Group A of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 gets underway as Ireland take on Netherlands in a crucial opening game for both sides. Ireland have been struggling with their form and will know that a loss to the Dutch will make qualification to the Super 12 very difficult. Join The Roar for live scores from 9:00pm (AEDT).

Many of the heroes of Irish cricket have retired and the current squad is in a phase that it would be polite to call one of rebuilding. The reality is that they have really struggled to get the remaining old guard to blend successfully with the up and coming generation winning just 21 T20 internationals from their past 59 and only one of those victories was against a top eight nation.

There is real concern that the Ireland side is lacking in pretty much all key aspects including little power-hitting, poor ability against spin and no real penetration when it comes to their bowling attack.

The top-order batting lineup of Paul Stirling, Kevin O’Brien and captain Andrew Balbirnie are going to have to do the bulk of the scoring and if they don’t fire, Ireland are in real trouble.

The Netherlands have been involved in some of the biggest upsets of T20 World Cup history beating England twice in 2009 and 2014. With the decent squad that they’ve got going into this World Cup, they won’t be satisfied with one big win – they want to put together a successful campaign.

Captain Pieter Seelaar will of course be crucial as he looks to tie down the opposition on the slow pitches of the UAE and Oman with his slow left armers. But he can’t do it all on his own so keep an eye out for 27-year-old Max O’Dowd. Born in New Zealand he’s able to play for the Netherlands through his mother’s heritage and has become one of their most effective batsmen. He has a decent strike rate of 125.21 and will want to add to the 1038 international runs he’s already scored in T20.

Will be determined by finishing positions in Qualifying, but a Super Six grouping made up of England, Scotland and Ireland would be good viewing.

I love it how O’Dowd is playing for the Netherlands rather than Ireland.

Oh wow. I'm assuming that was still a valid runout because the other bail was still in place?

What an appalling run out by the Dutch. Couldn't hear if the striker called it through, but it should never have been a run. Paul Stirling is certainly a chunky lad. N
