England welcome Afghanistan to Old Trafford today, looking to build on what has been a solid 2019 World Cup so far. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:30pm (AEST).

The English have won three games from four to begin this World Cup, which is not a bad platform to build from.

In the previous clash they participated in, they defeated the West Indies by eight wickets at The Rose Bowl.

The West Indies batted first, and were bowled out for 212. Jofra Archer and Mark Wood both took three wickets each, and were ultimately the key reason why the English had such a little total to chase.

England’s batting order was shuffled, as Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan both suffered injuries within the game.

What was impressive was just how versatile England were despite being faced with adversity. Joe Root opened and compiled an unbeaten 100 runs from 94 deliveries.

It was his second century of the tournament, which highlights the type of form he is currently in.

That innings itself ultimately won England the game and put them in a good position heading into the clash against Afghanistan.

It is yet to be confirmed if Roy and Morgan will miss the clash, however that could have changed by the time you are reading this.

As for Afghanistan, they are yet to win a game in this particular World Cup. They were humiliated in their previous clash, as they were bowled out for 125 against South Africa in Cardiff.

Rashid Khan was the shining light with the bat, as he finished with 35 runs from 25 balls. South Africa chased the total only losing the one wicket, which resulted in Afghanistan losing the game by nine wickets.

No one expected much from Afghanistan in this tournament, however, they will be disappointed with how it has gone.

Prediction
England will win this comfortably. So far, they have shown the cricketing world why they are one of the tournament favourites, and that will continue against Afghanistan.

England to prevail.

don't worry, I get it, they are looking scary good. a positive mindset that creates an expectation of 350+, self fulfilling because everyone is on the same page root couldn't be in better form if he tried. Wood and Archer available to supplement Anderson (and Woakes?) Buttler is amazing. he is Thunder. stands to reason! in terms of Moeen that ball striking was ridiculous. long, effortless swing. like Mitch j when he was on. maybe I would like to see carey at 7 ASAP and playing in the Hussey/Gilchristian counter attacking way I think he can. the Paine/Cummins super stable 7/8 rebuilding thing - might be otioise now Smith and Warner are back. that Head and Patterson found form. time to start winning tests rather than save them?

Root has 4 50 plus scores from 5 innings and only against south africa was his strike rate less than 100, 88 or so. Obviously he is able to due to the team he is in but its nice that he doesnt seem to care about scoring at massively more than a run a ball, prefering to be the consistent batsmen, he must be tempted sometimes to try and smack the ball all around the grounds but its nice that he doesnt and just 'plods' along at 100 strike rate or so this tournament.

England have defeated Afghanistan by 150 runs at Old Trafford to continue their solid form in the 2019 World Cup. England won the toss and elected to bat first, and it certainly proved to be the correct decision. Jonny Bairstow got the hosts off to a decent start, as the opener compiled 90 runs from 99 deliveries. Joe Root continued his solid form, as he was the anchor in the English innings. He finished with 88 runs from 82 balls. However, it was Eoin Morgan who was the star. The England captain smashed 148 runs from 71 deliveries, which included a total of 17 sixes. England finished 6/397, and it was always going to be too many to chase for Afghanistan. However, Afghanistan decided to show some fight and bat the 50 overs. Hashmatullah Shahidi led the way and compiled 76 runs from 100 balls, which will give him a lot of confidence going forward. Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer both took three wickets each for England. Mark Wood was also solid, as he finished with two wickets. England – 6/397 (50 overs) Afghanistan – 8/247 (50 overs)
