2019 will get off to a bang with the opening game of the year seeing the Sydney Sixers and Brisbane Heat keen to get their season properly up and running after average starts to BBL|08. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 3pm (AEDT).
Neither side has hit their stride yet, but what better time to start than New Year’s Day?
For the Sixers, the opening win against the Scorchers was sadly followed up by two losses, but their win against the Renegades a couple of days ago demonstrated that their bowling line up has some real bite to it.
Steve O’Keefe has been especially impressive both in terms of economy and wicket-taking, but he needs to be backed up. Tom Curran has certainly done well at the death but it’s in the batting department that most improvement is needed. There have been a couple of good innings from Jordan Silk but the top order as a whole needs to fire.
Although the Heat might be propping up the bottom of the table, it’s important to note that they have only played 2 games so far. Yes they have lost those two games but a win against the Sixers will have them just 2 points behind second place.
If the Heat are going to start to live up to the expectations that many had for them ahead of the competition then their batting order is going to need to deliver. It’s full of smash and bash talent and if the likes of Chris Lynn and Brendon McCullum can get going then the Sixers could be in real trouble.
Prediction
The time has come for the Heat to get their season back on track and the Sixers are going to be the ones on the receiving end. Much has been expected from the Queensland batting line up and with the return of bowling talent in James Pattinson the Heat do really look good on paper. For their fans’ sake let’s hope that they turn theory into practice.
Brisbane Heat to get their first win of the competition.

What a cracking match to start 2019!! Chris Lynn and the Heat would have thought they had that won after setting the unimpressive Sixer batting line up a decent score of 165 to chase down. But the Sixers were led well by their skipper Henriques and in the end they won with 3 balls to spare and 5 wickets in hand. It looked like the Sixers had started off too slowly but they stuck at it and put together some good partnerships. That was an important game for both sides - the Sixers pick up their third win of the comp and the Heat are still winless after 3 matches. Things are going to be hard for the Heat now - they will need one hell of a run to make the finals. The Sixers have won two in a row now and will know this could be the beginning of something special. Their batting really impressed today and some of the young guns like Philippe did very well in a pressure situation. Loads of good big bash cricket to come with the Melbourne derby up soon - make sure to join The Roar for that one! Happy New Year everyone and see you again soon!
