The Hobart Hurricanes will be out to prove exactly why they are BBL|08 minor premiers when they take on an out of form Melbourne Stars in the first semi-final. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEDT).

The Hobart-based franchise are back in the finals after falling agonisingly short in the decider last year against the Adelaide Strikers.

They have had a splendid season, and that’s mainly been sparked at the top of the order.

While a lot of teams have struggled to ram home the advantage of a powerplay on a consistent basis, D’Arcy Short (602 runs) and Matthew Wade (590 runs) have scored more than anyone else and got the Hurricanes off to a strong start at nearly every opportunity.

Once they get going, it’s made life very easy for their middle order, and they will be hoping for more of the same against a vulnerable Stars attack.

While the Hurricanes middle order does have deficiencies, the experience provided by players like George Bailey, Ben McDermott and James Faulkner will ensure they still get a good score if the top order does fail.

If the Stars don’t bowl well, they are going to struggle big time to get anywhere near the home team.

While the return of Nepalian Sandeep Lamichhane adds plenty, Jackson Coleman, Daniel Worrall and Scott Boland (pending on which attack they go with) have struggled at times to shut down opposition top orders, and nowhere was that more prevalent than when these sides last met as the Hurricanes ran up 185 on the back of a 95-run opening stand.

The Stard did bowl well in their final regular season game though, restricting the Sixers to under 100, but it’s been rocks and diamonds, with the side only winning one of their last three – a win they had to have to make the semi-finals.

Even if they do manage to restrict the Hurricanes, their batting has been heavily reliant on Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis.

However, if the duo get going, as they have done at various times throughout the year, then the pressure will go on a mostly inexperienced bowling attack of Hobart, which was plain to see when Riley Meredith bowled the opening over for 23 against the Renegades in their final regular season game.

Just one over like that could flip the script, but heading in, it’s a script which is all purple.

Prediction
The ‘Canes are in a rich vein of form. They are at home, and with Wade and Short looking unstoppable at the top of the order, they should prove too strong for the Stars.

Hurricanes to win.

.Already happened- Mitch Marsh is our test and ODI vice captain, probably because he's good with the group.

As Ricky and Tim Pane also observed in the commentary Archer had the wrong tactics early on - he should have been bowling fast and sharp like Meredith to make use of the new ball - but instead he was bowling liquorice all sorts which may have been better served at the end of the innings. And agree that bowling Short instead of Rose was a real oversight by George Bailey.

Maxwell has certainly stepped up as a finisher in the last 2 games carrying the Stars to victory. Definitely think the more responsiblity Maxwell is given the better he preforms. The fact senior players like Hussey, KP, C. White and Faulkner are not there has lead to Maxwell rising to the occasion and taking ownership of the result. Leadership agrees with Maxwell IMO.

Maxi's won the last two matches for the Stars. Hurricanes had got back the momentum when he came to the crease.

Ha ha.. are you kidding mate ? Langer will drag Bancroft in and make him Captain than give it to Maxi. Shame but thats how it goes. I honestly think if Dizzy was made coach, we would have been in a better place and Maxi would have been treated better!

Justin Langer probably wouldn't like it but Maxwell is a very good captain. If Finch keeps up his lousy ODI form- he would an inspired choice as 50 and 20 over captain.

Yeah, not wrong, but they were always on the back foot. 2/5 isn't a good position to be in.

MELBOURNE STARS DEFEAT HOBART HURRICANES BY 6 WICKETS WITH 7 BALLS TO SPARE

The Melbourne Stars are the first team into the final of BBL|08, crushing minor premiers the Hobart Hurricanes at Blundstone Arena by six wickets.

They faced their fair share of pressure, but right from the word go, it looked like it was going to be a good night for the men in green.

Winning the toss and electing to bowl, they had the Hurricanes at 2 for 5 off just 2 overs as Daniel Worrall made a brilliant start with the ball. Having Matthew Wade back in the shed early on was a major win for the Stars, and the ‘Canes were behind the eight ball from the get-go.

D’Arcy Short tried to get things back on track for the Hurricanes during the remainder of the powerplay, but he perished as well with three balls of the first six remaining, and from there, it was a recovery effort.

While George Bailey and Ben McDermott, who got a half-century, did a good job, they didn’t have enough on the board in the end without doing everything perfectly in the field, which they didn’t.

Captain Glenn Maxwell still had to play a great knock alongside Seb Gotch to get them over the line after some good early bowling from Jofra Archer and Riley Meredith, but the knocks from the duo, as well as the settling one from Peter Handscomb early on around a few early wickets, got them over the line.

The Stars now move into the final, playing away from home against either the Melbourne Renegades or Sydney Sixers, who play the second semi-final at Marvel Stadium tomorrow, in the final on Sunday.

Hobart Hurricanes: 7/153 (20)
Melbourne Stars: 4/156 (18.5)

Hurricanes shot themselves in the foot. Why bowl Short over Rose? Get your rotations right and Archer is your death bowler. Unfortunately for Faulkner his variations have been too obvious for too long.

SIX! STARS WIN! The Stars weren't going to muck around there. Faulkner goes full with a bit of width and Gotch dispatches the cover drive onto the hill. Bit of pressure at times there, but the Stars are through to the BBL final. Over: 18.5 Melbourne Stars: 4/157 Target: 154

FOUR This is all but over now. That's the shot that wraps it up, with Faulkner throwing in a bouncer which is cut over point with a tennis-type shot. Four. Over: 18.4 Melbourne Stars: 4/151 Target: 154

Faulkner with a bit of width this time. Gotch cuts and finds a pretty good gap, racing back for three, with Maxwell just surviving a run out opportunity. Over: 18.2 Melbourne Stars: 4/146 Target: 154
