We are just days from the start of the Cricket World Cup, and the first official warm-up matches are here, as England take on Australia at the Rose Bowl. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).

While the result of warm-up games matters little, the form of individual players jockeying for spots in the final XI certainly does, and neither of these teams are what would be considered settled.

For Australian fans, it will be the first chance to see David Warner and Steve Smith operating around the playing group since their return, and undoubtedly, both have plenty to prove.

While they have been involved in some unofficial games and the Indian Premier League, their form will come under the real microscope here as they attempt to re-integrate into the Australian set-up.

Smith was huge on Wednesday in an unofficial warm-up game as Australia beat the West Indies, while Warner was among the best in the IPL.

The real question hovering over the Australians which they will hope to answer in these warm-up games is which opening combination – out of captain Aaron Finch, Warner, and Usman Khawaja – they will go with long-term.

The rest of the side seems reasonably settled, and for the bowlers, with Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins leading the way, it’ll be a chance to build form and match fitness in English conditions on grounds where defending runs is difficult.

On the English side of the dice, they come into a home World Cup under immense pressure. They are one of the favourites for the tournament, and having never lifted the biggest prize in cricket, they will be up against it from the home fans and media.

Eoin Morgan’s side are known for their big hitting, and it’s there they need to make plenty during the tournament on grounds which favour them.

Outside of Morgan, they are likely to be able to blast away from the get-go, with Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow at the top of the order, and Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali further down, all supported by Joe Root, who should provide the glue.

England have a fairly complete team, and even in a warm-up game where the result doesn’t matter, that should be on display.

Prediction
Again, the result doesn’t matter all that much, but it’d still be a nice confidence-booster for the team who comes out on front. Hard to see England dropping this one though.

Interesting game, get the feeling both sides will operate differently when it comes to competitive games with full strength line ups. Shame we didn't get to see Wood bowl more as he looked dangerous. Smith looked imperious as ever. Beyond Warner and Smith I think Aus look to have weaknesses in their batting in terms of power hitting but on the other hand the bowling can take a few positives. Buttler looked monstrous like he was playing on a completely different pitch to the rest. Vince looks like a good fall back and Woakes batting down the order shows Eng strength in depth. Augers well for an exciting tournament!

Meanwhile, NZ thumped India in the other practice match. Boult far too good for the flat track bollys.

END OF MATCH A pretty good hit out for both England and Australia at the start of what is going to be a long summer between the two sides. Australia looked to be a little short on runs, with only Steve Smith's century and Alex Carey's cameo getting them to just shy of 300, but it ended up being enough. James Vince held the English innings together, while Jos Buttler's innings - including 24 off one Kane Richardson over - was something to behold, however, they struggled to hang in at the end, while Australia's bowlers will take plenty from the last 10 or 15 overs. Australia: 9/297 (50) England: 10/285 (49.3)

Have to say that I was impressed with Stoinis’ and Lyons’s bowling. Stoinis, Marsh and Uzzie need to cut out hose dots when batting though. Carey really impressed but I still think Handscomb should be in this squad.

missing 3 of our big guns and making a lot of mistakes yet nabbing the win anyway what a great confidence boost!

AUSTRALIA WIN Halfway down from Stoinis, and that will be the end of the game. Archer plugged it between three fielders, tried to come back for two and was run out. Over: 49.3 England: 10/285 Required score: 298

Stoinis at Rashid then. Slower ball, back of a length. Rashid gets an inside edge, it misses the stumps, then Carey misses the stumps as well. Over: 49.2 England: 8/284 Required score: 298

WICKET! Liam Plunkett, Caught Glenn Maxwell, Bowled Marcus Stoinis 19 (20) Plunkett comes down the track here and looked to have hit it absolutely brilliantly, but it's the long boundary and will pick out Glenn Maxwell who completes a great catch on the fence. Over: 49.1 England: 8/283 Required score: 298

Had to get a boundary there, but it'll just be two as Rashid cuts to Smith, who makes a fumble on it. 15 needed from the final over. Over: 49 England: 8/283 Required score: 298

Rashid walked across the crease there and shaped to go hard, then tried to dab at it, but ended up missing everything. Another slower ball to finish and Rashid misses. Over: 48.4 England: 8/279 Required score: 298

Richardson to bowl the final over from this end then. He starts halfway down, pace off, and Rashid grabs one over point. Over: 48.1 England: 8/278 Required score: 298
