The Hobart Hurricanes will look to get back to their best and wrap up the BBL|08 minor premiership when they host the Melbourne Renegades, who are still in the hunt for a home final. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEDT).

The Hurricanes, who have two games left in their season, have been the top team by a considerable distance this year and already have a home final locked in.

With a win here, they would go to 10 from 13, 20 competition points and an unassailable advantage at the top of the ladder ahead of the finals.

The Hurricanes have had it all this year, and someone has stood up in nearly every game to ensure they got over the line, although a red-hot Alex Carey and Jake Weatherald took the stuffing out of their bowling attack last time around.

Still, the Renegades don’t quite have the weapons of the Hurricanes, and the likes of Aaron Finch and Marcus Harris will be hard-pressed to see off James Faulkner and Riley Meredith without the new ball duo doing some serious damage.

Of course, while the Hurricanes can wrap up top spot, this game is crucial for the Renegades in that, if they win, it’ll put the pressure on the Sydney Sixers to both win, and keep a higher net run rate to get a home final.

If the Renegades lose, they are destined to a road trip in the semi-finals.

The key for the Renegades is to not lose early wickets with the bat. If Faulkner, Meredith or even Clive Rose can breakthrough, their batting is inconsistent and could fall apart, as it’s done more than once this season.

The ‘Canes, on the other hand, have batted all the way down with relative consistency, and if D’Arcy Short and Matt Wade can get off to a good start, they will be tough to reel in.

Prediction
The Hurricanes might have lost last time out against a determined Strikers, but they haven’t lost in Hobart this year, nor have they lost two on the trot. Hobart will win and wrap up top spot here.

Hurricanes pretty easily.

HOBART HURRICANES DEFEAT MELBOURNE RENEGADES BY 16 RUNS The Hobart Hurricanes have wrapped up a home semi-final and the BBL|08 minor premiership with a solid, yet nervy 16-run victory over the Melbourne Renegades, who will now face an away semi-final. The Hurricanes, being sent in to bat first, put a huge start on the board. They didn't lose a wicket during the powerplay as a frustrated-looking Matthew Wade teed off after his ommission from the Australian ODI and T20 squad to travel to India later this month. Wade ended up with 58 at almost two runs per ball, but when he and D'Arcy Short got out in the same over, followed by a mini-collapse in the middle over, sparked by the bowling of Mohammad Nabi, the Hurricanes were in a spot of bother and struggling to maintain their frantic pace. Good performances at the back end from Ben McDermott and Simon Mikenko got them to 183 though. The Renegades chase got underway with all sorts going on as Riley Meredith went for 23 off the opening over, mainly through sunderies as he came up with a sequence of wides and no balls. Following that though, Aaron Finch and Sam Harper got the Renegades well in front, sitting on 70 at the end of the powerplay. Wickets fell shortly afterwards though, and the Renegades quickly fell behind, struggling against the spin of debutant Qais Shah and D'Arcy Short, falling well behind and never being able to catch up. The Renegades fate will be decided by the final games of the season. It would take some big wins, but if the Melbourne Stars are able to blast past both the Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers in their last two games, there is a chance they could yet face a trip back to Hobart for the semi-finals. Otherwise, they are likely to head north and play the Sixers. Tonight though, it was Wade and Short setting up the win for Hobart. Hobart Hurricanes: 6/183 (20) Melbourne Renegades: 8/167 (20)
