as AB found the man at mid-on for an elementary catch. Joe Burns comes in for the Heat.

HEA 2-88 (12.0) | Conway to Renshaw (36*). Four runs from Conway's over, but the Heat aren't under any pressure at all with AB 40 off 31 and Renshaw 36 off 36. Liam O'Connor to bowl his second over.

HEA 2-84 (11.0) | TIME OUT. Rashid to Renshaw (35*). Rashid Khan finishes his four overs with figures of 1-30 as the Heat take their time out. Brisbane require just 27 from 54 deliveries and with net run rate always such an important factor come the end of the season, they might come out swinging for the final nine overs.

HEA 2-80 (10.3) | Rashid to de Villiers (37*). Time out to be taken at the end of Rashid's final over.

HEA 2-76 (10.0) | Siddle to de Villiers (34*). Six from Siddle’s second over as the Heat reach the halfway mark of their innings, well ahead of the Strikers.

HEA 2-76 (9.4) | FREE HIT. Siddle to Renshaw (30*). A well bowled full delivery by Siddle but Renshaw steals two runs on the leg side.

HEA 2-70 (9.0) | Neser to de Villiers (33*). Three runs from Neser's third over, though the Strikers need wickets quickly if they're any chance of winning this one.
